Microsoft reveals new life-to-date sales for aging console; Xbox Live membership up 15 percent in latest quarter.
Microsoft has now sold 70 million Xbox 360s across the world since the console launched in November 2005. The news comes by way of Microsoft's first quarter 2013 (July 2012-September 2012) financial report, which saw its Xbox division post total revenue of $1.95 billion, down just 1 percent from the prior year.
Microsoft sold 1.7 million Xbox 360s across the world during the period, down 600,000 units--or 29 percent--from this time last year.
Microsoft chief financial officer Peter Klein said the console market "continues to be challenged," and is thus forecasting a decline in revenue for the company's Entertainment and Devices division for the upcoming quarter. Single-digit growth, however, is expected for the full fiscal year.
A bright spot on Microsoft's sheet was Xbox Live. The company said Xbox Live membership was up 15 percent during the quarter, though a new user milestone figure was not announced. The latest Xbox Live user tally from April this year stood at 40 million. Microsoft said it continues to see the online platform as a "strength."

I remember when Microsoft was sued, lost the trial, and had to extend the warranty from 1 year to 3 years. I'd have to agree half their sales are re-purchases, since I don't know a single person in my life that is still on their first 360. Not here to argue, just here to say sales figures mean nothing at this point in time, if none of the consoles had failed.. then they would still meaning something.
Although I'm glad to see the 360 is still successful, I'm ready for their next console. Hopefully it's b/c.

So let me get this right.... xbox is out selling the PS3 console, exclusives on xbox are out selling ps3 exclusives, and games that are on both consoles are selling better by up to 50% on Xbox..... sounds to me like the xbox is winning this on all fronts:)

1 Like Pretty impressive. Especially considering the lack of sales in japan. I'm suprised the newer contender managed to dominate the core market in NA. Although that's likely due to it's innovation in online and social gaming.
Makes me intrigued as to how next gen will work out.

@CivilizedPsycho They've always had issues selling strongly over there. Even without Japan, Microsoft is doing great with the success of the 360. Maybe they'll finally figure out Japan with their next console. Doubtful, but they gotta try.

Seems like neck and neck competition between ps3 and xbox360. With PS3 launching 1 year later than xbox360 and behind almost a million, I think PS3 may win.
@Oldgun you seem to forget the playstation as a console is 5 years or so older and is in its 3rd generation while the xbox is in its second generation so its embarassing for the ps3 to steel have not caught up with the 360 given the head start the ps brand had

@steelmouth @deadmonkey76 @Oldgun i only bought a console because i spose growing up with consoles only and not really pc's ( daddy didn't believe they were the future as many didn't then as until jobs and gates changed all that) so we didnt get one until 486. Again they didnt really interest me i liked arcade style games then, i think now im, dare i say it a "more intelligent" so my gaming needs have changed. plus they just way in front, and now on some games i can use a pad, i potentially get the best of both.

least ms replaced their faulty 360s. for free i might add. for 3 years! my 60 gig ps3 is in my basement if you want that. sony wanted 150 plus shipping both ways to fix it. another thing i give ms credit for is. each time they released a new 360 sku. they did it to improve the 360 and make it safer and better.. when sony made new ones they did it to save money and strip features out of it. and to help stop pirates from burning games or blu ray movies. mean while they let all our credit card info easy to get hacked. i loved sony. they helped me get back into gaming with ps1.. but this gen i am at the point where i will not buy the ps4 till its under 250

1 Like It's more like 50 Million. MS counted the Millions apon Millions of Xbox 360's in the 1st 3 years that they sent to people around the world due to RROD and E74. as a Sale. If you ask me they can't do that.

Because MS fixed those systems for free... UNLIKE SONY charging people $175 because they made a cheap console. Those were repairs, they wouldn't be considered sales. Secondly, apparently the 360 is that great of a console. People would buy it 2,3, or 4 times. Sit on that one fangirls. You want to make it a negative, but in reality it says a lot of people are willing to buy more then 2.

Yes Microsoft repaired the hardware for free, i think its a matter of how many went "bang" and the fact people don't trust them now. All hardware will fail eventually due to the nature of it (electrons and heat).

were not haters id love another 360 i miss halo big time, but after buying several 360s and sending them away only to have the second one you bought in between go "pop" too. I have a wide knowledge of gaming and have or have every system with large amounts of games, ive played millions from the 70's, im not bigging me up just trying to emphasize the point, the 360 was so poor yet so good. @Inferi-Fang haha i did leave !!! i did the same research and believe me i don't think just keeping it well ventilated was the issue, they're consoles designed to be used anywhere. I'm sure it wasn't in a confined space. i had many and they all went within a year of having each!! No one told me to keep my mega-drive well ventilated haha!!! though i see your point with more power comes higher cooling needs !! and yeah your right i had some blinding games but sadly didn't get to experience any newer ones, gears 2 was the last game i played b4 big red came along and ruined it all.

I did some research online, found out ms could replace it for free. I still got my replaced 360 and it works like a charm. My first 360 rrod on me because I didn't keep it well ventilated(not to mention my room heats up pretty fast). When I got my new one, I took better care of it. I know the 360 has its problems, but I wish people would acknowledge that it's still a great console with a really good library of games.
1 Like @CeZar_87 Please it is possible for it to RRod after warranty. Especially when it was originally 90 days, than a year, then 3 years. As you can see they changed it a few times throughout its lifetime and some people decided to buy a new 360 instead of getting it repaired out of warranty (which MS would eventually reimburse with their new warranty). Also at the time it didn't cover the E74 error so they were out of luck for a time as well so they payed to repair or bought new console.
Also I can't believe you took a shot at the PS3 being cheaply made especially considering It didn't have 2 different ways to fail, RROD and E74, that contributed to something like a 30-40% fail rate...
I need someone elses opinion here, i have the 360 pro, and it's getting old, the disc tray doesn't work anymore and i have literally no memory left on it either. So i was thinking about getting the 360 slim to replace it, but then i heard rumors of the 720 coming out in the near future. So should i stake it out with the one i have now, or go out and buy the slim?

@246824682468 Microsoft hasn't confirmed that there is a 720 in development. This is likely because they want to keep selling 360s.
Honestly it just matters how screwed up your disc tray is and how much you play. If you can still play games but don't play them often, I'd stick it out. If you're a gamer and the tray can still play games, I'd get a new one.

1 Like @itchyflop the online is better...how? you can record voice messages, cross game chat, updates and installs that take 5 sec. i prettier looking gui.that makes it easier to buy stuff.the PS gui looks boring and hard to navigate... PS has mandatory installs that take 15min to play your games...the controller analog stick placement is more comfortable on xbox..it's awkward on ps3...achievements were invented on xbox..trophies always syncing for 5min everytime you check them... most games are made with the 360 in mind and then just ported to the ps3... i can go on.. it's a better system....ps3 is just a blu-ray player.

xbox live gold is the cost of 1 game a year... i have no problem paying because i now i am having a superior online experience compared to psn... if you don't want to pay it then that's your choice.

Yea, Xbox might have the edge in social features but in terms of online gameplay,it's no different, that is the main reason we go online after all. so I can see why some don't see the hype about XBL. And so what if people think Sony won this generation? Some like Xbox, some like PS3, that's the way it's always been and always will be. Foolish how you're trying to shove Xbox down people's throats.

@KBFloYd not forgetting your annual subscription PER PLAYER/ USER to allow you to use all the services. i will agree on the annoying install times on ps3. The pad design is better on the ps3 sorry, after 360 controller in my hand then ps its smaller and less clunky !! when you say cross game chat i assume both parties have different games running ?? Some games are made solely for each console, i dunno about them being made for Xbox then ported over ?? being prettier looking doesn't warrent a point in your favour, easier to navigate, no its just different. The ps3 is a blu has blu ray potential yes and at the time they were horrendously priced (like the fkn dvd's now) so we get an entertainment system capable of running and playing at the same capacity as the box !! There are good points for each, its preference of taste. If i sttill had my box (i won't go down the route everyone does with ups !!) or my 2nd or 3rd (see my point there) i would find, infact i remember finding all aspects of the Sony machine uncomfortable for a while. I have to agree however without the failings weve had with the box it is more user friendly and has some really good games. ha brilliant bro, keep gaming :~0
@KBFloYd Depends on what better means. Hardware wise it definitely wasn't better due to failure rates. Kinect is better, but it lacks BluRay. IMHO what makes (or made) it better was the software. Loved the old Dashboard, and hate the new one personally. Think there was winners/losers all around, with WII being the clear winner (albeit not best console IMHO) as it sold more and made money on each unit it sold.
