With some 187 million iOS devices sold to date, Apple Inc. is a behemoth in the mobile technology sector. However, it's not the only mobile giant in the business. Google today trumpeted its own mammoth sales figures, saying that some 500,000 Android devices are activated every day.

Android devices are proving popular.
Android devices are proving popular.

The news stems from the Twitter feed of Google's senior vice president of mobile technology Andy Rubin. He also noted that the figure is growing 4.4 percent week-over-week.

Further, daily Android device activation figures are surging quickly. During last month's Google I/O conference, the tech giant announced (according to GameSpot sister site CNET) that some 400,000 Android-powered devices were being activated each day, up from 300,000 in December, and 100,000 a year ago.

Android market share is also enjoying a rise. According to the latest ComScore data, Android devices account for 36.4 percent of the US smartphone market. That figure handily tops Apple's iOS share (26 percent), as well as Research in Motion's 25.7 percent share and Microsoft's 6.7 percent.
