Dragon Quest X may support Wii U

Square Enix has certainly been taking its time with Dragon Quest X for the Wii, having announced the game in late 2008 and given nary a peep on its particulars since then. With its release date still outstanding and the Wii U's 2012 release window ticking ever closer, Square Enix has now indicated that it hopes to future-proof the Wii title

As part of a conference call with investors (translated and relayed by Andria Sang), Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada was questioned about the reasoning for releasing Dragon Quest X for Nintendo's aging console. Wada responded by saying that the company was looking into ways in which it can make the game compatible with both the Wii and Wii U.

Like the Wii, the Wii U will feature a backward compatibility element, in which gamers will be able to play games for the previous-generation console on their new system. The Wii U features a number of upgrades over the Wii, primarily in the form of high-definition graphical capabilities and a new tablet controller. As for Dragon Quest X, Square Enix has offered gamers scant few bits of information. In an interview earlier this year, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii indicated that Dragon Quest X is being built in the same vein as Dragon Quest VIII, which was the first installment in the franchise to go 3D. With the game's development "on the last parts," Square Enix expects to have more to share later this year.
