Heavy Rain dev teases new project
After ruling out Origami Killer sequel, Quantic Dream director says new game will be "dark," "for adults"; possibly called "Fiv5" or "Infraworld."
Last week, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual awards ceremony for games, and one of the big winners was French outfit Quantic Dream. The studio's PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure title Heavy Rain walked away from the event with accolades for Best Story, Technical Innovation, and Original Music.
Unfortunately, critic approval, strong sales, and now multiple awards still don't add up to a sequel. Speaking to the PlayStation Blog, Heavy Rain director David Cage reiterated that a follow-up for the game still isn't in the cards.
"We will not make a sequel, and I made that very clear from the beginning, regardless of whether the game was a success or a failure, because I wanted to show that this is a new genre that you can use to tell any kind of story, in any style."
Cage followed up that statement by teasing his studio's next game. "For our next project, we’re going to build on what we have discovered with Heavy Rain," he said. "We own this genre of Interactive Drama, and we want to show that Heavy Rain was not a coincidence; it is something that makes sense and we can build on it."
"We’re going to be exploring a different direction, which will still be very dark and still for adults, but completely different to Heavy Rain. Our challenge is to satisfy our fans and also surprise them," he continued.
So what's this new game called? That information may have been sleuthed out by gaming-industry detective Superannuation. In a series of posts to the mystery individual's Twitter feed, Superannuation evidences a URL registration, a LinkedIn new hires page, and a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe trademark registration that the title of the game will be "Fiv5."
However, Fiv5 doesn't appear to be the only project that Quantic Dream is at work on. As seen in the aforementioned LinkedIn page, the studio's loose-lipped new concept artist also claims to be at work on a game called Infraworld, a game that was officially canceled in 2006. However, as spotted by Superannuation, Quantic Dream included an Easter egg in Heavy Rain for Infraworld, and the studio has previously stated that it is currently working on two distinct projects.
