Duke Nukem Forever demo incoming?

Gearbox head Randy Pitchford says that a preview of the 2011 360, PS3, and PC shooter is "important," currently working on timing with publishers.

Duke Nukem Forever, a game long dismissed as vaporware, materialized in a big way at last week's Penny Arcade Expo. In a lavish surprise unveiling, Borderlands' Gearbox Software announced that it had taken over development of the game, which had been in development at the quasi-defunct studio 3D Realms since 1997. According to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, Gearbox has also bought the Duke Nukem intellectual property outright and will develop all future installments in the franchise.

Not only was Duke Nukem Forever unveiled at PAX, but it was also playable in demo form on the show floor. And although the game won't be released until 2011 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Pitchford told UK gaming site VG247 that he is already looking at ways to release a demo to the millions of gamers who weren't at the event.

"I think that is an important thing to do," he told the site. "Now that the cat's out of the bag we can actually make those plans. Now we can get with retailers and figure out the launch window, and figure out demo timing, and work with the first-parties on that. We weren't able to do that until this point."

As outlined in GameSpot's hands-on preview from PAX, the game will feature the crude humor and hectic action that are the franchise's hallmarks. For more on Duke Nukem Forever, watch GameSpot's interview with Gearbox's Pitchford below.

    @pigguy5 ...lol really? Digital PC downloads? oooh wow. Come on friend, we all know you can Download content and even full games with Xbox live. Sure we pay a 10-20 more for a game disc. But I can trade in Console games towards new ones. You CANT trade in PC titles. So really, your argument is busted.

    i still have a funny feeling that this game will be crap lol, all that waiting BOOM, could be epic fail. Man i hope im wrong lol, would be kool if it had PS Move support also

    They promised a hell of a lot of guns in borderlands, and I've yet to see more than 20 unique weapons in that game...

    I remember when I was only 8 and I was waiting for this game, now that I'm 20 its finally here!! its taken 1/7 of my life to get here but its going to be bloody worth it!

    I've been thinking if Duke ever did come out, it wouldn't be good due to being outdated and etc since it was announced so long ago. Also I would usually think that some other company besides 3D Realms working on a Duke game is not a good idea. But man am I happy that other company is Gearbox, I can't even begin to talk about how long I played Borderlands, it was just such a great game. I cannot wait for this game to come out.

    Guys, it's Duke and Duke will always be the king... Master Chief, pffft, Duke was fighting Aliens way before his granddaddy did. To top everything off, this Duke is being developed by the Gearheads at Gearbox who made BORDERLANDS for godsake.

    i like how the duke haters or just people who never believed in duke have just evaporated and a new duke community that was silent despite all the torment he recieved has arrived and so far ive had a difficult time finding someone that has a bad word to say about duke.

    I see some people arguing about PC gaming, I honestly don't play PC games accept Rome: Total War because most of the games these days need pretty brilliant computers to run properly and I just can't afford it. Plus I can't really play with the keyboard and mouse, but I guess that takes practice. So no I have no problem with anyone playing games on the PC.

    I don't know...years of virtually nothing, now they're talking about pushing out a demo...just seems to be a little bit rushed...
    I hope that they do make THIS release date; it be nice to see the game actually come out; however, given the history, I won't get my hopes up until it's actually published.

    hopefully this demo is released on the European PSN , Duke Nukem is one of the few FPS games Im interested in.

    @lithus I agree. The only good distributer of PC games now is Steam. It is a bit too much of a hassle now for PC Gaming and the only reason I still do it is because of mods.

    @lithus ah, but you forget about digital downloads,becoming more and more popular with Pc users, yeah sure we only have one little shelf in the stores but online we have 1000's of titles. Also the games are much cheaper than console counterparts, sometimes by about as much as £15 each so if you buy say 30 games its cheaper than a console + those games, despite the high price of a rig.

    To lithus: To claim that the PC is all but dead in the gaming world is to utter a grave fallacy. You need not look farther than Starcraft II to see this, as there are already tournament institutions offering $85,000 grand prizes on a monthly basis. Certainly, Starcraft II is only one game, but this undoubtedly demonstrates the relevance of PCs in the gaming world. On top of that, two of the industry's most influential game developers, Blizzard and Valve, focus primarily on targeting the PC market. While consoles certainly are a big part of the gaming world (hell, I own all of the current gen systems), PC gaming is far from "dead".

    To GunGriffin: I honestly thought the whole PC vs.Console debate was settled. I guess there are 2 of you left lol. Gaming on the PC isn't even worthwhile anymore. You need to spend 3X's more on a PC rig than what you could on a console that plays virtually the same game. PC=Higher resolution?..at what cost?! The PC is all but dead in the gaming world. Dont believe me? Go into any gameshop and try to find the PC section. It's that little shelf in the back near the bargin bins. Anywho. As for Duke. It's not like it's rising from the gaming grave from a 20 year hiatus. There were multiple crapfests on the PC,PS2, N64 and even cell phones from 1991-2005. Was Duke 3d a great game, you betcha! But like a Family Guy episode...it was funny the 1st time.

    You do realize that they are just finishing the game up right? Gearbox is just putting the polish on a game that has been in development for a long, LONG time. They aren't going to intentionally turn the Duke Nukem franchise into a game they already made. Not that they even have the time or resources to do that..

    There couldn't be a more perfect team for this than Gearbox. They've got a great sense of humor and know how to make an FPS fun. I am assuming it will play similar to a Serious Sam, which is a good thing.

    lets wait till we see it, do you really expect this will be the game we where all waiting for so long ... all of a sudden ... ?! ... isnt it more likly that they just take the name and tag it to something almost unrelated ... I bet they changed the graphical style of borderlands to the comic look only to make it not so obvious that they just take the same engine and set up as they did in borderlands and call it Duke Nukem ... this is much more likly but just wait till we see it ... Duke and the wastelands just dont fit

    DAY ONE FOR MY PC! THATS FOR SURE! Sorry Console fans but Duke was on PC first, and there for I will buy it on PC only. Plus I miss fun shooters like Duke, now all we need is for ID to get DOOMs act back togather because DOOM 3 sucked hard. Next we need a good Quake game, and I think we will be in great shape. Because BFBC2 on PC looks amazing, so dose Metro 2033, and AVP, and don't even get me started on how kick ass Half Life 2 and portal are on PC.

    @kid2812 same here man, just loved that game, never got past 3rd level coz how fick i was. still cant believe that me mum n dad bought me an 18 rated game when i was 7 yrs old....lol
