Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath targeted at PS3

Just Add Water remake of original studio's 2005 Xbox-exclusive swan song to feature Move support, high-definition graphics.

Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath launched on the original Xbox in January of 2005, and while the game received plenty of critical praise, it garnered little attention from consumers. A planned PlayStation 2 port of the game never materialized, but Sony loyalists will finally get a chance to check out the last original Oddworld Inhabitants title. Just Add Water today announced it will launch a downloadable remake of the game for the PlayStation 3 next Easter.

The biggest change for the remake will be the addition of 720p high-definition graphics. The PS3 edition of Stranger's Wrath will also incorporate PlayStation Move support, visual bells and whistles like normal mapping and self-shadowing, and "re-mastered dialogue." The technical quality of the voice samples in the original game was a point of criticism in GameSpot's original review for the title.

Strangers Wrath is the first Oddworld project from the UK-based developer, but it won't be the last. In July, the studio announced that it would be working on multiple Oddworld projects for multiple platforms.

The Oddworld series was first launched in 1997 and is best known for its juvenile sense of humor, socially conscious themes, and platforming gameplay. Two games were released on the PlayStation, and in 2000, the studio signed a deal with Microsoft to publish titles exclusively for the Xbox. Oddworld produced the 3D platformer Munch's Oddysee as a launch title, but the partnership with the console maker dissolved before Stranger's Wrath was finished. Electronic Arts picked the game up in 2004 as part of its EA Partners program and launched it the next year, but Oddworld Inhabitants confirmed its withdrawal from game development soon thereafter.

I loved Strangers Wrath and was gutted Mircosoft didn't manage to get it to run on the 360, hopefully they can port the HD remake to the 360 or PC as well.

I kind of missed the sidescroller action of the original two games. I'm looking forward to a demo.

    Great - I liked Stranger's Wrath. But an Abe's Odyssey/Exodus remake would've been better

"Just Add Water remake of original studio's 2005 Xbox-exclusive swan song to feature Move support, high-definition graphics."

When I first read that, I thought it was a dig, then I saw that it was the name of the studio. I never was an Oddworld fan, but their game plan seemed ambitious at the time and my friends loved it. I hope it turns out well.

I still have my Xbox copy, its in the loft with my old generation games. It wasn't a bad game Oddworld, decent length, would be great to see a new adventure though.

I have to say that this is going to be GOOD even Great! I always loved Strangers Wrath and miffed that it wasnt B.C. for 360 and as agreed with most people its always been under the radar per say but I must say its a MUST HAVE game!! PLUS its gonna be Move compatible! COOL! Can't wait! I wish though that they could put all the Oddworld games HD'ed if you will onto 1 PS3 disc!! Like they are doing with The Sly Cooper games! One downside = DOWNLOAD ONLY! Personally If i am shelling out 15/20 duckets for something I want to be able to hold it in my hand! That is just me! ALL in ALL = MUST HAVE!

Sweet! I, as an owner of the PS2 and not the Xbox, always wanted to play this but never could as my PS2 broke and the 360 wasnt backwards compatible with the game. Good to here it's being remade. will be a buy for me.

This is some of the best news this year.... I'd really like them to do a HD update of Munch's Oddysee too. Infact - all the Oddworld games. A little tiny bit of the gaming me died when they said they would make no more Oddworld games, and this news just made it poke out the ground like a zombie. Sweet.

Yeeesss! yeeeeesssssss......At laaaast, that best of them all.

@spike6958: Read the developer's history fart brains before askin for another installment; it's not gonna happen, not any time soon.

What the heck are u talkin bout moreover? U can't compare the first 2 parts to this one since they're a completely different genre altogether, plus Munch's odyssey got an average score, and after playing it i kinda saw why.

Regardless though, this one's got a thumbs up from all parties during its release. Last but not least, don't be a beggar and try and choose. The fact that they had it exclusively made for Xbox at the time deprived a lot of ppl from experiencing it. So stop being a sour lil girl, and keep your pointless comments to urself.

    Thank you.

This is an "odd" (No pun intended) choice for a downloadable hd remake, espcially since it was originally Xbox exclusive. I hated that this was never made backward compatible with the 360. Playing it in HD with the Move is going to be fun.

    @spike6958

I couldn't agree any more with you. Abe's story was great. And the game was a classic blend of a platformer and a puzzler, sad to see it was abandoned. The studio should either remake the games, or continue the story.

Strangers Wrath was terrible when compared to Abe's Odyssey and Abe's Exodus, even Munch's Odyssey was better, they should be bringing back Abe and finishing his story instead of releasing the worst game in the series again after such a long time without an Oddworld game.

I can't play Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath on my 360 b/c they didn't put it on the backwards compatibility list, and know I find out PS3 owners will have the ability to play. Oh....the irony. In any case, those of you Sony owners who haven't played, play it. It was quite the gem.

Still have the original Xbox game, and Munch's Oddysee.
    **********************************************************
Me too. I would hoping they were going to finish the series with Abe. Both Strangers Wrath and Munch's Oddysee are side stories. Originally Lorne Lanning had said there would be 5 parts to Abe's story. All we got was Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus. There was suppose to be 3 more stories, but Lorne wanted to branch out to other areas of Oddworld and their characters. This is why we got Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath. Now they have something new planned. See here. --- http://www.jawltd.com/?p=546 . Apparently, they have been working with Just Add Water on several new projects and not just PS3 version of Stranger's Wrath.
