Goldeneye 007 gets retailer-exclusive game modes, T-shirt

GameStop and Best Buy customers will be the only players to get invisibility and tag modes this year; Wal-Mart preorders receive Oddjob-themed "Cheater" apparel.

Last month, Activision announced a Goldeneye 007 bundle with a gilded Classic Controller to promote its upcoming remake of the seminal Nintendo 64 first-person shooter. The publisher has picked up its promotional activities today, revealing a trio of retailer-exclusive enticements for players to pick the game up when it arrives November 16.

Gamers who pick up the title at GameStop or Best Buy can receive exclusive codes to unlock the game's invisibility and tag split-screen multiplayer modes, respectively. The invisibility mode (available with preorder) gives players the ability to become invisible for a limited amount of time to sneak up on opponents, while the tag mode makes whoever is "it" unable to score any kills until he or she touches another player.

The modes are said to be exclusive until December 31, 2010, suggesting they will become available to other players after that date. Both the GameStop and Best Buy codes will need to be authenticated online through the Wii before the modes are unlocked, an Activision representative told GameSpot.

The third retailer-specific incentive is a T-shirt offer available to those who reserve the game from Wal-Mart's Web site or purchase it from one of the chain's brick-and-mortar locations at launch. The shirt features the distinctive silhouette of strongman Oddjob's lethal bowler hat, along with the caption "Cheater." Playing as Oddjob in the N64 GoldenEye was frequently frowned upon by players, as his shorter stature made for a harder target and gave him a distinct advantage in matches.

If you have some patience, you won't have to pay extra and pre-order to get these codes. Definetly getting the gold classic controller.

The Activision deal (Gold controller) is the only one worth getting.

I want this shirt very bad. My brother and friends ALWAYS picked oddjob. But this became a disadvantage when I started to always aim my gun slightly down, straight at their head.

The original had plenty of justice done for it. The way this game is going to be mediocre, or a supreme disappointment. They're either going to make it exactly the same as the original, and all the new kids on the block which they're going to try'n market it to are going to think its lame, or they're going to try'n modernize it to make into another COD replica. All I can say is dig the original out of your attic, and be happy that it hasn't been completely violated by a new company yet.

You know what? For once I don't think I even care what the reviews say. I feel the old, childish anticipation, every time I see footage of this game. It looks great, it sounds great, and the production team look like they really want it to be something special that does the original justice. Can't wait!

Hasn't really ruined gaming since every single bit of it is useless fluff.

This just looks like they're trying to make money, the graphics don't seem any better than that of the conduit, there's less to the multiplayer than 007 Nightfire for PC and Gamecube and then there's also the fact that they can't do another Goldeneye with Daniel Craig, it's just not right.

Wonder if they'll do anything like this in the UK...ah well, my main concern is that the game does justice to the original and is just as good. Beyond that, I'm not too fussed.

A couple more thoughts: Daniel Craig is great as Bond, as entertaining as Connery and Brosnan (in Casino Royale at least, I haven't seen QoS). Also, though we SHOULD complain that by doing these bonuses, they're dividing the fanbase, and we shouldn't have to put up with it, take it for what it is; in all likeliness, within 2 months of the game everything will be unlocked. People still play the N64 version today, 13 years later. If it's as good as the original, in the long run it won't matter.

I'll just go ahead and throw myself into the pit of flames and say I'm glad they went with Daniel Craig. The Bond series has always been charmingly campy, but I really, honestly did like the new angle and unrefined, realistic edge Craig gave Bond in Casino Royale. I think he's a perfectly passable Bond, even if Connery & Moore remain my favorites.

Coolyfett wonders what that othe Bond game will be like. The Bloodstone game is copying the PSP Pursuit Force. Its interesting the Wii is getting the remake of an old game. Coolyfett feels that because Bloodstone is a carbine copy of Pursuit Force, Bloodstone will better than Golden eye. Peace & Love.

Aaaaand... watch me not buy this at launch. I'll wait til the date when everything is actually available.

While I'm at it, watch me never buy a Bethesda or Bioware game at launch again, either, and just wait for the inevitable GOTY editions.

...and of course, if I don't buy the game for two months, chances are I may be able to get it used, which puts a whopping $0 in the publisher's pocket.

    GOOD JOB, ACTIVISION!

Best deathmatch ever? 1v1 both placing remote/proximity mines in devious locations on the library level. Goldeneye was awesome but the genre has moved on since then and this is a remake by people who never made the original - the highest this can aim for is just being a good game. It is impossible for it to dominate like the N64 game did.

Brosnan all the way. Craig does not deserve this, but I want this game.

  • cynicalundead

    Posted Sep 3, 2010 9:47 am GMT

This game should have Brosnan anyway, since he was in Golden Eye, not Craig. This is a major continuity issue. I hope this is good though.

@ green dominater -youd really want ea to do it, obviously you had never played goldeneye rogue agent that game was a travesty , not only did ea announce it as a remake at first but they did a second time for the ds version , how pathetic it was it had nothing to do with it so no thanks if id want another developer to do it free radical should have in the gc era ,

There needs to be some set rules in the gaming industry. For example, if you pay for a game you should get everything when you pay for it.

  • green_dominator

    Posted Sep 3, 2010 9:06 am GMT

This game no matter what the developer says their intentions are is a travesty waiting to happen. In a way it's cool that Goldeneye is being remade but I wish someone else was publishing it like EA or Ubisoft heck even Bethesda.....
ALSO, I think the idea of locking out game modes is tacky, even if I was a Wii player I wouldn't touch this with a ten meter cattle prod....

GoldenEye has remained one of my most fond games through the years, and I'm super excited for the revamp...except, why the F is Daniel Craig in this?! Of all the Bonds, he is the worst, and a crappy actor to boot. Sean Connery is THE James Bond, and Pierce Brosnan was WAY better as Bond than Craig is. Heck, even Dalton was better than Craig, and he sucked. I hope there is some major reason why they had to change the Bond in this game, and not just to appeal to people who don't know squat about the original game or the movie. Seriously, if someone where to pick this game up in a store with Brosnan on the cover and think "this obviously isn't the current James Bond, so I'm not buying it" then that person should be slapped and forced to watch the awesomeness that is the movie.

  • mtodavk

    Posted Sep 3, 2010 6:30 am GMT

ugh....Daniel Craig isn't james bond. Pierce Brosnan was waaay better. I'd even love to see it with Sean Connery.

Why in the hell would they lock out part of the customer base from game-modes at release? Why do they always have to divide their customer base into smaller sections? IDIOTIC.

  • C810

    Posted Sep 3, 2010 1:57 am GMT

C'mon. Why did they put in Daniel Craig? Why couldn't they have just left Pierce Brosnan? He was such a better Bond in my opinion. I have a Wii, but I refuse to get this now because it a) looks like a bad remake of one of my favorite games of all time and b) has Daniel Craig.

M summed up Daniel Craig's James Bond perfectly when she said "Any thug can kill. I need you to take your ego out of the equation." Craig's Bond isn't slick or stealthy. He's too unrefined
