Red Dead redeems Take-Two earnings, ships 6.9M

Publisher more than triples quarterly sales to $354.1 million; L.A. Noire officially delayed to first half of next year.

Take-Two is riding a little higher in the saddle thanks to the success of Red Dead Redemption. Today the publisher released "significantly better than expected" financial results for the quarter ended July 31, saying the critically acclaimed open-world Western had sold-in 6.9 million copies to retailers worldwide.

Company-wide, revenues for the quarter totaled $354.1 million, more than triple the $94.9 million in sales Take-Two posted for the same quarter the previous year. It also posted a net profit for the quarter of $5.9 million, a dramatic improvement from the $56.5 million loss it chalked up for the same period of 2009.

The numbers were so positive that Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick believes the current fiscal year will mark the first in almost a decade that Take-Two has posted a full fiscal year profit without the benefit of a major Grand Theft Auto release. To accomplish that goal, the company still has a ways to go before the October 31 end of its fiscal year. Through the first nine months of the fiscal year, Take-Two is still running a net loss of $11.2 million. Despite that, the company is at least heading in the right direction; at the same point of its last fiscal year, Take-Two was running a net loss of $116.9 million.

Beyond Red Dead Redemption, Take-Two said sales were led by Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, Grand Theft Auto IV, NBA 2K10, and Borderlands. Digital distribution is also a focal point for the company, as Feder said that the publisher has multiple new Borderlands and BioShock 2 add-ons in development, in addition to the already announced slate of Red Dead Redemption content.

The news of Red Dead Redemption's sales success wasn't surprising, but neither was the news of a delay for Rockstar's L.A. Noire. Originally announced in 2005, L.A. Noire is now expected to see release sometime in the first half of calendar 2011.

While the silence surrounding the Team Bondi-developed project caused some to assume it wouldn't be making its original October deadline, word of L.A. Noire's delay first emerged from analysts and retailers last week. Take-Two CEO Ben Feder said in a postearnings conference call with analysts that the company showed the game off to a great reception at a recent GameStop manager's convention and expressed confidence that the extra time will result in another critical and commercial hit for the company.

    I guess every Rockstar / Take Two game has become a must buy for me. Looking forward eagerly to Max Payne 3. And yes, if the PC version of this comes out, then I'm getting it for sure. I for one, surely vote for a PC version !!!

    I like R* games they take on a journey, twists and turns aplenty, but sadly you know it never ends well.

    @FOREVERgod

    Well, the point I'm making is that most people probably prefer one or the other. I do agree with you, however, is that a good deals of PC gamers are rather closet minded. @NathanWootton

    Well, I'm speaking from personal experience only. The majority of PC gamers I know outside the Internet like PC gaming more than Consoles mainly because of the input, myself included. Like I pretty much just said, to each his own.

    gandaf007 Nope, The main Reason People Prefer PC to xbox or ps is that you can achieve higher Frame rates, cause you are not limited to hardware you can simply upgrade you hardware xbox and ps u cannot

    @gandaf007

    I personally hate mouse/keyboard controls but I invested in a pc because there are a few games that I do like to play. I just don't like the closet mindset MOST pc gamers have.

    I played this on my PS3 and LOOOOVED it. But I would sure love to buy it for my PC. The improved visuals and controls would be well worth buying it again.

    @FOREVERgod

    I think the main reason PC gamers don't buy a console is because they prefer the controls better, not because they don't have the money to buy it. Also, if this helps at all I'm primarily a PC gamer and I have played this game on consoles and I think I would love it even more if I could use m/kb

    RDR would sell great on the pc if they take the time to port it properly, and take advantage of the pc's superior technology. Musclenightmare, lol, not all of us are pirates, some of us enjoy taking care of those that put out quality games. Perfect example, although, I think it was mega over-rated, is SC2, a pc game specific, sold over 3 million first 48 hours, just in america, that's not including korea, so, rockstar, take the time, give us a stable version, and you will make millions, simple. Heck, I hate going online to validate a game, but more companies should do it, don't make a telephone option, make it mandatory that you must log on to a secured rockstar server, and validate the cd key to play it off or online. And also, console games dont have the upperhand on the best games, lol, how is that possible, 90percent of console games came from the pc, ALL of you top sellers are pc originals, minus god of war and a few others, but the big dogs? all those fps' that everyone plays, pc original, the only reason, as of now, that consoles do better, is because piracy isn't as easily accomplished, as it is on pc. But, most of my buddies, are console players, mostly sport games, but they have so many hacked games for their consoles, it's ridiculous. In the end, Pc games rule, it's not even close, even gta4, lol, looks and plays so much better on pc, didn't in the begining, but in the end, it's not close.

    I don't get this.. pc gamers will spend hundreds of dollars trying to make their pc meet requirements for games.. but will try soo hard to get the games for free... WTF?!?!?

  • Trogeton

    Posted Sep 5, 2010 7:22 am GMT

    I think it's funny.. on all the time I see " when will this game release on pc?" but you NEVER see "When will this game release on the consoles?" because console have the upper hand on the best games and we are not afraid to pay for dlc, with consoles there is never a wait after the official game

  • BlackBaldwin

    RDR is an ok game, I believe if that game was made and developed by another studio and put out by a different publisher it probably wouldn't of done soo well. But anything rockstar touches usually always gets a lot of attention from the gaming crowd and over hyped I believe. But true as rain I love take two I think they are a publisher that never disappoints keep that success train rolling guys!

    I'm tired of hearing pc nerds whining about games not being released on pc. I prefer consoles over pc gaming. But I bought a kick-ass pc because I got tired of mmos not releasing on consoles (FFXIV here I come!). If you want to play Red Dead buy a freaking console. Geez if you got a pc you should be able to save 200-300 bucks for a console.

    My comp exceeds the requirements for GTA 4 and it's completely unplayable though it runs. I doubt RDR for PC would work at all.

    I wonder why the R* has so mutch discase with the community of PC gamers. We are consumers just like any other console player. This lack of respect for not passing news about a possible PC version lets me paddy. The games that most had profits came in all plataforms. Where is my freedon to choose what console i wanna play.

  • metalkid9

    Posted Sep 3, 2010 11:17 am GMT

    Rule of thumb. R* releases the PC version of their games 6 months after the console release. For fellow PC gamers, expects RDR sometime in Nov.

    @ravenguard90 I so agree. GTA IV would ahve sold a helluva lot on pc if it optimiation was better. i'm happy as i only picked it up recently and all the crap optimisation was fixed by then :-)
    I hope they dont do they same for rdr but always A BAD PORT IS BETTER THAN NO PORT! atleast we ll able to play it if it comes to pc, no matter how bad the port is..

  • Richardthe3rd

    Seriously. I would've tried GTA IV if I'd have had a quad core with a $500 equivalent GPU at the time. I just lost interest when it dropped and ran like crap.

    God knows it's easy enough to pick up these days. Steam has it on sale every other week for chicken feed.

    @soccerj75

    The only reason GTAIV bombed hard on PC is because its requirements to run it well rival that of Crysis when it launched. Optimization was horrendous on that game, leading to memory leaks and such in the game. Only later on did they fix it, but the damage was already done. If anyone's to blame for the poor PC adoption of the game, it's Rockstar for slacking hard to develop it.

    No point in making this game for PC.GTA IV bombed hard on PC and this will too. Better just stick to consoles,Rockstar, thats where your real magic is and will continue to do so in the future.

    They were already close to not releasing GTA4 on PC, they did anyways, but people were pissed they didn't spend enough time on the port and it sold like crap.

    Now they're even more hesitant since they don't want to spend the time and resources on it just to have it sell piss all.....which frankly is exactly what would happen.

    Hopefully now they will announce a new GTA for 2012. One thing I love about Rockstar is that despite making a series they always go back in time, to times before already released games, so this could mean that another Red Dead Redemption could be made.

    @Telekenesis123

    The game cost as much as GTA4 to make, in the vein of $100 million. They needed to sell 4 million copies just to make that back. And when it says "...running at a net loss of $11 million..." it means that they expected to make $11 million more than they did. Not that they are actually losing money.

    heres a tip for Take Two keep churning out good games like RDR, GTA, Midnight club,bioshock and stop sponsoring 12 year sitins(Duke Nukem Forever) that might reduce the overall loss next fiscal year
