3D PS3 Blu-ray going online in October

Sony says console's high-def media player will gain stereoscopic tech next month via firmware update; Music Unlimited announced for Europe.

In June, Sony rolled out the first batch of stereoscopic 3D-enabled titles for the PlayStation 3, starting with Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, and PAIN. However, the Japanese electronics giant has been slower to introduce its 3D tech to movies played through the PS3's Blu-ray player, but that will soon change.

Engadget reports that Sony announced as part of its 2010 IFA press conference in Berlin, Germany, today that the PS3's Blu-ray player will be updated with stereoscopic 3D functionality in October. The update will reportedly be released as part of a firmware update for the console.

The publisher went on to note that a handful of past and future movies will feature 3D support, including James Cameron's Avatar, The Green Hornet, and the next Spider-Man. Notably, Sony's senior director of 3D development, Mick Hocking, told GameSpot at Gamescom last month that some 20 3D titles would be available within the next 12 months.

As with 3D games, Blu-ray movies using the stereoscopic technology that are played through the PS3 require a special TV set. Sony's Bravia line of 3D-capable HDTVs went on sale this spring, priced from $1,700 to $4,230.

Beyond 3D movies, Sony offered European PS3 owners some goods at the 2010 IFA conference, announcing a new cloud-based music-distribution service that will be available later this year. Called Music Unlimited, the service can be accessed through the PS3, along with Sony's 2010 models of network-enabled devices like Bravia TVs, and it will offer "millions of songs stored and synchronized through the cloud."

Sony did not offer pricing information for Music Unlimited. The company also did not indicate whether the service will be available in North America, telling GameSpot only that it is "pursuing a phased roll-out approach in order to provide the best possible service experience to consumers. Further information will be announced in time."

are you people stupid or something? you don't want 3D, you turn 3D off. is that so difficult? you think you can handle that?

Its a free update which is adding a feature. People get over yourself they are not forcing 3D on you. Its for people who wants the 3D experience.

When Playstation 3 was first released, the PS3 games would get a lower score in graphics compared to the Xbox 360 the same reason why PS2 games got lower graphics scores when arriving on Xbox 1.

So, if a game on Ps3 had the same graphics as the 360 version, it'd get a lower score, because of the "standards." Get it?

A game comes on 360, and it looks the same on PS3, they were like; "why is a PS3 game having Xbox 360 graphics? Why doesn't that PS3 game look like Metal Gear Solid 4? It should use the Cell Processor!"

Still, most of the people who bring up the "biased" talk are probably fanboys that may have post history in console war discussions.

I don't know why people here are complaining about a free update. I think its is awesome that they are giving you the option free of charge to watch 3D movies and play 3D games. No one is forcing you to go out and buy a 3D TV. But in case you ever do you will not have to spend money on a 3D Blue-ray player now. I have no complaints about free updates.

I'll note that most PS3 owners, whether considered fanboys or not, think that GS shows favoratism to the Xbox 360 when in fact they pour the love of the Xbox 360 simply because it's been much more successfull than the PS3. But the PS3 is also *seems* to be closing the gap. I own both consoles and still love the Xbox 360 better. And while this new update will allow the PS3 to play 3D games and blu-ray movies, I will *NOT* be making use of that feature. It's a gimmick and one I hope fades out quickly. It's more distracting than inspiring and leaves me with a major migrain headache halfway through a movie.

@ SicklySunStorm - Am not a fanboy SicklySunStorm, I love my PS3 and a fan of it, but I wouldnt mind having an Xbox360 too if I had the money, to play some of it's exclusive games, like Gears of War etc.

"If anything, the last few ... reporting anyway, rather than some direct attack on the 360." - Yes they are just news that need to be told, as you said thats not what I refered though.

I see some favour from GS to Xbox360 sometimes, indirectly. Cant say specific cause I could be wrong in some cases without decent research, but I will note some small spots I saw.

For example most of the games that are released on PS3 and Xbox360, usually when I clicked on a newly reviewed game, the link takes me to the Xbox360 version of the game. And at the article that I posted this comment "Does Gamespot hate so much the PS3?" it is a PS3 article and they had a picture with an Xbox360. This gives me the impression that they have something against the PS3, favour Xbox360, they trying to send a message or something, make fool of PS3, maybe, I dont know, by adding a Picture for 3D with Xbox360 on an article about 3D and PS3. Adding "hate" and "much" in my comment might been a bit harsh, yes, but that was the first word that came in my mind after reading the article and had a closer look at the image.

I see that they might have changed the picture now if am in the right article...

Hope I cleared something at least for you SicklySunStorm.

Btw, for paranoia you should refer to fanboysm...

What the hell is with all the negative comments about 3D here? Are they all from people with only one eye or gaunt, frail nerds who can't stomach a car drive faster than 30 miles per hour? Going 3D is as natural for gaming as increasing hardware specs. Hating on it is like hating a new console because it has more power than the last generation did. It doesn't make any sense.

I love 3D since I saw Avatar. For games though it's going to tax the processors a lot more, so I'll have to see these games on a 3D TV before I actually get one. If I like it I can see myself buying a 3D TV in the next few years.

Could care less about 3D gaming. I don't feel like buying a 3D ready T.V along with 3D sun glasses. This 3D stuff for video games is just a trend and it will die out. leave 3D to the Movies and iMax.

    @RhythmMan
I'll just wait until all the BluRay -devices (inc. PS3) optimize 3D onto any HDTV with HDMI v1.3 & HDMI v1.4 inputs.

and I'll get my Polarized 3D Glasses for 15 euros here.

I can just imagine Uncharted 3 in 3D. Damn.

Movies look SO good in 3D, and I've been playing PS3 on my friends 3DTV (Motorstorm demo is impressive). I'm just hesitating on the price. Most sets don't even come with the glasses, another $200 each! And I heard there's going to be glasses-free sets coming out too. Using a variation of the 3DS tech.

I've gone 3 years without a pay raise, and the economy is still slow. Maybe if things get better I'll open my wallet for it :-)

But you know guys what would be so cool , the helmet you put on and it makes you think you are in the game , like inside the game , i didnt try 3D yet so i am not sure if that is it but if so that is exellent idea too bad its freaking expensive as hell

I mean 3D Gaming is soooo cool , the only downside is 3D TV's are soooo expenisve you know , we berly got HDTV's and now upgrading to 3D TV in this financial time is tuff , so but 3D option is superb

With 3D HDTV's costing $1,700-$4,230 it will be a long time before 3D gaming catches on. The ecomony is still not the greatest. So not very many people will be buying 3D capable HDTV's for a while. Music unlimited sounds like a great idea. Could help Sony take on Apple and The ipod/ipad/iphone "iEmpire" The unlimited music will catch on a lot faster than 3D gaming.

@robalemcl no 3d movie lasts for less than an hour. people would be angry if they didnt. but since you want to be smart and everything "opticians" recommend that no one really watch things in 3d for more than 30 minutes. it isng going to have your eyes oozing out of your head, but it CAN dasmage your eyes over time, so why would someone want to be FORCED into playing a game in 3d? like i said, if i get this, and i have a game which says it is REQUIRED i play in 3d, i will not play that game anymore.

HA!

eye doctors are going to LOVE this! from what is told, 3d is made to only be seen or experienced in short bursts, no longer than an hour. but movies(what 3d is primarily used in) run for hours. and who plays a game for an hour or less? haaha. yeah, companies are going to hate this because of co-pay! i can see the conversations with eye doctors now. patient: my eyes are BAD
    doctor: why?
patient: i have been playing my ps3 in 3d!
doctor: that will be 500 dollars. how will you be paying? man, i hate 3d, and i am getting a ps3 when this is happening, and i have no plans or intentions of playing anything in 3d. if this was an optional update, i would be fine, but if you are trying to make me run to best buy with 300 dollars for 2 pairs of 3d glasses, you can be rest assured that ps3 will be on the counter in gamestop with me spending my money on halo reach and a new psp.

My only question is, "Why didn't Gamespot post this story - http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/xbox-360-3d-gaming-a-reality-with-lg-partnership/ on their site? They posted a PS3 article that shows XBox 360 playing 3D games on an LG 3D HDTV. Brilliant job Gamespot. It doesn't get much better then that.
