Brad Pitt to play leading role in Red Dead Redemption movie?

Hollywood sources say prolific heartthrob actor will play John Marston in film based on Rockstar Games' popular Western.

Source: Hollywood news site Showbizspy.

What we heard: In November 2009 Brad Pitt's production companies Reliance Big Entertainment and Plan B Entertainment bought the rights to the forthcoming Dark Void film, but that may not be the only movie project tied to the storied actor.

Sources told the Hollywood news outlet Showbizspy that Brad Pitt is the "hot favorite" to star in an upcoming film based on the events of Rockstar Games' critically lauded and commercially successful Western, Red Dead Redemption. The sources say the Fight Club and Meet Joe Black star will play the game's troubled protagonist, John Marston.

“This is an exciting project with a great character at the center of it,” a source told the Web site. “The idea is to make this in the style of an epic Western movie but with a few modern touches. Brad is perfect for the role and he is being given first refusal.”

Unfortunately, the report did not include the names of possible supporting cast members, a projected release date for the film, or any other details on the project.

The official story: A Rockstar Games representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation."

Bogus or not bogus?: Today's rumor is the first mention of a Red Dead Redemption film. While fans may be excited about the prospect of a film based on the game, if the project is real, it's likely only in the very early planning stages.

Further, Pitt is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, and he is likely offered "first refusal"--the ability to be the first actor to say no to a project--frequently. If the project is indeed real, Pitt may pass on the project, leaving the Marston role open to another actor.

    Oh no, not him. If anybody deserves to be John Marston it would be Karl Urban. Hopefully they can get Lee Majors to play the Marshall as well.

    well pitt and depp r probaly the 2 best and most wanted actors and my 2 favorite so anything with one of them in it will be nothing short of amazing!!!

    WHY would you wanna make a RDR film? I mean, it's a western...Tweak the story, change the names and you have an original film.

    I think they should just use the ENTIRE cast of Full House, in all their current glory! Just think about it?!! Danny Tanner as John Marston??

    I guess you could always get the cast of Family Matters to do it if the Full House bunch is too busy because of all their success..

    You could have the Full House cast play the good guys, and Family Matters play the bad guys.. Think about it Carl(family matters) could be Bill Williamson VS Danny Tanner(john marston)

    It would practially write itself.

    without Clint Eastwood, a western movie feels empty no matter how good it might get but frankly this is gonna be another failed movie based on games.

    I have a list... of companies who have lost my respect by making stupid decisions like making movies of video games who's bulk of gameplay(which I found epic and emmersing) is small storyless quests and playing blackjack. The actual storyline would last about an hour, the side stories taking up 3 hours. Rockstar, welcome to the list.

    Ahhh why do they always have to ruin the source content by creating these crappy movies? Prince of Persia had so much hype and cast and technical side seemed promising but I just though it was a waste of time. If Red Dead Redemption does come out, I expect a lot of violence. The last thing I want to see is a toned-down spaghetti western with plenty of cheesy moments. I honestly dont see it working, unless they work from a completely new plot, its just gonna be a fail as far as I'm concerned.

    @ runstalker I didn't know Pitt was doing that for Lousiana thats awesome. He always seemed like a cool guy anyways so it's not surprising to hear. The only real drama I've ever really heard was about the Angelina/Aniston thing. Other then Pitts personal life I think he's a good actor. He's not mind blowing or changing the game in the film industry but it's hard to recall many movies he's in that I don't like.

    No way will Pitt do it. As for a movie based on the game...won't feel much different than any other western, will it? Unless the plot is right out of the game, why bother?

    I dont care where, but please but Clint Eastwood in this film somewhere, anywhere. Heck, make him the old crazy guy who's looking for flowers for his skeleton wife. You can never not have enough Eastwood haha.

    If they get a great screenwriter, a strong supporting cast besides just brad pitt (he isnt enough alone), and really stay true to the interesting story behind John Marston, this could make for the come backs of westerns in cinema. It has potential, so long as they don't get some s*** writer and s*** cast and low budget to make this into another crap game based movie.

    Pitt is in the midst of signing on for another 150 rebuilt houses for 4-5 person families in Louisiana, literally re-filling some hurricane-demolished streets. As much as he gets roped into the trash media's coverage (usually preying on wife/kids), he's good people. He tends to choose excellent scripts as well. If he actually signs on to RDR, it gives the movie sudden potential.

    lol i posted it backwards, oops... also IM SO MAD AT ROCKSTAR FOR letting that damn multiplayer glitch ride out and let whomever exploited it KEEP their legendary statuses instead of RIGHTFULLY and FAIRFULLY for ALL OF the REST OF US put their experience level back to where it were before, i'd have the platinum for this game if i'da been one of the ppl to exploit the glitch and got to the max level... so sad...

    posses!! but in reality the game isn't as big as it seemed, as ONE train is only in the game.... Would be nice also being it's based on true american history of how the west downed itself down, why couldn't they make it bigger and make zones as states, hence the north being part of colorado, the west being california, the south being mexico, the east being maybe or mostly large portions of texas and the middle being arizona! and how about an expansion pack to bring oregons western heritage into motion! i don't know what i'm talking about lol, i'm just day dreaming on hwo i WISHed the game would have turned out being they'd been on this game 5 years plus, i most certainly would have expected a MUCH larger default sandbox map ATLEAST and WAYYYYY MORE hideouts to raid!!! Also it would be SO COOL if there were DLC for the game that put us players in the shoes of davie crockett and play at the alamo and such. Putting truthful history in video games only makes them MOREFULLY EDUCATIONAL and better and more accepting for parents regardless of the violence. I've learnt A TON of my knowledge just from video games. Hell i'm sure A TON of people didn't know what an EMP was until they play COD.... learning experience people... nothing wrong with learning and haveing fun!!

    Time to grow that hair back out MR. Brad Pitt!! Reprise the days of your Troy(achilles)/interview with the vampire days and rock on brotha! I think you could make a good john marston, and PLZ MAKE THIS AN EPIC atleast two and a half our movie!! IF NOT make it a trilogy!! Red Dead Redemption I HOPE also will come out with a follow up red dead redemption 2 so we can play a FULL game based on johns son and watch the west truely die and transpire to the industrial age!! I am MOST dissapointed though that the game as what i was most looking foward to was robbing trains with our

    the RDR plot is very consistent with regular western movies, I could see the transition seamless. Just get Robert Duvall to produce it.

    Like Absolut Gamerz said, Sawyer from Lost would be good. But seeing as the voice for Marsten and the face look so much like Josh Brolin who played Llewelyn Moss in No Country For Old Men I think Brolin IS Marsten and by far the best actor to play him.
