Big in Japan August 9-15: Wii Party, Sengoku Basara

Nintendo minigame collection and Capcom historical action game hold sway as no new releases crack the Japanese top 10.

The week of August 9-15 was a quiet one for Japanese game retailers, with no new releases managing to crack the Media Create top 10 sales chart. Even a new release might have been hard-pressed to top the list, as Nintendo's minigame collection Wii Party continued to post gaudy numbers, selling nearly 125,000 copies in its sixth week of release.

The PlayStation 3 version of Capcom's historical action game Sengoku Basara 3 was a distant second, topping 35,000 copies sold and giving Sony's console its only representative on the charts. The PSP held its own, with Namco Bandai's latest Tales of Phantasia and Sega's Hatsune Miku: Project Diva 2 taking fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Games for Nintendo's Wii and DS claimed seven of the top 10 chart spots, but only two of the top five. Level Five's Inazuma Eleven 3 for the DS finished third with sales over 28,000, and Nintendo's handheld was also represented by Eigokoro Kyoushitsu, Tomodachi Collection, and the latest Taiko no Tatsujin title. Besides putting a game at the top of the charts, the Wii also saw Super Mario Galaxy 2 hit sixth place, with Dragon Quest Monsters: Battle Road Victory landing in ninth.

While Nintendo was all over the software charts, Sony fared best in the hardware wars. The PSP and PS3 were the best-selling systems of the week, moving 35,734 units and 33,057 units, respectively. However, that magic touch didn't extend to the PSP Go, which had a particularly uninspired week, selling just 608 new systems and bringing up the rear yet again. The DSi LL was Nintendo's best-selling effort, moving nearly 28,000 new systems into users' hands. The Wii was close behind, topping 25,000 systems sold.

i think people out there should understand that PSP Go was released to satisfy people with small hands who doesnt like the UMD slot(sarcasm)i wanted 1 as well but when i tried one it was lil bit small for my palm and my fingers had to play contortionists to reach the buttons.Anyways, good going Sony with PSP and PS3 sales.
This does show that now that most Japanese holds a Wii,they are turning toward Sony for some high graphics and HD display games.Maybe things will change a wii bit for Xbox when Monster Hunter Frontier is released in Japan(If its released)

I hate this separate places for the designs of DS, it's like you would put PS3, PS3 slim, PS3 with move, X360, X360 slim and X360 with Kinnect it's just wrong, the difference between are only two cameras and some new online features, and bigger/smaller screens. PSP bothers me also, but they are more diverse then the DS's

Wii party is in the lead? gonna hate that game

Separating the sales of the DSi LL, DSi and DSi is like separating the Playstation 3 or 360 sales based off the color and hardware...

I think they should do something like take the population of Japan (everyone, babys, kids, teens, adults, and old folks) and compair it to the number of units sold for these games and game systems. Since I have heard that every family in Japan owns at least 3 DSs (all of the DSs) according to the total amount sold in Japan. I wouldnt be surprised if the amount of game systems sold comes close to the amount of people living in Japan, or maybe even exceding it.

Oh also congrats to Nintendo for again topping the charts with software (people need to understand that everyone, deffinetly in Japan, whos going to get a Wii/ DS has probably already made the purchase, though there will still be some of the late comers )

well, the only reason for the PSP Go was to "emphasize" on the DD trend.
it made me consider getting downloadable games on my PSP3000 when even though I was totally against DD.
it marked the begining of a new era of some sort.

Yeah, if I got a PSP, I would definitely go for the 3000 instead.

I am pretty sure the PSP go is the biggest failure ever. Glad I am not the only one who thought that paying more for a smaller screen was a bad idea.

its hard for me to believe that video games started in japan for the most part. I live in japan. I have to tell you. American invented some things. The japanese do it better like cars and tv. Japan invented somethings and we do it better like sushi and video games. these games are all wack!!!
