Gameloft Q2 revs lifted by iPhone, iPad

French casual games publisher sees sales rise 15% to $44 million thanks to 113% growth on Apple's handheld devices.

Apple has ridden the launch of the iPad and iPhone 4 to substantial success over the past few months, but it isn't the only tech company benefiting from the new hardware. Reporting on its second-quarter earnings this week, casual gamemaker Gameloft reported sales of €33.6 million ($43.9 million), up 15 percent from the year prior. At the half-year mark, Gameloft sales have reached €66.6 million ($87.2 million), up 11 percent year-over-year.

Gameloft did not report net income for the period. However, the France-based publisher did note that it will release its full half-year earnings report on August 31.

While Gameloft attributed its mounting success to a growing global proliferation of smartphones, it said the bulk of its success came from Apple's devices. During the April-June period, App Store sales for games released on the iPhone and iPad grew 113 percent. Gameloft also attributed its sales growth to an increased share in Java- and Brew-based phones.

Gameloft said that the bulk of its sales came in the West, with Europe and North America both accounting for 34 percent of the company's revenues during the period. All other regions contributed to the remaining 32 percent of quarterly sales.

    So... 11 comments. My fear? in 10-years, 100 comments by now. The stylus is more fun than pure touch screen, but we still need physical buttons for action gaming. Please kids, hear me now, believe me after I die... But never forget the buttons. Promise?

    I'm pretty sure that every game they make is a quality rip off of some other game.

    Here's what Gameloft did, in a nutshell:

    They saw the the iPhone/iPod Touch's capacity for 3D games. Then they also noticed that most of the big developers were ignoring the platform. So, they took classics (i.e. Soulcalibur, Halo, CoD, Diablo, Warcraft, etc.) and made generic versions (the same way a super-market or pharmacy does) and tapped into the lucrative iStore. You can call them unoriginal all you want, but blame the main developers for the ignoring the device. Gameloft makes fun games for the most part. I rather play them than wait for Bungie or Activision to acknowledge the iTouch.

    Yea to call Gameloft original is a bit of a stretch, but then again most games out there arent that original, all games do in one way or another "lift" elements that have succeded in previous games. Good for gameloft for its big earnings, they went and created products for a flourishing mobile phone game market. Funny how only a few years ago cell phones were just for making phone calls and other than snake there was really no games for them.

    Did Gameloft ever fix the issue on N.O.V.A., where you couldn't invert the y axis?

    @koospetoors

    Hehe, agreed. Gameloft isn't very original, and none of their games are really that good. Maybe Nova, but I don't have an iPad, so I don't really know. I've got a Wii game they made, something with Mii quizes. It was fun for a while, but I don't think their games are supposed to last very long.

    "Nova is one of gameloft's original iPad games"

    hahahahah, since when did Gameloft ever do something original? while I would agree that Nova is a very good FPS, its definitely not original.
