APB developer reveals next project

Realtime Worlds teases Project MyWorld as a fusion of social media, social gaming, and traditional gaming; due out in 2011.

Realtime Worlds' work on its most recent game, APB, is far from finished, but the developer has already started on a potentially larger and more ambitious follow-up.

"What would it look like if Nintendo built Google Earth?" is the question the developer posed on a recently launched Web site. That query is used to describe Realtime Worlds' next offering, which is currently labeled as a mix of social gaming, social networking, and traditional gaming now known as Project: MyWorld.

"Project: MyWorld turns the real world into a fun 3D social gaming experience. Project: MyWorld is a virtual re-creation of the real world combined with 3D gaming and social media," reads the description.

Additionally, the game's screenshot gallery juxtaposes images of photographic imagery of famous worldwide locations next to their in-game renderings. The locations include London's Buckingham and Westminster palaces, Urquhart Castle in Loch Ness, England's famous Stonehenge formation, and Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.

Further, a YouTube trailer (embedded below) shows that the game will be for the PC and will have players erecting everything from small buildings to entire cities. Additionally, the teaser trailer shows air, land, and sea travel options, a player communication component, and an openness that incorporates all types of minigames.

A second trailer on the site went into greater detail but has since been pulled. In it, a narrator confirmed that the technology behind MyWorld has been in development for "years," and it allows the game to act as a tool like Google Earth.

The developer says it is currently working with publishers and business partners and is soliciting fan input on Facebook and Twitter. Realtime Worlds is also now accepting beta applications and plans to let everyone explore its world sometime next year.

Better make it a facebook application than a separate game

This was a very bad move, at least from the PR perspective.

APB is getting a lot of flack for just flat-out not working. Most players can't even experience the content to decide whether it's sub-par or not, forget the actual quality of the game.

This should have been kept under wraps until their other, larger userbase was pacified. And by that, I mean 'until they fixed their shoddy MMO, which had amazing potential but will never reach it if all people can get to see is the title screen'.

Maybe if the developers had focused on APB instead of this crap, the game wouldn't have been so bad.

Instead of making one good game, it looks like they've made 2 bad ones.

I'm glad I didn't try APB as it sounds pretty rubbish. I don't really get the point of this either.

And because so many people seem to think it IS rubbish, I have no idea why they would announce their next project so soon. I automatically think, "this is probably going to be crap too".

I think I would rather wait for an updated version of Google Earth. Seen as Google make things that actually work and are good.

Q: "What would it look like if Nintendo built Google Earth?".
A: Like Google Earth, but cutesy and twee.

Q: "What would it look like if Realtime Worlds built Google Earth?"
    A: Embarrassingly bad.

    @ Coolgamer
    Haha.. "User Input" good one.

But yeah they seem to be doing the same thing as champions onine, Make a crap mmo, keep it up for like a year or two, while working on the next crap mmo.
When will people learn not to subscribe to crap mmos?

The only announcement that could top such a drastic change in a developer's usual offering of products is Epic Games deciding that they should make the next Farmville. (Of course, I hope that would never happen.)

It's a shame people actually believe that games studios dedicate 100% man power to the development of one game (say APB) ... and then shift everybody to another project... given the scope of this game, I thought it was pretty obvious that MyWorld has been in development for quite some time and probably has nothing to do with APB's failures. Perhaps that was just me though =/

casual market is encouraging developers to stop making games for us gamers. It's quite unfortunate since not enough people buy all those big budget games anymore

First off, it just looks bad when you release a project like APB and it's so un-refined and un-finished and then you just announce another project. Cause people will just look at that as you the developer trying to bail on your unfinished game. Second, games like Second Life already exist. E rated social games never work, that's what Facebook is for, it's social and it's got stupid little games by the dozen. I don't need a 3D representation of Facebook. Especially one I have to pay for.

I would maybe be interested, but APB was bad so faith has been lost. However an eye shall still be kept...

I'm not sure about this: Seems more like a social networking experiment and less of a real game.

Are we supposed to be excited about a developer that hocks unfinished products, then cheerleads themselves with regard to future products? We already have Mythic.

Fix the **** you have out now.

Well, it would be released first with unresponsive motion controls, then later on, they'll fix that with an add-on and charge you for the privilege...

good concept, but needs to be brought up to next gen, but if that is the developer's way of showing some art in his own manner, we need to wait a little bit to find out how his world is visualized in his mind

I live in Dundee where Realtime Worlds is based and my flat mate works in the games industry and he was telling me about this well before APB was released. They were working on both projects at the same time however he was under the impression that this had been shelved as they were under orders from EA to fix APB. Obviously not.

Call me negative,... but should they not be fixing problems with the APB (The game that everyone has already paid for) before they move on to new projects?

  • green_dominator

    Posted Jul 28, 2010 11:43 pm GMT

So much for devoting their time completely to APB, I guess life in the APB universe isn't enough after all lol
Seriously though I've been bored with social networking sites for a couple years now and I really don't have any desire to play a videogame like it was a social network site and I don't care much for games on those sites......
