Call of Duty: Black Ops operating on DS

Activision confirms n-Space-developed portable version of Cold War-era shooter will ship alongside console, PC versions Nov. 9.

Activision is slowly but surely expanding the Call of Duty: Black Ops theater. In May, USA Today reported that the Treyarch-developed first-person shooter would arrive for the Wii, complementing previously announced versions for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Now, Activision has confirmed that a "companion" version of Black Ops is headed to Nintendo's DS as well, joining the other versions at retail on November 9.

Developed by n-Space (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized), Black Ops on the DS will feature many of the same connected gaming experiences that gamers can expect from the console and PC versions. Namely, the portable Black Ops will offer two-player co-op as well as online competitive action for up to six. Single-player missions will also be augmented by Arcade and Challenge modes.

According to today's announcement, the DS game's storyline will see players assuming the role of a CIA-backed operative. A time period was not specifically mentioned, though it will likely share that of the other versions, which take place during the Cold War. Treyarch has been stingy with story details thus far, but the console versions will apparently feature such loaded locales as Cuba and Vietnam.

    can u call it black ops if its not during the cold war and is not that similar to the console versions? probably not. the DS version should be different in things such as characters but setting, time period, what war, etc. should be the same

    @sydneyfcrules1 simple, controling issues. The PSP had some FPS, but none of them adapted well with its control scheme, plus it`s more expensive to make a game for the PSP and sadly its sales have not been that great on NA and Europe.

    I'm glad I bought that bendy thumb-stylus, so I can stumble through another Call of Duty for the DS (kidding). While these games do stand as a testament to the DS's ability to handle FPS games, it isn't saying much. Everything from graphics to controls are underwhelming, and not suited for the platform.

    I love my Call of Duty on 360 or PS3, and that's where they belong. I also love my unique DS games that aren't possible on these next gen consoles, and probably play my DS more than all combined. Final observation: Own every game system, since they all offer something that the other doesn't. Have the best of all worlds.

    @codymcclain13, do you really believe that? my view: FPS's are a travesty on consoles when compared with the precision of a mouse

  • Oozyrat

    Posted Jul 28, 2010 8:20 pm PT

    @cowmaster2k3
    @codymcclain13 - I actually don't really see a difference in playing a game on the pc or consoles XD. A games a game. No matter what the game is for, you still have to get used to the controls. For me, that's the only difference. I do however, have to say that the pc gamers have a slight advantage. This is that the mouse is more precise then the analog sticks because of the room and sizes. Also, pc has more buttons, but i do have to say the controller is more comfortable (but that's an opinion ).

    On the DS Black Ops, no matter what it's for, I'm not getting it.

    At least this isn't as strange as X-men Origins was. Rated M for PS3 and 360, rated T for Ps2 and PSP, and rated E 10+ for the DS.
