Guillermo del Toro collaborating with 'big' game company - Report

Pan's Labyrinth writer/director tells MTV News announcement is coming "soon enough;" likely not a Hobbit tie-in.

Iconic film mastermind Steven Spielberg, in conjunction with Electronic Arts, created the Boom Blox Wii puzzle game franchise in 2008. The original and its sequel won generally favorable reviews, but he's no longer the only man in Hollywood creating games.

Guillermo del Toro, writer and director of the 2006 Spanish fantasy film Pan's Labyrinth and 2004's Hellboy, told MTV News that he's currently working with a "big" company on more than one video game.

"One of the things we're announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company," del Toro told MTV. "We're going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting. It's not a development deal. We're going to do it. We're doing them. And we're going to announce it soon enough."

Regrettably, del Toro didn't provide any further details on his video game efforts and said only that were he to reveal more details, the aforementioned company "would probably shoot me in the head."

Del Toro is no longer attached to the upcoming Hobbit films but has previously noted his interest in creating games from that universe. Also in an interview with MTV News, del Toro said he'd like to create a "revolution" with a Hobbit game, but due to time constraints, it's not planned to launch alongside the first Hobbit film.

I couldn't believe he came from Mexico, a country that isn't traditionally known for movies. But the guy's a genius, and I know he's very detailed in his work, I know whatever he'll do will shine.

I've been a pretty big fan of Del Toro since the first time I saw Mimic. That movie had it's problems, and certainly tanked in terms of box office, but I remember seeing it and thinking it was great. Then he did Blade 2 and ever since I've looked forward to every project he's been involved with.

Seeing if he can translate that to a successful video game is definitely something I'm excited about finding out. He has a great vision for the type of atmosphere he wants his productions to have, and all of them have been interesting. After reading an article about his strong interest in fairy tales and how he likes to use them as inspiration for his movies, (specifically this was when Pan's Labyrinth came out) I can see how that type of approach would translate well into a video game. Hopefully something of the "adventure" variety.

    Maybe a new Alice game?

What if it's a tie in for At the Mountains of Madness? That'd be either really extraordinary or absolutely terrible.
There aren't enough Lovecraft games for them to be ruined by a movie game.

"Big" company?? It's only a guess, but I say he is talking about Microsoft. They sure got the money to hire anyone to make game for them.

Who cares? Just announce what game it is already. It's not like we're all going crazy with anticipation.

Guillermo del Toro has already demonstrated he can work beyond movies with his novel The Strain. I predict good things to come of this, though I am hoping it isn't a Hobbit game. Not that I don't want to see another Tolkien title, it's just that you can tell Guillermo works best when he's working from his own material.

Yeah Pan's Labyrinth was great, I wasn't to fond of Hellboy. I just recently watched the Orphanage which was also very good.

.... I wonder if having real directors and not game visionaries create game plots are a good thing. I think comic book writers are more up to par since they write stories that generally don't end. To much vision can steer development in a bad direction and leave a final product undone due to the fact that the Ideah may turn to stone to soon and there are not much room for a so called "reshoot" you have one chance to make it amazing. Or you will have a long unopen world of garbage.

del Toro is a fantastic director. If this game is even half as good as Pan's Labyrinth, I'm buying it.

Hellboy 2 was a lot better than the first, Pan's Labryinth really showed Del Toro's visionary directing and Blade 2 I absolutely adore, still remember the way Snowman stole the film!

Game wise this could only mean a good thing as long as he does it right.

My opinion of del Toro is pretty polarized. I adored Pan's Labyrinth, but could not enjoy Hellboy. I'll have to keep an eye out on this.

even if it was just something like Heavy Rain mixed with Cronos, I'm sure that with Del toro doing something you can expect it to be an ingrossing story with unique characters.

pan's labyrinth might make a good puzzle adventure, but it'd have to be a new story because i hate movie tie ins takes the excitement out of the game when you already know all of it.

This guy loves making visually stunning creatures and such, it'll be darn interesting to see what he does when 3D modeling is his main tool, not even sky is the limit. Pan's Labyrinth is a masterpiece, hopefully this game isn't a franchise but instead something completely new.

I am not much of a fan of his work for I think that both he and his films are overrated. Stil, maybe (just maybe) he will be more successful in the realm of videogames.

With all his creativity and abilities I know he could create his own universe for a videogame , as well as other multimedia projects for said "universe" .... Im a bit tired of all this hobbit and Lord of the Rings thing...... theres to many games from it already
