Oddworld set to be reinhabited

Just Add Water announces multiple projects set in the Oddworld universe for a variety of platforms.

Despite the fact that former developer Oddworld Inhabitants switched from making games to animated movies in 2005, it would seem that the beloved cult series will be making a comeback. A post appeared earlier today on the Web site of British developer Just Add Water and confirmed that Oddworld is working on bringing the franchise back.

Details were scarce, with the post detailing that the game has been in development for the past 12 months, starting off as the product of a meeting in June 2009. Just Add Water did say that it is planning "multiple projects, across multiple platforms." According to Just Add Water's Web site, the studio is a licensed developer for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Wii, and Xbox 360. The studio has been consulting with Oddworld Inhabitants about the project.

The post also linked to a new Twitter account for AbeMudokon, the protagonist from the first two games in the Oddworld franchise. So far, all of the tweets appear to be in character, with the poster responding in Abe's clipped speech pattern, as well as making reference to his frequent bowel movements.

The Oddworld series was first launched in 1997 and is best known for its juvenile sense of humour and platforming gameplay. Two games were released on the PlayStation, and in 2001, the franchise expanded to include Microsoft's Xbox console where it saw a further two titles released before the series went quiet.

YES ITS FINALLY GOING TO COME BACK DAM IT!

Its been years since i've played an Oddworld game with Abe in it...

I also heard from an interview with Lorren Lanning that they are also going to work on a PC port of Muches Oddysee. I never got to play that . Never had the original xbox. And the xbox emulators are just useless.

    Thanks OI.

Abe's Oddysee was brilliant if they realeased that on XBLA and PSN they'd end up making similar profits as when it came out

...and just when I thought the greatest game company would never be heard from again! (Hopefully JAD takes this seriously, to do less would be a disgrace!) This was by far my favorite games series, hands down. Has anyone heard about any movies that they put out? If so, any information would be appreciated!

I loved the first two, so I would love to see a next gen re-do or sequel much like the new Mortal Kombat. Update graphics/gameplay but keep the side scrolling, humor and quirkiness, and that would be a great game!

Great. The Oddworld frachise was one of the most interesting and immersive franchises in the Playstation era. I'm only hoping that they'll stick to the Quintology and stay away from the FPS market. Stranger's Wrath was good, but interrupted the pace of the Oddworld Quintology.

Hmm. I love Oddworld, and really hope this turns out to be good, but unless my Google skills need more work, J.A.W. is about as green as a developer can get. I only see one game, a PSN and portable title, under their belt. The site says that they are made up of different gamemakers who collectively have more than 40 titles under their belts... but not knowing what titles and how involved these people were... I'm not getting excited until I see some gameplay.

On the optimistic side, though: They've been working on it for almost a year and we're just hearing about it, so green or not, it looks like they're taking it seriously.

I wish they word patch Stranger's Wrath to play on the Xbox 360. I picked up the game and can't play it unless I pull out my old Xbox. I still like the OddWorld universe, even though I never beat any of those games. Should be interesting to see where they take the series.

this is good and bad news at the same time. Abe is back, but not by the original team. i'm just not counting on JAW's ability to pull this off. i'm afraid consulting with Oddworld Inhabitants is not gonna be enough.

i really do hope that they surprise me, but i have a bad feeling about this...
