Red Dead Redemption getting four DLC packs

Rockstar's open-world Western receiving a quartet of add-on packs beginning in August for Xbox Live, PlayStation Network; paid content to include new multiplayer maps, characters, undead, more.

Before Red Dead Redemption was released in May, Rockstar promised to support it with post-release add-on content. The publisher made good on that pact and released the free Outlaws to the End co-op mission pack for Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network in late June. However, the publisher won't just be giving content away for free.

The publisher today announced that four new downloadable content packs will mosey their way onto Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network beginning in August. The DLC includes the arrival of additional weapons; maps; animals; new saloon games, like Liars Dice; and playable characters from the game's predecessor, Red Dead Revolver.

In August, the Legends and Killers Pack (800 Microsoft points or $9.99) will be released. This heap of content brings nine fresh maps to the game's multiplayer competitive modes, eight new characters (from Red Dead Revolver) to saddle up as in multiplayer, a Tomahawk weapon, and trophies/achievements to collect.

The Liars and Cheats Pack (800 MS points, or $9.99) adds goods for the title's single- and multiplayer components. The content brings new multiplayer horse races with mounted combat, an Attack and Defend multiplayer mode, eight new multiplayer characters, and multiplayer versions of Liars Dice and Poker. The Liars and Cheats Pack also adds the explosive rifle, which can be used in both single- and multiplayer. The Liars and Cheats Pack has yet to be dated.

The Free Roam Pack, which bears neither a date nor a price, expands the game's already expansive Free Roam online component. The pack adds new Free Roam challenges, posse scoring/leaderboards, new "action areas" and "defensive placements," as well as what Rockstar is calling new "anti-griefing" measures.

The fourth and final pack Rockstar announced today is the Undead Nightmare Pack (800 MS points or $9.99). This content starkly differs from the others in that it is a ghoulish endeavor and a single-player test. The content brings an entirely new single-player adventure, with fresh challenges and quests. Additionally, it adds more animals to the game's biosphere, new "dynamic events," and eight new zombie characters for use in multiplayer. Rockstar promises additional details, including its release date, "soon."

    I am loving multiplayer now, and I foresee myself getting all of these DLCs. Red Dead Redemption is turning out to be a pricey game fully equipped!

    I loved the Outlaws to the End co-op pack, but would really prefer to see some more single player DLC in these new packs...

    So are they planning anything on the level of The Lost and Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony? I really want to spend more time in this world, but my Internet speed rules multiplayer out.

    I hope that the gambling games and dynamics are incorporated into Free Roam Mode, with some kind of limit on harming players while they're involved with the game. i'd like to see shopkeepers active too, maybe a fame system and a way to include bounties, bandanas and other objects.

    Fair enough, it looking like i'll have to buy the 'GTA IV Episodes' eventually -still waiting for a cost-down mind. Really enjoyed the first Red Dead on Xbox - hope to get RDR soon...don't think I can be bothered to wait around for a possible GOTY version.

    @digi-demon

    Ok, you have a valid point but I don't think they are releasing a GOTY edition for GTA IV since they released the "Episodes from Liberty City" expansions on one disc, unless Rockstar release a a couple of big expansions for RDR like they did for GTA 4 they could be making a GOTY edition with the DLC that will be released but if they do make expansions they'll probably put them on a other disc and release them separately to the game like they did with GTA.

    finally some single player dlc, so sick of online multiplayer getting all the attention

    I like when game devs come out with GOOD high quality DLC. I also like it when they don't put out "DLC" that only unlocks something that's already on the disc. That is infuriating. DLC like they did with GTA4 WORKS because it expands the concept of that game entirely and is obviously not just some on disc unlockable. But I do hate it when they release DLC RIGHT after a game is released...it always makes me wonder, what was the point of not putting these things on the game in the first place besides greed????

    As long as good DLC comes out and isn't stuff that should've been playable from the disc when I bought it then I'm glad to have it...if only they'd lower the DLC prices after so long....

    I like the sounds of these and the overall price on the currently announced ones aren't too bad. Hopefully the Free Roam Pack will be free because I can't see myself dishing out $40 for just DLC. But even if it is, RDR is a good quality game and I'm sure will be well worth the extra $$.

    I actually own every add-on for every game I own, 20+ ps3 games from Burnout Paradise to Fallout 3 to MGS4 to all CODs. This looks like one of the best dlc with the best price tag.

    @Amz1217
    OK, If that is the case, then what happened to GTA IV GOTY Edition then? No, IMO still reckon R* wont ever release a GOTY edition of either - just too much ca$h to be made - I mean, come on, GTA IV was made available on classic ages ago, but still no GOTY with all the DLC included...

    I smell a game of the year edition with all this extra content included.

    Does every game now-a-days have to have zombies in it?

  • Amz1217

    Posted Jul 11, 2010 6:04 am GMT

    @digi-demon

    Red Dead Redemption only came out in late May, it's far too early for a GOTY edition of it, the Fallout 3 GOTY came out a full year after the game itself did and that was after Bethesda announced they would stop releasing content for it but with time (probably a few months) Rockstar may announce a GOTY edition.

    There is no way i am paying for any of this. I am going to trade it in soon anyway, it is quite boring now.

  • digi-demon

    Posted Jul 10, 2010 3:18 pm GMT

    Why no GOTY editions of R* games?...I bought all the Fallout 3 downloads and they were well worth the money - but they were made available a short while later in the GOTY for less $$. So why no GOTY editions of R* games?...I'll tell you.... $uckers will buy any old DLC or should I say their parents will. FGS buy DL games and proper expansions, but dont just buy any old DLC crap or we will end up with a 100% daily pay for play system.

    Looks expensive, the undead pack sound sthe most promising with it being a single player add-on the rest i'll just skip.
    Hope R* intend to do add-ons like they did for GTA4 with LATD & BOGT.
    Seems wasted effort trying to bolster a rather lacklusture MP experience when the SP portion of the game is clearly the best part.

    @ Flint247 To some degrees you are right, but in all fairness, as much as we love our hobby, gaming is a buisness, and yes to be honest all DLC is for money. All of it no matter how good it is or it is not, it is about making money. Granted some DLC is done right(i.e The GTA Episodes, the Fallout 3 episodes, Oblivion Shivering Isles,), and then there are those that are not done right(i.e Godfather cheats, horse armor, etc etc). And what is worth some ones dollar is also subjective. Some may not consider say Halo or Call of Duty worth money due to their short campaigns, worth it, but some may since they may enjoy both the Campaign and the MP component. If I feel a game is not worth full price, I wait for it to drop inprice which it will happen. As for a game having alot of DLC and should have left, that of course is subjective. You have to determine if the DLC is good and if the game is short.

    @TheTrueMagusX1

    I agree that this game is worth the money, but most games nowadays are selling DLC just for the money. I was mainly speaking in general and not criticizing this game. (I will be more specific next time in my postings)

    I still believe that games should sell less if they have a lot of DLC in store, unless the actual game is worth the full price.

    Pass, not getting my green backs for this...

  • TheTrueMagusX1

    Posted Jul 9, 2010 2:47 pm GMT

    @Flint247 I disagree with you. Red Dead Redemption imo is game that is just packed brimmed with content as it is. With Both a lengthy single player game and a good MP component, the game was well worth my 60 dollars. It reminds of a game like Oblivion that its price was already justified, but its extra content added a great wealth to it(Aside from the silly horse armor, which was a rip) but aside from that games like this to me are worth 60 dollars. Heck with out the multiplayer component the game was still worth the sixty bucks! My thing is if you donot like the extra content, donot buy it simple as that...and compared to say other content packs(IMO The MW2 stimulus pack which was a rip) these are quite meaty additions at the same price that some of those other packs are but have alot less stuff in it.

    This game is so sick, I got the special edition one from the pre-order with the deadly assassin outfit. The game is worth keeping forever. A sweet story, nice action, a sexy multi-player, and co-op online. Now they are giving us 4 DLC's!!! YEA THIS GAME IS GOING NOW AS LONG AS I LIVE! So get the game, its worth your money, and enjoy. (All games can learn something from this game, story and game play wise I think)
