Metal Gear Solid 5 might be Kojima's 'next project'

Famed Konami designer says he has no option but to make sequel to top-rated action adventure or original game; Zone of the Enders follow-up "pushed into future."

In April, Kojima Productions head and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima teased through his Japanese-language Twitter feed that his "next project will challenge a certain type of taboo." Unfortunately, Kojima has been less than forthcoming with more details about this mysterious work.

This week, though, Kojima sat down with Hirokazu Hamamura, CEO of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, and offered a host of cryptic comments concerning one, or more, of the designer's upcoming projects. As relayed by Andria Sang, Kojima began by talking up his "next project," saying that details have been largely firmed up, though "recently, it has wavered a bit."

Kojima told Hamamura that after returning from the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, he experienced a change of heart. "I'm not sure myself, but I began to want to do something different from what I'd wanted to do originally," he said.

Delving deeper into the specific nature of this project, Kojima said that the game will either be entirely new or Metal Gear Solid 5. "For the next game I make, it's either MGS5 or an original game. I only have these two choices," he said. His indecision notwithstanding, Kojima noted that the game's engine is already up and running, and that he has allocated his key personnel to the project.

It seems clear that the game will not be a new installment in the Zone of the Enders franchise, a speculated frontrunner following interest expressed by Kojima in October. "Regarding [Zone of the Enders] and so-forth, sorry--those will be pushed a bit into the future. I'm 47 this year, and I don't know when something might happen."

As for when the game would release and on which platforms, Kojima said, "It can't take three years," calling out the accelerated pace of game development in the West. He went on to say that the game is being created for unspecified consoles.

    MGS4 finally perfected character control, but it lost the stealth-based gameplay that fans of the series love. Too many chases: on top of Drebin's vehicle, on the back of Big Mama's bike, escaping on Rex... I mean can a brother get some stealth action up in this b?

    I would like to see Metal Gear or Metal Gear Solid remade with MGS4's engine and player movement. I'd like to see a return to OSP of items and weapons; which rewards exploring the level. Eliminate the concept of the gun market as represented by Drebin in MGS4.

    OR, a stealth based game similar to thief with MGS4 character control... although im not sure how the sword mechanics would work... but looks like they could do something nice with what i've seen of rising (despite not wanting to play that title)

    metal gear is and always will be one of the greatest games ever.it wont be the same without snake but having raiden as a playable character slicing bad guys to pieces cloaking device ninja fighting skillz ohhhh boy if i txt antmore im gonna cum lol

    What I'd love to see is a return to "Tactical, Stealth Espionage" meaning less emphasis on "run n gun" and more emphasis on the stealth we have all come to love from the venerable series the MGS games have been synonymous with. Also, how about more PMC's and less Cherubs and Gekkos. And if Trouser Snake is going to kick any bucket, make him go out with a bang and not because of a ...virus ? The man has withstood nuclear holocausts , accelerated aging, lack of a breeding capability, malignant sarcoma via chain smoking, FoxDie, and the Patriots exploitation. All so a virus can do what none of these have tried ? Time to bring T.Snake back to the essentials of stealth, subterfuge, and subversion oriented gameplay.

    They need to get away from the sci-fi FoxDie crap, stay away from the digital Patiots, it needs to be a soldier's story once again.

    As interesting as the Philanthropy Chronicles could be (the story that would inevitably be between MGS 1 and MGS 2) - a better story, and more fitting would be a bridge between Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear 1 for the Famicon/Nintendo.
    Just call it "Metal Gear" Open it up with Big Boss doing some operations in the Hondorus or Costa Rica, somewhere in South America, for the first chapter, make you think that you're going to be playing Big Boss throughout the game... and then, in an MGS2 twist, change the main character, but unlike the dismay of MGS2, celebrate the true completion of the series by making it Solid Snake sneaking onto the Big Shell-like Outer Heaven which you created in Peace Walker as Big Boss.
    The story could be epic, a true father-son scenario, and switch between Big Boss's story and Solid Snake's. Big Boss wrestling with the knowledge of some elite intruder, and Solid Snake meeting up with Gray Fox as well as everything else that either happened in the original or speculated throughout the series.
    Hideo wanted MGS4 to be his final masterpiece, but in my opinion, he fell short. Get rid of the Drebin system, get rid of the guns-up approach that plagued 4 and the month long story sequences, and find a good balance between the story telling of MGS, the gameplay of Peace Walker (and CQC system,) the graphics of MGS4, and the history of the series. His last major push should be the one that brought him to become a staple to begin with.

    Give us Metal Gear.

    MGS5 gameplay should be the same mechanics but a huge map to be in, which would create great stealth play in some parts but in more urban environments have more action with cqc.

    Totally agree, the story cannot continue with snake absoutley exhausted especially all the stuff he did in 4, If they were to make story between 1 and 2 would be great. However it has to be Snake as the main character or else it really isn't the same...

    The only way I will like to play as Snake again, is if MGS5 will take place between MGS1 and MGS2. (or after 2) I cant see how the story can continue with an old exhausted Snake.

    Mango@ Kojima was pretty clear that he dont want microsoft to mess or even mention the name SNAKE or putting him in the 360 console...so i doubt the next MGS will be with snake since it became a multiplatform

    Honestly, I cannot wait to see another MGS, though I only beat around 2/3's of MGS4 which is crazy. I made it to around the mission where snake is in plain clothes, and you dodge lights etc... i just moved on to the newest game like i always do and never get back to the old. I really want to get back to that game soon, I've heard nothing but good for the ending, and I enjoyed the story up to what I played, its gonna be great.

    The ending to Snakes's story was beautiful. Even though I would love to see another game with Snake it would ruin the story and drag it out. All we can do is wait and hope the game will be Epic. They have big shoes to fill espicially after MGS4

    mgs has turned more to humor then a serieus action story he got old instead of stronger and staying young it is great to see snake but whatabout characters like mantis ninja grey fox sniperwolf like characters i think mgs3 was the only good story gameplay follower to mgs1 i dont think 2 and 4 are that good snake we are waiting for suprises and a amazing story like the first and thirt part good luck hideo just dont mess with the character use the snake of part 1 he looked superieur i hope you bring back that style

    Even though I would LOVE Snake in another Espionage adventure, I'm worried about the story. We've pretty much covered anything there is to know about Solid Snake and we already know about Big Boss' background and how he became to build Outer Heaven. So what are they going to do with the story of MGS5? If they're going to use Raiden, I'm just going to shoot myself in the head!

    Yep i agree, if he is going to make MGS5, it will have snake as main character in it and it will be the same old good MGS and nothing different. Also I saw another interview where they said that Rising is not same old MGS, it has been tweaked to a different kind of audience and is no way like the original MGS. Lets see what happens when that game comes out.

    i dont think its Multi platform i think only for PS3 he made microsoft Helarious when in Rising trailer the presenter said ... snake with new Metal gear on XboX ,Hideo Kojima said Not snake but Raiden Hideo Kojima didnt Port Snake to Xbox360 and im sure Metal gear solid rising aint the Sequel of MGS

    i wish for at least one more MGS game with solid snake. If i were to recommend a MGS sequel, i would recommend making a game about the story and legacy of "The Boss" Aka "The Joy" from MGS3 Snake eater.

    @matthewryder I want another game with Solid Snake too. A remake of Metal Gear 1 and 2 still hasn't been done...imagine those 2d games in 3d! The possibilities for Metal Gear series is endless.

    @major_zero25 Thanks man, I got very confused while trying to type the message in order to have it as a clear reading. The mistake I made was the place where I put MGS3, because, if you notice, I then wrote "MGS Portable, prequel to Metal Gear..." IT's just that I forgot to mention Peace Waker... but you know I was just giving an example.

    @jorgeChC metal gear solid 3 was before Metal gear 1 it dosint fill a gap. the order by story gose like this: MGS 3, MGS: PO, MGS PW. MG, MG2: SS, MGS, MGS2, MGS: R, MGS4.

    I assume the MGS 5 will be a prequel. After Metal Gear Solid 2, The MGS series turned out to go from past to present: Metal Gear Solid 2 was present, MGS 3 filled the gap between Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid. Then MGS 4 was present, MGS Portable, prequel to Metal Gear... and so on. Now Metal Gear Solid Rising, the gap between MGS2 and 4. Or maybe, since Peace walker was supposed to be MGS 5, we might see something new. But something between MGS 1 and 2 would be nice.

    I want snake back, his accelerated aging gets reversed. Get new characters, i don't know perhaps you could have something like: there were more than just 3 clones of big boss, return of the patriots, anything but its too soon to end solid snake. I know they killed Big boss off in mgs4 but thats okay because he was like 70 and theres still plenty of space for mgs prequels, peace walker was 1974 and metal gear was 1995 but i want another game with solid snake.

    FoxDie will manipulate Snake's genetic structure in order for the host not to die (FoxDie dies if Snake dies) giving him a much younger age. It targets individuals with a specific genetic code and it suffered a mutation in MGS4 didn't it? Well that's what I'd go for if I was working on the game. Snake doomed to fight until someone kills him...or he kills himself. Moral of the story? Don't f**k with genetics.

    i like the idea of mgs 5 and it could go anywhere... its kojima. mgs is kinda like a sci fi movie and any number of things could happen like after the old fox die getts taken out rapid aging reverses and he is left close to his actual age. i mean im sure ppl are going to come up with many twist and im sure once again its going to be nothing anyone expected but everyone loves

    I simply wish he'd remake the original Metal Gear and follow it up with the second Metal Gear. It would be easier for people to understand/experience the gap between Metal Gearl Solid: Snake Eater and Metal Gear: Twin Snakes. People would DEFINITELY shell out the money for those games. Most of us do not want the MGS series to come to an end. No Sake = no Metal Gear.

    i can careless which rout he take because i'm sure whichever path he takes will be a masterpiece. i just hope it comes to PS3 or PSP. ^_^ $ony needs to do whatever it takes to make sure this game comes to PS3 or PSP... preferably exclusive, but i'm content as long as i can play it on PS3. ^_^ played every Metal Gear game... i just hope i can continue to do so with this installment. =/

    DUDE!! I dont't think Snake's story is done... I am a big Metal Gear player and fan It really would be great.... snake story was an ending one... but their is always room for a new beginning ......... hopefully with snake but whatever Hideo Kojima comes up with I am sure it will be amazing!!! He is a genius...

    ... its going to be raiden's (ninja) adventure after the events of mgs4 or liquids (absorb abilities) before the mgs4 events...
