Hulu Plus hitting PS3 'soon,' 360 early 2011

On-demand TV show streaming service introduces $10 subscription package; iPhone, iPad version out now, coming to Sony's console as early as July.

Reports have been circulating since the beginning of June that on-demand TV show streaming service Hulu would be the latest multimedia addition to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Today, Hulu made it official. Along with formally unveiling its $10-a-month premium service, the company confirmed that Hulu would be available through Sony's and Microsoft's console.

Hulu Plus is expected to debut on gaming consoles with the PlayStation 3. Though officially bearing a "coming soon" release window, a promotional video for Hulu Plus indicates that the service will be available on Sony's console in July. For Sony's part, the publisher would only verify the "coming soon" window. Xbox 360 gamers are expected to gain access to Hulu in early 2011. iPhone and iPad users who subscribe to Hulu Plus gain access to the service today.

Hulu did not indicate whether the free version of its on-demand content would be offered to console owners, and the company had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

As previously indicated, Hulu Plus is not a replacement for the TV show streaming content already available through Web browsers. Subscribers will gain access to full seasons of TV shows currently available through the service, instead of just the five most current episodes. Hulu Plus will also let subscribers access a range of TV shows, including The X-Files, Arrested Development, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Saturday Night Live.

Hulu is currently offering subscription plans to its premium service in limited quantities, and interested parties can apply for an invitation through the company's Web site.

Nice which site? It will be one of two things, either illegal or the owner is rich and is paying alot of money to cover the royaltys for the shows?

I don't want this, Why would you wanna go pay for something when you can get it for free through torrent downloads.

Actually, there are websites that carry the most recent episodes of all the shows I watch. They have zero commercials/ads.

    @BulletsnOctane

I like your way of thinking, but goodluck finding anywhere thats ad free nowerdays! If someones watching, someone else will want to "advertise" something.

Here in uk "basic" tv is either FREE and has ads, or BBC which has NO ads, but we have to pay a yearly Tv licence for that pleasure (the bad part of bbc's ad freeness, is we dont have a choice in the matter, and if we so much as own a laptop/pc or tv, broken or not, we MUST pay a tv licence by LAW lol!!)

Becuase of that situation i would actually rather bbc payed the bills via ads instead of my pocket lol! i can choose not to buy everything i see in the ad break.

If Hulu still show ads even on the paid version, then they are definitely ripoff merchants!

@Trogeton I see you have a dragon ball z character for your avatar. Hulu does offer lots of free anime. Entire series run in both dubbed and subtitled. That's one of the main reason I use it. Plus I like some of the British shows available.

I can't see myself paying $120 a year so I can watch old tv shows past seasons. I can rent for netlfix for less than that and the current PSN+ is only $50. Hulu is charging way too much. Now if there is a discount for subscribing to both I might consider it.

Well, DUH. Cable costs money, too. Do you not pay for it or satellite? Or any kind of TV.

I merely suggest that it may be possible to use it as a potentially cheaper alternative.

it better be free, i am not going to spend more than 50$ yearly for PSN +

@Ravenlore_basic Dude I wish cable was $40 a month near me. I would have to pay $99 for Internet + Cable, and that is just the promotion for basic service for 6 months. Cable is a rip off as it is. they need to lover the price I work for a freaking cable company and I know it is an over priced rip off. You pay for TV and have to pay for commercials does that make any sense???

I'm not getting this unless it's included in PlayStation Plus. I don't want to pay for 2 different services on the same system...

I like seeing MajorNelson responses. You tell them Nelson! Some people are either too critical or they're so conclusive. Good to have some backup. Pertaining to the article, I'm not a big TV watcher, so I probably won't suscribe to HULU, but I do like the ESPN deal for XBOXLIVE.

  • AncientDozer

    Posted Jun 30, 2010 9:29 am GMT

    @Waldkrieger

With the way they're trying to go about it, you could probably cancel cable and stick with Live or PSN.

I mean, with live. . . there's Netflix and Zune. Then Hulu.

Sorry Microsoft, but if Hulu is only available to Gold members (which, by the statement above, we can all assume that it will be) then I'm not going to be using the service on your device. That is... unless you do something with Xbox Live before then. Even then, if it's as bad as Netflix on Xbox 360 then I'd rather just hook up the PC and watch.

Hopefully Sony pushes this out to Playstations without a disc. While they're at it, they should finally get around to including the Netflix application in the XMB too.

I'm not too happy about this Hulu plus thing, but it's still not the worst deal around.

Old free Hulu > Hulu Plus > Cable/Satellite

I suppose with Hulu plus, you're not winning, but you're sure as hell not losing.

This would be a waste of money for me. As long as I can watch current episodes of Naruto and a couple other Animes, I could care less. If they start charging for that stuff I'll find another site.

There is just too much content on Cable and from shows, though many Channles are letting people access from their own site. IF this continues then there will truly be no need to pay for cable. I hope it happens, as $10.00+ $8.00 is less than $40.00 a month

Sony PLEASE hold out on any shows or Movies you have and do not allow on Hulu unless they give you a deal for $5.00 dollars for Plus members or $10.00 for non plus members. . _ , _ ., _ > > > > _ _ >>> Also if this goes through try to get Normal Hulu for PSN+ members. Hulu worked before and Hulu is the one that made it so it did not work on PS3. They can make it so Hulu works again. _ . . , _ . . . _ , . , _ .,. _ > _ >>> If not then come up with your own less expensive TV and Movie network with commercials Click advertising, side advertising... or with out for more money. The content from PSN is just too expensive to compete. It should be more like Itunes with everything there IF you want to compete.

Microsoft promises that this won't be a straight port. Instead, "Hulu Plus on Xbox 360 will take advantage of the social connectivity possible with our 25 million member Xbox Live community as well as the magic of Kinect for Xbox 360." So we'll break it down for you: While PS3 owners can enjoy Hulu Plus as early as next month, Xbox owners will have to wait until "early 2011" to get "controller-free navigation" with Kinect and Xbox Live Party support, so your Xbox Live friends can refuse your invitations to watch Quantum Leap together.

Like ESPN, Hulu Plus on Xbox 360 will take advantage of the social connectivity possible with our 25 million member Xbox LIVE community as well as the magic of Kinect for Xbox 360. We are committed to delivering signature features to the Hulu Plus experience on Xbox 360, like controller-free navigation with Kinect and Xbox LIVE Parties so you can watch with friends no matter where they are. These are custom entertainment experiences for Xbox 360 that you can't find anywhere else. More details will be announced at a later time.

Cool... if I didn't have to pay $10 a month, they have netflix and lots of other things, just not worth $10. I could see $5 or maybe make it free with PSN+.

  • willauqs

    Posted Jun 29, 2010 8:03 pm GMT

wow! why does everyone think this could be "free" for PSN+ members?? let's do the math. PSN+ is $50 a year. Hulu+ will be ($10 x 12 months) $120 a year! you're not going to get the option to pay $120 for a year of hulu OR pay less than half that price for that same hulu AND all the exclusive PSN+ content. you've got a better chance of psn+ being free for hulu subscribers from a financial perspective. but thats not going to happen either.

paying for Hulu better mean that I can access any show from any season. If it's the same as the old 3 episodes that cycle in and out then no thanks. Now 10$ a month to watch any show any time from any season would definitly be worth it...especially since they have It's always sunny in Philadelphia!! That and a netflix subscription would cancel any need for cable.
