Metal Gear Solid: Rising series planned

Producer tells Japanese magazine that Kojima Productions' latest is not a "side story" in the MGS universe; plans for at least two games featuring Raiden.

When Hideo Kojima unveiled the latest trailer (below) for Konami's highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid: Rising during this year's E3, many were left hungry for more. Besides a few sparse details about the game's "zan-datsu" principle (meaning "cut and take") and a brief outline of its gameplay mechanics, Konami revealed little else.

Now, a bit more information regarding the game has trickled out, courtesy of Metal Gear Solid: Rising producer Shigenobu Matsuyama. As related by Andria Sang, the producer told Japanese media publisher Enterbrain's Midnight Live 360 Web broadcast that the intention is to make more than one game featuring the cyborg ninja Raiden.

"MGS Rising is not a side story. We're aiming for two Metal Gear Solids, making a series out of another standard," Matsuyama said last week.

Matsuyama was also asked why Raiden was chosen as the protagonist in the new title. He replied that Raiden's blade made him the perfect hero for a game where players could slice anything they wanted.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising is due for release later this year on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

    lol yet another game thats got me so hyped that every game i play has become extremely boring, hope it comes out this year otherwise i'll die of boredom just for waiting grr

    ... i guess the important thing is that it'll be on the PS3 as well as 360, but it still won't feel the same to me knowing that it's multi-platform. =/ here's hoping for this MGS to be EPIC as well. ^_^

    2 things im worried about here.. 1. I hope there is still a great story and characters that capture that trademark metal gear solid feel and aura and this isn't all a bunch of action aimed at FPS fans. 2. Kojima himself isn't doing this game, which really scares me.

    Now while all you PS3 and Xbox fanboys keep arguing about which console is better, i'll be playing this on my PC with superior graphics and control.

    It's pretty cool how Raiden went from veritable douche in MGS2 to awesome, psycho badass in MGS4. Also curious to see if/how they connect Raiden to that Russian Officer character in MGS3 (not Ocelot...they guy Snake disguises himself as briefly).

    I have to say im a fan of how MGS is getting "spiced up" by changing the game mechanics since they are going in a new direction with a new lead character.. game is gonna ROCK!

    Raiden looks very "dazzling" in this series - MGS Rising!! he's looks cooler than Snake. he also doing a very good debut as cameo on MGS4!!

    idc about this not having snake in it as long as its being made by the same maker because he is a genius. I loved the series MGS on ps1 was the first game i ever played and it was amazing when i heard MGS 2 was coming out i bought it right away when i played it i was pissed that i wasn't snake but after i beat the game Raiden was cool as hell. MGS 4 was amazing awesome story.

    I cant wait to see how this game turns out it looks awesome almost like Ninja Gaiden (hopen for a 3rd!) I will def buy this if it has sum sort of multiplayer idc wat only because i believe multiplayer allows players to play the game longer than normally.Hopen for some story on wat happened to snake.

    lol so funny to read comments of people dissing the game when its not even out yet....

    I would understand it if people have experianced personally the game and then diss it...but hell nothing is complelty certain yet. Give the game a chance....

    ps. Raiden is fine imo. MGS2 was a great game with a great story. Really want to learn how he transformed so at least interested in the game story wise. hehe

    After watching the video on Xbox Live, the whole decide where you want to slice them up thing is pretty darn cool! Looks pretty impressive, for a MGS game anyways.

    fans that are complaining, where's snake!? yo get with it, they released MGS4 almost 2 years ago they wouldn't even think to release another snake game anytime soon even if they were considering it. I love MGS and have liked every single one, and I think Rising is a very interesting way of putting a lot more action to the series since i saw grayfox in the original i always imagined a game where you would cut suckers up however you want and this is exactly that, So if Kojima is making it then that's fine by me.

    i don't really care that raiden is the main character, i just hope this game still takes itself seriously as part of the series. when you say something as definite as "it's not a spin off" you have to deliver, and not produce a hack and slash joke.

    I know a lot of people are complaining about Raiden being the new main character and want Snake to come back, but his story is basically done. In fact, doing another MGS on Snake would be milking it, not Raiden. The only way to continue the classic MGS would be to introduce a new character, someone who doesn't go around slicing people in half.

    How is Rising a lot better?? Its a spinoff of Metal Gear Solid. Yea Im a huge of the Metal Gear series, but I do feel Rising is a spinoff and is just going to attract retarded gamers that can't understand a story-filled game like Metal Gear Solid.

    people dont get confused.....

    Solid was introduced in MGS1 along with Ocelot and Liquid . Ocelots body is taken over by Liquid
    Raiden was the main character in MGS2 although Solid had a bit to do. Solidus is introduced.
    In MGS3 Solid is nowhere to be found. This time were introduced to Naked who becomes Big Boss. Whose cloned cells produce , Solid , Liquid , and Solidus? is that right? hehe
    And Big Boss get the smackdown from Solid in an old snes game?
    In MGS4 Solid and Naked Big Boss have a chat...

    I still don't understand why people hated Raiden in MGS2. I thought he was a great new addition to the series storyline. I think people's opinions somewhat changed when he went to his ninja style in MGS4, which we will see begin in Rising. This will be a great new series that I am definitely looking forward to.

    i like metal gear but they could have done something with big boss before metal gear 3 or after. or an operation that involved foxhound while snake was in it. heck they could have remade the ones for Nintendo. i just really think sword against guns is a losing battle

    'lightning bolt action' doesnt necessarily mean lightning fast gameplay. to me its merely a reference to the characters name Raiden (god of thunder). its just one of those little kojima touches that don't have to make sense but make fans of the series smile. ninja gaiden kicks ass yeah, but this looks like its gonna definitely bring something new to ninja type games. game of the year contender for sure.
