DeathSpank swatting 360, PS3 week of July 13

EA flips the switch on Hothead Games and Ron Gilbert's new action role-playing game for Xbox 360, PS3 next month; $15 price point also confirmed.

Ron Gilbert and Hothead Games' DeathSpank has been finished for months, but only today received a release date. Electronic Arts today announced that it will publish the downloadable action role-playing game for the PlayStation 3 on July 13, with the Xbox 360 edition hitting the following day. Once launched, DeathSpank will sell for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points).

Though initially announced as an episodic game a la Hothead's Penny Arcade Adventures, DeathSpank evolved into a full downloadable game for Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Along with its adventure-game-style storyline and puzzles, the title features a strong action RPG element, where gamers cut their way through swaths of enemies to gain items and level up. There's also a local cooperative mode, in which one player controls DeathSpank and the other takes care of his sidekick, Sparkles the Wizard.

DeathSpank is the first Ron Gilbert project since the Secret of Monkey Island creator became Hothead Studios' creative director early in 2008. However, it's also his last with the studio. He announced his departure when the game's development wrapped in April. Prior to his stint as creative director, Gilbert was brought in to Hothead as a collaborator on Penny Arcade Adventures.

    Offline co-op and $15. I'm sold, and initially I wasn't so sure. I think this will give me some great laughs for the summer! Can't wait!

    Been psyched for this for a very long time, but only know really REALLY want it. Gotta love Gilbert coming back like this. It's like old times.

    This is the game I want to play. I mean REALLY want to play. I want this game more than any other game in 2010. I mean if RAGE was coming out this year it'd be another story.

    He was saying that it WILL pop up. They've practically confirmed it with the "REDACTED" version and said they want it in as many gamers hands as possible. Which means, they'll probably wait a month check the sales then port it. OR they're porting it now.

    I don't understand why people don't find this game amusing??
    It's from Ron Gilbert! It's got the same humor as the old Secrets of Monkey Island! It'll sure bring along some laughs, and some time killing gameplay!
    And for the fact, that there's over 100's of weapons and armors in an arcade game.. Well that just adds some depth!

    I have been dying to play this game!

    The games name is a bad choice, it sounds closer to a bad porn. The game itself looks bad as well. I'd rather be kicked in the.....jewels instead of playing this, at least that is survivable.....

    Why cancel the PC Release? WHY??? Especially you, Hothead. This is clearly a foremost pc title. Gaming is devoluting to peculiar and ominous days... Thank god for Diablo 3 and Titan Quest 2.

    Really glad it's not episodic anymore. I really cant stand episodic games. 99% of the time, I finish episode one and dont feel like throwing down another wad of cash just to continue the story.
