Ubisoft teases Egyptian Assassin's Creed project

Publisher posts image showing a new take on its open-world action franchise tied to efforts to expand its brands beyond games.

The premise of Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series of games--that a modern-day man using an "animus" machine can relive his ancestors' experiences--allows the publisher the freedom to explore any number of historical eras with its stories. The franchise has already tackled the Holy Land during the Crusades and Renaissance Italy, but now it is heading--in some form--to Egypt.

The publisher has posted a picture on its Ubisoft Workshop site showing what appears to be an assassin from its famed franchise standing in front of two pyramids. The image contains several nods to the series, including an emblem bearing the initials "AC" on it and a protagonist dressed up in an Egyptian variant of the standard assassin's garb, including a white head covering and a concealed--and blood-soaked--knife protruding from the character's right sleeve.

Beyond the image, the Ubisoft Workshop site links to the UbiWorkshop Twitter account, which says only that the teased image has nothing to do with the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. The UbiWorkshop account is following only a handful of people, including two comic book artists that are working on a separate project for Ubisoft, three people working on the publisher's trans-media efforts, and Mathieu Ferland, producer for the Splinter Cell series.

Ubisoft has actively tried to extend its various franchises beyond the realm of games in recent years, an effort leading to the just-released feature film adaptation of Prince of Persia and the various licensing tie-ins. Additionally, Assassin's Creed, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, H.A.W.X., and End War have all spawned novelizations.

The company's trans-media effort kicked into a higher gear in 2008, when Ubisoft purchased 300 effects house Hybride Technologies to collaborate with its game makers on new projects. The first product of that union was Assassin's Creed: Lineage, an episodic series of short films created to promote Assassin's Creed II (the full film was also aired on Spike TV around the game's launch). The next project will be a short film based on Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, with Oscar-winning directors Francois Alaux and Herve de Crecy helming the 30-minute spot.

    Places they should go to in AC:
    1. Ancient Greece
    2. Russia
    3. China
    4. Mars

    After a bit of digging, I found out that this teaser is part of an Assassin's Creed Art Book. Check out ubiworkshop.com. Another artist has submitted his ancient China-period Assassin there. So yeah, it's not a game anyone. Artbook.

    I love it. I love it. I love it!

    Would love to see them bring it to Egypt. I've been hoping that they would for so long. So much mystery there.

    And I would love to see a darker skinned protagonist, it's something rarely seen in major games.

    I'd love to be an assassin in Europe. There'll be tons of tombs and other fun places to visit.

    I wouldn't know how they could make a game after the era that started using automatic firearms, you saw in AC2 that they use some sort of nightsticks(i don't know its name) but really try to use your hidden blade or a sword against a M-16, i'm still looking forward to see how they figure it out with AC3 and how desmond will fight that.

    I dont want Egypt in the AC3. Keep the plot in Europe. Make Egypt DLC for AC3 instead.

    it could be possible that egypt will be just one of many time periods that will be available in ac3. I mean, their goal is to find all of the pieces of eden around the world, so there could be many ancestors and many time periods. (just my guess).

    @cowboywill27: OPM said that, but it's incorrect. Ezio is 41 in the year 1500.

    SO today i read that Rome is 4 times the size of venice in AC2. if this is true then they wont need any other towns cuz Venice was fckn huge. I also read in playstation magazine, that Ezio is 45

    @Solidsnake13_2:

    I agree, but I am keeping my hopes up with them, AC2, in my opinion was a dramatic improvement over AC1. Although I don't expect the same level of improvement over AC2, I at least have confidence that they will 'keep it good'.

    could the next assassin's creed take place in Egypt!! that would be just great because pharaoh also have such an amazing history and lots of secrets but this gonna be way back i mean WAAAAY back in history, even before the events of assassin's creed 1, but i don't know if there's gonna be cities because in that time there were no huge cities only villages and small cities i think so is the pyramids going to be the main focus of the developers and most of the playing will be inside them? i can't assume anything but whatever the place and the time the game will take place in it's gonna amaze!

    Listen, I told you---it comes off prejudice. You can call it a simple opinion, and defend it with your "evidence," but the reality is: Your opinion is a prejudice opinion. You can't verify a statement like "not everything (including games) needs americans involved." It's a completely bias and unfounded statement. ESPECIALLY if you say you've played videogames with Americans in it; that's seriously the strangest attempt at providing objective evidence I've ever heard. As if the nationality of the person you are controlling in a game has ANY impact on game mechanics whatsoever. The statement is solely the misguided opinion of someone that holds a prejudice. It would have been NO different had someone else said "not everything (including games) needs Canadians involved."

    They would have been guilty of an equally invalid and prejudice opinion.

    Also, you have tried to defend your position several times. There's nowhere to go from here. ALL I ever addressed was your statement. I wouldn't have said anything at all if I didn't give you the benefit of the doubt in being able to open your mind a little and consider what you said, but now that I recognize that's going to be pretty difficult--all I can say is: If you don't like to hear other people's opinions about some garbage you let fall out of your mouth (your opinion, as you prefer to call it), maybe you should unplug from the internet.

  • metalkid9

    Posted Jun 11, 2010 11:02 am GMT

    @ PrimeLazarus, And also I could care less what someone else on the internet thinks of me. It's was simply an opinion and you chose to continue this conversation on and on. You need to let it go and move on with your life. I'm not gonna waste any more time explaining anything to you. If you wanna call me "ignorant", "silly" or "prejudice" or even all of them at the same time feel free to do so my friend after all you're just a random guy over the internet who knows nothing about me.

  • metalkid9

    Posted Jun 11, 2010 11:01 am GMT

    @PrimeLazarus, I said:
    "not everything (including games) needs americans involved."

    Definition of prejudice: an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. I'm not gonna explain myself anymore so I'm just gonna let you decide if what I said was prejudice or not. And remember I've played lots of games in which Americans were in it as a lot of people have so I'm not speaking without knowledge. If you don't believe me you can go to my profile(which you have already) again and look at the games that I've played. If you need more proof you can go to my xbox profile and look at my achievements that I have from the games in which americans were involved. I shouldn't have even replied to this because it's been long done and over with but after a week you decided to reply to me which makes no sense because all our comments were already deleted except the one I posted. No one in this site knows anything about my life or who I am so no one should even think about judging me. You know what, if you think I'm prejudice that's fine, I give up. I gave you enough proof. If you still believe that I'm prejudice then that's fine because in the end it's not gonna change my opinion about have the game in a french revolution setting.

  • PrimeLazarus

    Posted Jun 11, 2010 10:01 am GMT

    @metalkid9

    You can have an opinion on this site or any other, but that doesn't mean it's not ignorant or silly.

    Saying that you don't think anything is better with Americans involved is a PREJUDICE statement. It's not based on facts or truth, it's your perception. You can have an opinion, but I'm telling you---there is a big difference between a grounded and reasonable opinion---and a completely bogus, ignorant one.

    I told you, I think that the American Revolution and the French Revolution are both equally interesting settings for AC. I don't prefer one over the other since both happened relatively close in time to each other. You might prefer the French Revolution solely because it lacks Americans, and that's fine---but you need to understand, your statement and attitude about Americans is very clearly, prejudice.

    It would be EXACTLY the same had I said the same you did, but about Canadians. It's just false and it's spoken from a spiteful, ignorant stance.

    Why is Assassins Creed so great. But I just hope they don't try to milk out the series and then it ends up being bad ya'know. I hope Ubisoft tries to take their time with the Assasins Creed series. But this one might cool. I hope the they make the Pyramids climbable cause that would be hot

    Yeah Egypt would be cool, the end of Assassins creed 2 hinted at finding civilisations with pyramid type architecture, though they looked more like ziggurats of the aztec or mongolians

  • thanatosser

    Posted Jun 10, 2010 12:25 am GMT

    Elvis4576.... that's a brilliant idea!!!!! A French revolution AC would be superb! You could work alongside the 'scarlet pimpernel' A great side quest could be to smuggle the Marquis De Sade's novels out of the Bastille!!!!! Free running over the plague ridden squalor of Paris would be awesome.
    Also it’s an ACTUAL point in history and not a "summarisation" or "round up" of a period like the 2 games so far. Pklus the accents would be hilarious. In the long run if they run out of ideas they could always do a Neanderthal assassin lol

  • thanatosser

  • sanjbanwait

    Posted Jun 9, 2010 2:53 pm GMT

    sounds very intruiging. but the way they have set it up so far, there could be unlimited amount of possibilities and eras to explore. saying that, wouldnt it be awesome to have an AC game set in oldschool Japan, through the ages of samurai and ninjas....seems almost like a perfect fit.

    Egypt huh? meh I was hoping for a modern day given the ending... I guess it would be kinda hard/unrealistic to copy the gameplay (leap of faith, swords, etc) in a modern day setting, hopefully that have a bit of both? There is no way they could end it on egypt

  • QuantumShark

    Posted Jun 8, 2010 9:47 pm GMT

    My prediction was that AC3 would take place in the present, with Miles now ready to take on the Assassin role. Scaling modern skyscrapers... etc. I guess I was wrong, partly gladly, since I would hate AC to turn into a shooter/sniper kind of game since such weapons make the hidden blade a li'l obsolete.

    They said something about temples to visit to stop Earth from burning up and they needed to visit them. I'm pretty sure that one might be in the pyramids.
