Tecmo Bowl Throwback tackles PSN

PlayStation Store Update: Gridiron remake and Planet MiniGolf hit the PS3 downloadable store alongside a new PSP Minis take on crosswords.

The past proves as alluring as the future this week as Tecmo's 1987 football title gets a face-lift and sees release on the PlayStation Store. The gridiron classic is joined on Sony's online platform by a PSOne action game from 1998, a new PSP Minis take on a timeless diversion, and the usual barrage of add-on content, videos, demos, themes, and more.

Leading the pack this week is Tecmo Bowl Throwback ($9.99). A revamp of the publisher's NES-era football games, Throwback strives for the same general look and feel of the originals, only with high-definition graphics that can be toggled on or off.

If the thought of scrums and pileups is too much to stomach, Planet MiniGolf ($9.99) also arrived on the store this week. From Zen Studios comes this 16-hole, customizable minigolf title. Players can shoot for the lowest scores either alone or with friends in both local and online multiplayer. In addition, user-designed course layouts can be shared over the PlayStation Network. For those wrestling with uncertainty regarding digital minigolf, a demo for the title is also available in the store.

This week's addition to the PSOne originals catalog of games playable on both the PlayStation 3 and PSP is N2O Nitrous Oxide ($5.99). The Tempest-like action game sees players traverse the gameworld inside a tube, racing and shooting up enemies while the music of Crystal Method plays in the background.

New to the PSP Minis library this week is Telegraph Crosswords. The $2.99 title was created by Sanuk Games, the team that brought Telegraph Sudoku and Kakuro to the PSN last week. The game features more than 500 crossword puzzles broken into three categories: quick, general, and cryptic.

A full list of the week's deals and new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, discounts, and add-on content, is available on the PlayStation Blog.

If it was fully customizable, then I would be all over this. I don't need a NFL license. But the lack of 32 teams is what kills the deal for me. I also would have preferred the graphics from Super Tecmo Bowl III.

I just downloaded it, but have yet to play it. If it stinks, I still have my NES version in very workin' order. I've been readin' some kinda bleak reviews on BackBreaker though . . .

The reviews for Temco Bowl were terrible though. the game doesn't have any NFL teams or players, because EA owns the rights, so it's really a waste of time. Definitely demo this game first if you are considering buying it. ****************************************************************

That'll be up to Konami. I own Suikoden I - IV. I've only completed the 1st game though. The first 2 games were still the best I think.

im getting tecmo on ps3, but im a little sick of waiting for more goods games on PSN(ps1classics), i really want suikoden 1, and some other good ps1 games, it just seems like they keep putting this random trash up for download, ive already downloaded all of the good stuff.

This isn't a Sony exclusive, it's already out for the 360.

I enjoyed Tecmo Bowl on NES, so I think a throw back is a clever idea.Good job Sony!

um... both Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Super Bowl had real teams and players.. Obviously, those licenses are up and the players in this game are make believe.. you might read ANYTHING about the game before commenting

If they have real teams, with up to date players then I am all in for that game experience. I would much rather play an update then the nfl games we have today.
