Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock confirmed, detailed

Neversoft's battle-worn rhythm franchise to heavily emphasize axe-shredding gameplay, Gene Simmons narrating story mode.

Earlier this week, it appeared as if retailers had shredded out the opening chords of Activision's latest rhythm game, listing stand-alone and bundled versions of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii. It hasn't taken long for official confirmation of Neversoft's next effort to come, courtesy of Nintendo Power magazine.

While Sega's just-announced Sonic Colors has taken the cover of Nintendo Power, the magazine's online site has posted an image for the first two pages of a feature story on Warriors of Rock. According to Neversoft project lead Brian Bright, though little has changed as far as the standard note-matching gameplay, Warriors of Rock will return to the emphasis of the series to rock and roll.

"All of the cool features and things we did in GH5--the level of polish--[are] still there," he told the magazine. "Party Play still exists. The ability to play with any instrument combination--all that stuff is still in the game. But what we strove do here is handpick all the songs…So many more people play Guitar Hero on guitar than any other instrument. We wanted to focus first and foremost on shredding kind of rock."

Bright also briefly discussed the game's story mode, which will be narrated by KISS frontman Gene Simmons, as the prodigiously tongued singer previously confirmed. The storyline will apparently center upon the Beast and the demigod of rock.

"The Beast defeats the demigod of rock, and the demigod of rock is entombed in stone, and his legendary guitar is banished," Bright said. "[The guitar] is the source of his power. And so you are going through and assembling an army of warriors to be able to defeat the Beast. Along the way, you'll have to recover the legendary guitar, but in the end, you're defeating the Beast."

Nintendo Power also noted that the Wii edition, which is in development at Vicarious Visions, will exclusively feature three "Roadie modes," all of which integrate with the DS. In Roadie Set List Manager, gamers can build a custom setlist on the DS. In Roadie Quickplay+ and Roadie Battle modes, DS gamers will be able to assist Wii players by contributing beneficial and detrimental effects to their friends and foes.

The magazine's two-page spread did not offer an expected release date for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. However, according to retailers, the rhythm game will be available on September 19.

Done checked out some of the songs on RB3 and WHOOOAA hold up.. the songs on GH6 are gonna shred RB3 songs.. gh6 songs are WAY more difficult in the charts.. and has A LOT more and GH6 is gonna have a new guitar too, but I"m more about the songs and difficulty trust me, there are gonna be more people online with GH6 other than RB3 and take if from some who complete EVERY GH and RB game to date no fanboy here.. I just know the facts

Roadie Mode sounds awful. I haven't touched my Wii or DS in ages.

Demigod of Rock versus the Beast. Isn't this the same story they've been using since GH3?

I think I'll be saving up for RB3 instead. The new keyboard peripheral will probably cost me a hefty sum.

Well I actually like the carrier modes of GH 1-3, I was very disppointed with WT for changing the style of the game, maybe this one will recover that essence . I am more a RB fan than a GH but still this game look promising

So. For $60 you get GH: World Tour with "handpick"-ed songs. Nothing new or that couldn't have been a download or song pack.

The story in a Guitar Hero game is like the story in a fighting game. It's just there to get your from one song to the next. It's pointless bloat.

I find so funny that people complain of the amount of GH games, but don't do it about the number of Fifa or PES games. The way I see it, they're doing the same stuff, releasing new songs and tweaking the gameplay a bit, just like these games, where they tweak the gameplay and add new players >_>

Focus on guitar? They weren't doing that before? Hopefully this is considered Guitar Hero 6 because if it isn't then they didn't learn their lesson of not flooding the market with music games, Neversoft is run by morons on the other hand so it wouldn't surprise me if GH 6, GH WoR, BH 2, DJH 2, etc are all released within a month of each other.

Hm, with all the talk of beasts and shredding, it makes me think it's more METAL then rock. Which is alright with me

Warriors of Metal? i'm hoping the track list of the game is up to the name, adding a variety of genders and metal, only, bands not the classic metallica megadeth and black sabbath we've been seeing.

Activision claim they are going for more 'Rock N Roll' like GH3 (hence GH6's title)......in my honest opion if this GH turns out bad or does not go back to how it was (which seems to not be the case) then i highly doubt there will be a GH8 (maybe 7), but we will see more 'Band Oriented' games e.g Hendrix (on its way), Megadeth (on its way) , Red Hot Chili Peppers.....well you get the idea

We'll see how the setlist turns out. It can't be any worse than GH5.

  • Crazyguy105

    Posted May 31, 2010 1:14 pm GMT

Same level of polish as Guitar Hero 5?

I guess that means it will just be GH5 with a different setlist and a few new things.

I don't get why people say GH has failed. I have had all the main titles, and enjoyed each one. Now they are saying there is more guitar based songs, great. GH has and always will be, fun. What has rock band done differently?

Why is Activision turning out to be a hungry monster who feeds on the money of people? Why can't they just make one amazing game and not a thousand copy and pastes? CoD every year, Guitar Hero every month. I bet the next decent ( new I.P. ) game they make, if successful, will literally come out every second.

I will give GH one last chance with this game. For it to work it needs: to GET RID OF TOUCH STRIP on the guitar
fix the hammer ons & offs
Give us the Les Paul guitar from GH3, that was perfect
Or they could just make everything about the guitar the same as it was in GH3, i cant play huge guitar solos in any other games cos its so F***ed up. just do wat u did with GH3 and add drums and mic, and i'll be completely happy with it

This series really needs to end. All they do is milk it out, just because people will buy it. People need to realize this, and just stop buying it. It's the same stuff over and over again. At least EA isn't milking Rock Band by releasing the same stuff over and over again.

Also, this idea is kind of stupid, if not desperate.

I cant believe these are still going... They're all exactly the same as the first.

Then again I guess madden keeps selling too.

Also, I have to agree that simply playing a real instrument is significantly more rewarding, cooler, and most likely cheaper.

Gene Simmons......he found a new way to make money. KISS Coffin....google it. There's a KISS everything. I bet there's a KISS fly swatter swatting a fly with a kiss T-Shirt on. We'll see about the game, and I do love a few KISS songs, but RB is still my favorite for the infinite DLC.
