Capcom claims Mega Man Universe

Publisher applies for a trademark on term as it relates to retail, downloadable, and mobile games, screensavers, and ring tones.

Since Mega Man debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System some 23 years ago, the Blue Bomber has appeared in 126 games, selling a combined 28 million copies, according to Capcom's latest figures. With a wealth of robot bosses, allies, and adversaries in each one of those titles, the Mega Man franchise is the publisher's most prolific franchise, doubling the nearest competitor--Street Fighter--when it comes to the number of games bearing the brand.

The publisher has acknowledged the scope of the series and is considering trading on it, as Capcom filed an application with the US Patent and Trademark Office last week for a trademark on the phrase "Mega Man Universe." The application seeks a trademark on the name for a number of uses, including games (both retail and downloadable), and mobile phone applications, including game, screensavers, music, wallpaper, and ring tones.

The Mega Man series has enjoyed a renaissance of late with Capcom's downloadable retro-styled games Mega Man 9 and Mega Man 10. Both titles bypassed the Battle Network and Star Force spin-offs in order to focus on retro side-scrolling platformer action along the lines of the first six NES installments of the series and were well received by critics.

    Ah, i wish they'd release a new megaman X or megaman legends/dash + X . A shame it shouldn't happen anytime soon.

As much as the new throwback sequels are cool from a conceptual perspective, it would be really nice to see a full fledged, next gen Mega Man series. I particularly think a redux of the Mega Man X storyline in SFIV style 2.5D would be incredible. Even full 3D could be great if they do it well.

My guess is that "Mega Man Universe" isn't a single game.
More likely it's going to be Capcom's Mega Man brand.
They'll release (or re-release) games, books, toys, etc. with a graphic "Mega Man Universe" banner at the top of the box.
Maybe they're planning on releasing games starring peripheral characters. Under the "Mega Man Universe" banner they won't have to include "Mega Man" in the in the title proper and the consumer will still know why they should care about the game.

Like how there are 50,000 books with the "Forgotten Realms" D&D banner at the top. Those books don't necessarily all relate to each other or have the same characters in them, but they all take place in the same world.

That's my theory anyway. It's all marketing.

They can have it. I'm not signing up to pay lots of money for 15% of a game which I'll have to pay for the other 85% via DLC.

Someone out there take MegaMan Legends, write a badass story, cell-shade it in HD, bring it to the 360/PS3 along with the first two as downloadable content, and sell millions. For sure.

I think an MMO is a bad idea. Not because I think it's good, but because I think the MMO genre really isn't going anywhere lately. Sure, great things could be done with this IP in an MMO setting, but why caste this into something else when Mega Man's identity is already so iconic in other genres?

Please be some sort of spin-off of Mega Man Legends but along the lines of Monster Hunter's multiplayer. Imagine how awesome that would be?

I'm guessing it's some online store or venue, but not an MMO. I would be interested in some kinda MMO from this franchise but I don't see that as a direction they'll take. Maybe a regular game that features a strong online presence.

Normal reploids cant do anything though. So it'd be maveric hunters vs maverics.

I see a lot of good possibilities with this Mega Man Universe thing. An MMO is just one of many. Although a good one. Can imagine the awesomeness of creating your own robot with his own powers and fighting classic robot masters with a bunch of friends. Pure Sweetness.

You start out with the ability to be one of the primary colors. At level 5 you get dash ability. At level 10 you get robot pet. At level 15 you get charge ability for gun. At level 20 you decide if you want gun or sword.

And so, the serpent's egg would hatch...

Now that I think about it a Megaman MMO would actually be a good idea assuming you use the Megaman X storyline. Granted you can't be X or Zero but you can easily play as a maveric hunter.
