GoldenEye, Assassin's Creed, Driver, Bloodstone URLs reg'd

Activision locks down Web addresses for two potential James Bond games; Ubisoft registers domains, which may hint at titles for spin-offs, sequels of stealth-action, driving franchises.

Game companies occasionally register domain names (see playstationarc.com) that don't end up being the final title of a product (see the PlayStation Move). However, oftentimes when a company locks down a URL, it points to the moniker of a new game or device.

With that caveat in mind, it's unclear what to make of four nonfunctioning URLs dug up by Web-info-trawler Superannuation. The first two come from Activision, and both pertain to the James Bond license it acquired in 2006. The publisher has locked down the Web address bloodstonegame.com, apparently the title of a 007-branded driving game that popped up on British retailer HMV earlier this week.

The second, goldeneyegame.com, is likely to arouse much more interest amongst gamers. That's because it bears the name of Rare's N64 1997 game based on the 1995 film GoldenEye, Pierce Brosnan's first outing as the martini-swilling agent. Unfortunately, it's also the title of a lackluster 2004 game from former James Bond license-holder EA, in which players assumed the role of a James Bond villain named GoldenEye. What Activision has in store for these URLs is unclear, as Activision reps gave a polite "no comment" when asked about them.

Superannuation also noticed that Ubisoft locked down the (currently dead) URL assassinscreedbrotherhood.com on April 14, 2010. Though the publisher hadn't responded to requests for comment, the name evokes a group of assassins versus the solo hero of the first two games.

Though Ubisoft had not commented on the URL, the company did announce in January that it was readying an Assassin's Creed II "episode," which would add online multiplayer and new single-player content to the 8-million-unit game.

Finally, Ubisoft has also registered the domain name driversanfranciscogame.com, which may--or may not--hint at a reboot of the driving series. The company picked up the venerable license from fellow French publisher Atari in 2006 and subsequently published the poorly reviewed Driver: Parallel Lines.

In 2008, evidence surfaced that the company was working on an all-new entry in the series for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. However a 2009 US Patent & Trademark Office filing indicated pointed toward the title "Driver: The Recruit." According to an Ubisoft financial report, the next Driver game is due out sometime before March 2011.

Goldeneye beats any modern shooter...not goldeneye rogue agent. They need to make another Bond game like goldeneye...Goldeneye was the onlt bond game that had a LONG and addictive campaign with blood.

I would love to see a Goldeneye remake for the 360,Update graphics and all that jazz. I honestly thought Driver was sort of corny and didnt live up to its full potential, I always figured it to be more a Transporter type game instead of literally just driving.

I'm happy to see a new Driver game is coming out, and a new James Bond game would be nice. I enjoyed the Quantum of Solace game Treyarch developed. Yet if one of those James Bond games is a remake of Goldeneye, I hope it's good.

I really hope that they do make a good recreation of goldeneye but I have a feeling that nostalgia might weigh heavier than we think. One of the main reasons Goldeneye was so successful was the multiplayer aspect. Never before then has 4 player split screen been so fun on a console. Since we've all been pampered with online play I just hope that they can do something that will really spice up interest like they did with the first.
I also hope that there's not a ton of amendments to the story, levels etc. I want a solid recreation with same levels and all, not a reimagining.

Redo Rogue Agent! It was fun if not a mite hard (i swear the enemies in that game had more accurate guns that you did, even tho u used the same guns :p) The game had some problems, but if it where remade right, that would be something to see! And change the story so you actually attack MI6 instead of dicking around with Dr. No and Goldfinger the entire time!

looking forward to a next gen James Bond game. if done right that is. Bond has so many cool gadgets and potential for epic storylines that a truly GOOD bond game would be amazing. the kind of game that gives COD a run for its money

This is a little disappointing. Goldeneye... the first one, is one of the greatest games of all time. It was ahead of its time. And now Activision will most likely make it an annual release. Pumping out s&*# again and again...

Rare should have keep it to themselves.

lol lawyers, yeah. But did I forget to mention that Kotick's excrement would be highly acidic? And it would stay on players for the duration of the match, slowly eating away at their health. Yes, everything Bobby Kotick touches dies ... or gets turned into a soulless zombie in the least.

Why is 'GoldenEye' central to the title of these games and not '007' or 'James Bond'?

Sure, Activision can exploit its market and stretch the Call of Duty brand to include multiple developers' titles. Sure, Fallout or Baldur's Gate can simultaneously mean strategic CRPG or console Action RPG. But can Activision seriously rely on gamers to buy their game based on its ownership of the title of a completely unrelated game?

I would expect that this game will not at all relate to the GoldenEye film specifically. It will not build directly on gameplay fundamentals from the N64 legend GoldenEye 007. In Activision's hands, this brand has no relation to its roots -- it's a cheap marketing scheme to grasp your attention with another lackluster shooter. Do not buy this game based on your affection for another franchise by another developer in another decade.

Remaking Goldeneye won't work out. The only reason the remake of Perfect Dark went so well is because it was a perfect game to begin with.

    PD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Goldeneye.

I am really anxious as to what Activision would do with GoldenEye. Knowing that EA is its closest competitor, it won't probably won't make the sh** that EA made.

  • wyan_

    Posted Apr 25, 2010 8:35 pm GMT

@otanikun Yes, Goldeneye is far more deserving than PD. For one thing, Goldeneye had smoother aiming. I do like PD, but the controls are a lot sloppier than its predecessor. I'd love to get my hands on an HD Goldeneye remake though.

Everything Activision touches dies. I really hope they back off of a new Goldeneye. If they make it, won't be long before they are churning out Bond games every year. With Activision, it is quantity not quality.

Honestly I think it's terrible that they considered Perfect Dark for a remake or a reworking of graphics first before considering GoldenEye, it should have been done years ago.

Oh and I'm still waiting for a remake/sequel to Jet Force Gemini kthnx.

inb4haters because of the Perfect Dark comment: It was a good game don't get me wrong, but I think GoldenEye was more deserving.

James Bond Bloodstone: Its sad enough that MGM is quitting out on The Bond movies for a while but now a James Bond driving game. Oh god. It'll score score less then a 6/10.

James Bond Goldeneye: That should be epic. If they do it right.

Assassins Creed Brotherhood: Its definiteIy not gonna be finishing the series, but i guess in some ways it might be... AC 3 BROTHERHOOD. Kinda catchy for a final in the series. It could be another full feature episode to either Altiar or Ezio to give you a deeper understanding of the story; it could be just another PSP exclusive; or it could be with subject 16. I hope its AC 3 the final game in the series!!!!
