Third Borderlands DLC drops this week

The Secret Armory of General Knoxx intros new missions, weapons, vehicle, level cap to Gearbox's shooter for $10 on XBL tomorrow, PS3 and PC Thursday.

About this time last month, Gearbox Software announced that it was prepping a third add-on for its 3-million-unit-selling Borderlands, an expansion the studio promised would be its "biggest" yet. 2K Games didn't give gamers much of a heads-up on an exact date, saying today that The Secret Armory of General Knoxx will be available on Xbox Live tomorrow. The PlayStation 3 and PC release will follow this Thursday, February 25.

Like the critically welcomed Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and the welcomed critically Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot add-ons, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx will cost $9.99 (MSP800). Gearbox claims the add-on offers nearly double the amount of content packed into Zombie Island. Included in the package will be a new class of high-end weapons, a level-cap increase to 61, a new vehicle that seats up to four, nearly 30 new villain types, and tweaked AI.

The Secret Armory of General Knoxx will also include a new storyline that picks up immediately after the events in the original game. As detailed in GameSpot's first look at the DLC, players find themselves being hunted by the Atlas Corporation. Of course, this kind of affront isn't to be taken lying down, and players will team up with a former Atlas employee named Athena to take the fight to the corporation.

    Anyone have any problems downloading Secret Armory? It just quits the download process about 1/3 of the way in.

    Finally got a chance to play this. Freaking sweet, is about all there is to say. Borderlands DLC has yet to disappoint. (Sure, there wasn't a lot to Underdome, but get a few friends together and it's an absolute blast.)

    Got it earlier for the ps3. It's a pretty good challenge on playthrough 2 even on a level 50 lol.

    @andalore

    I know, I have a friend who is looking to buy it used, and can't find it at any Gamestop. I told him "Look, there are so few used copies because few people are selling it back because the game is dope, just buy a new one dammit!"

    Downloaded this DLC last night... I'm only an hour or two into it, but it's really, really good. Tips for those who don't know: Ninjas are NOT your friends.

    It's great to see developers standing behind the product. Borderlands will be successful at least till the summer and hopefully beyond. I really love how people bash this game. What is so wrong with a game that has the same controls as Call of Duty; Ability to drive (with friends); 4 player co-op (split screen/LAN/server); RPG elements. Seems like the ultimate game to me, keep the add-ons coming.

    glad to see some worthwhile additions in the DLC this time - more weapons, new vehicles and increased level cap.

    much better than Moxxi's Underdome Riot

    i just want to say this about dlc. with this third one grand total will be $90. I have played borderlands since its release. Ihave 2 level 50 and a level 40. I have played through over five times. mostgames i have played last a few weeks then i'm bored. two other games wouldnt even match that kind of replay for me,and that would be $120 right there. so i say keep it coming until borderlands 2. just make it worth it. (underdome was over priced).

    Sorry to spam the comments, but it looks like the DLC is available on Xbox.com, but only if you have a code for it. You can't yet buy it. Which is, frankly, pretty damn weird. I guess "Secret Armory" is a pretty apt name.

    Graeme Boyd, who is apparently the Xbox Community Manager, posted on his Twitter that it was being delayed by a day.

    On the other hand, @GearboxSoftware says it should be available right now. I guess we'll see how it goes. At the very least, it's still not available on Xbox.com for me.

    @mikekearn: Did they make an announcement that it would be postponed till tomorrow? Most of the time they wait till later to put it on the marketplace (at least that is how PSN works dunno about LIVE) but it may be on later, unless they did make an official announcement that I can't find.

    i did like the first 2 addons but not worth $10 in my opinion, little lower price woulda been nice but im glad i bought them though. But i think they defiantly price this addon nicely. Most likely anyone still liking borderlands will like this addon with its even more content in my opinion.

    DLC are a cancer. Devs are gettin too lazy to release a real expansion set 6-8 months later with some real new content. Instead they release DLC, milking stupid players with very poor content.

  • mikekearn

    Posted Feb 23, 2010 8:52 am GMT

    @lazycomplife:
    Microsoft doesn't like free DLC, so patching in a bank (something rather significant) might not have been allowed. Including it with other DLC is perfectly fine. It's not something required in any way. The game is designed around equipping the best stuff you find, and discarding the rest. I'm not sure why you'd need a bank feature anyway.

    That said, I'm super excited to get this DLC. I went to Xbox.com to buy it, but it's not showing up there for me right now. I don't have access to my Xbox right now, so I can't check Marketplace, but I'm going to be pretty annoyed if I can't buy this when I get home. I want to give you money, Microsoft! Why won't you let me?

    EDIT: Well, crap. Apparently the DLC has been postponed until Wednesday. That kind of sucks.

    Oh shoot, I just remembered. I deleted my Roland and started over because I made the mistake of starting Play Through 2 rather then leveling up in Play Through 1 and then starting Play Through 2 (which is 2.5 I believe) when I was at 50 (my weapons were kind of disappointing anyway). Oh well, still can't wait.

    I want to know who thumbs down'd my last comment. Someone that doesn't like supporting developers? or someone that wants more sequels?

    Hey, I'm just saying I want to see more unique games in the fashion that Borderlands is unique. There can be a NEW game with the loot system of borderlands (and cel-shading looks great too), but it could include a story and more rpg elements. Maybe even new classes in a new setting. Maybe they could add magic and make a RPG/Shooter instead of a Shooter/RPG next time. There are many things that can be done to games to make them original pieces of work.

    I buy sequels. Mostly because they're just old versions of games I like, but with new things added in.

    In my opinion, $80 is a good price tag for borderlands and all 3 DLC, but Mad Moxxi was not worth $10. It's a fun and original game.

    EDIT: I did look up Mad Moxxi, and I did pay that $10 for the bank. I really wanted a bank the whole game. There should have been one from the start, or at least patched in.

    I'm guilty of avoiding most DLCs, but even I recognise that there are some that are worth every penny to me as they extend a game I'm enjoying. The Borderlands stuff is certainly what I'd call worth it...

    I mean if you don't like it or don't like the sound of the cost, you don't buy it... it's one of the most simple problems to solve(!) At the very least check reviews on the DLC to help you decide whether a purchase might be worth it...

    OK 2k, here is $90 total for Borderlands. At least this one seems like more content than Mad Moxxi, which was a rip-off (minus the bank feature which REALLY should have been included in the main game). Zombie Island was FUN!

    I would rather keep having levels added for Borderlands than have a sequel. A sequel means that it would carry on with the plot, which would mean Borderlands would have to have a plot to begin with.

    I want a patch for the online portion of Borderlands, really bad. Like the matchmaking, not the co-op. The co-op is tasty.

    Plus this DLC money is almost all for the developers, rather than selling a game in retail environment. Unfortunately, I'm a collector of video games, and DLC doesn't give me a shiny metal tin :'(
