UFC 2009 sells 3.5 million

THQ's ultimate-fighting game hits new sales milestone, now selling for just $30 on Microsoft's and Sony's consoles.

Anyone needing further proof of mixed martial arts' popularity got a reminder today. THQ announced that UFC 2009 Undisputed has hit another sales milestone, having sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide to date. Developed by Yuke's (WWE Smackdown), the T for Teen-rated game was released last May for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

To mark the occasion, THQ revealed that Microsoft has now added UFC 2009 Undisputed to its Platinum Hits Xbox 360 collection, with Sony also designating it a Greatest Hit on the PS3. The move means that the ultimate-fighting sim now costs just $30 on either console, half of its original $60 price point.

UFC 2009 Undisputed has been a breakout hit for THQ, which credited it for helping the company reach record revenues last July. During its debut month, the game sold 679,600 copies on the Xbox 360 and another 334,400 on the PS3, topping the 1-million-unit mark in a matter of weeks. (Handheld and Wii editions are planned for this year's sequel.) Critics also responded warmly to the game, as evidenced by GameSpot's video review below.

    I dont know why people like MMA so much. Its just two dudes on the ground doing submissions for 10 minutes. Boring just like Boxing. WWE/TNA is fake but at least its entertaining. And to that person who says if they want no fighting games get a Wii: TvC/SSBB > any fighting game on the 360/PS3 to date.

    Did they ever fix the online play? I got rid of 2009 because it got to the point where if you beating someone online, they'd almost always quit out without penalty. If 2010 is the same, I think I'll be passing.

    I don't care what happens in real life. UFC 2009 is not real life. I can remember the tutorial in either the game or demo saying that weak strikes wouldn't cause KO's, yet in the game weak jabs are knocking me or an opponent out instantly.

    A much better game than the WWE series( yes I know both are different sports). I loved this game fight mechanics. Well deserved game and I am glad it sold well. Well I am now waiting for UFC 2010.

    I liked the game and bought at $60 but Best Buy had a bundle SALE, I also got a UFC event on DVD normally $15 and $10 off my next pay-per-view buy. Buy the looks of it I don't think much has improved or at least enough for me to buy the 2010 edition. The game itself was solid! I would have liked to seen some more individual fighter animations and a little trash talking from some of the fighters would have been nice. I really hope that the online gets fixed, I only played with friends online because I knew we wouldn't use the cheats. I'd like to really challenge myself with other opponents online.

    just because you suck at the game doesn't mean the game is bad it means you need to find another game rather then complain about a game that is good, sold well, and got good reviews. Your the douchebag that needs to find another game to play rather then cry about the game you aren't good at.

    Ultimate Fighter Mode where you improve your charachters attributes inside the house, go to the gym for sparring etc then a fight each week with the opposing team would take it up another level. Work your way up to take on the big dogs.

    Game is awesome, online is crap. I can only assume 2010 will fix that problem but a proper patch for this one would have been appreciated as it was necessary and not like you don't have the money to do it.

    Oh mang, because I couldn't wait any longer for 2010 and I wanted the best ufc game so far in my collection, I almost bought it yesterday. Good thing I didn't, cause I would have paid full price.

    It was a good game. I really enjoyed it. Probably the best "Fighter Type" Game I've played in years. I agree with others about the online play. It's pretty broken. Horrendous lag too often... exploits... ect. Hopefully next year we'll get improvements.

    (no turbo controller) I only ever won 2 matches by TKO/KO the rest were submissions. Wrestlers slams I agree are overpowered, it should take both stamina gauges down or none at all. Other than the wrestling slams I found most games to be VERY even and it very hard to be cheap. Try to spam high kick it gets caught you get submitted cro cops -_- lol

    I agree with online problems. When it first came out, it was quite a blast, except for the DNF problem they took forever to fix. Problem was, once everyone found all the broken things and exploits in the game, it became an online battle over who could use the exploit the game first and get the win. Not to mention, every single online battle was against the same 5 people; Brock, GSP, Mir, Rampage, and Rashad.

    yeah i gave up on the online very quickly. Not only did 90% of the people quit when they were getting whooped the rest just picked wrestlers and spammed slams which are way too overpowered and unstoppable. There was also no doubt in my mind that people were using turbo controllers for submissions. so they def need to rework things.

    game seemed good until you realized it was pure garbage with many limitation's hope 2010 see sum much needed improvements or else EA will blow them out the water big time

    Load times were nothing if you installed the game. At least, on the Xbox 360 anyway. I agree that it took forever to save but that could mostly be due to all the stupid 'game saved' messages. So yup, grats to them and even thou it was a great game, there is so much more they can do. May can't come soon enough!

    if they had an "ultimate fighter mode" kinda like the reality show that would be fun. make it online multiplayer and everybody's stats start at zero. that could be fun.

    The game was good when it first came out, but got stale especially online, which became more of a battle between the first one to use the exploits to win a match. It was definately a good first step for MMA games in close to 7 years (PRIDE FC in 2002), and look forward to the competition between THQ and EA to outdue each other in the MMA game department.

    I want this game so I can kick everyone @$$es that comes to my house b/c this game is fun when you play someone!! Lots of money gets gained and lost.. UFC Games rocks!! If u dont like this fighting game go buy or play with a wii.. and im sure PS3 and 360 fanboys will agree..
