Dead Rising 2 lurching to life this year

Capcom set to push its luck with the decomposing denizens of Fortune City by the end of 2010.

There's usually not much warning before a good old-fashioned zombie apocalypse descends to devour humanity, but Capcom is providing gamers with a "heads up" on the grisly (and gristle-y) end of civilization. The publisher today revealed that Dead Rising 2 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC will arrive in stores this year.

Previously, Capcom had only told investors that Dead Rising 2 would be one of its major releases for the coming fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2010, to March 31, 2011. The only other major releases the publisher specified for that period were Lost Planet 2, Monster Hunter Tri, and Super Street Fighter IV, all of which were delayed from the current fiscal year.

That wasn't the only news surrounding the Dead Rising franchise. Capcom Japan today confirmed that it is making a live-action film based on the game, with series creator Keiji Inafune also directing the movie adaptation. That project will be distributed over Xbox Live in Japan; a North American release has not yet been confirmed.

Dead Rising 2 will be set in a Las Vegas-like gambling metropolis called Fortune City. Set several years after the original's litigiously similar Dawn of the Dead-like mall massacre, the sequel sees zombification spreading unchecked across the US a la the best-selling novel World War Z. The game will also feature a four-person multiplayer mode, with tongue-in-cheek zombie slaughtering competitions set up like a TV game show.

Dead Rising 2 is in development at Vancouver-based Blue Castle Games. Prior to this project, the studio's most notable games have been Take-Two Interactive's arcade-style Major League Baseball games, The Bigs and The Bigs 2. For more on Dead Rising 2, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

    Capcom started off the year with a ......flop...........Dark Void..........oh well, I never really like Capcom very much but I will say that with Lost Planet and Dead Rising.......Some Street Fighter......and a few that I am forgetting or don't know about will make it a good year for them.

    the game needs a semi big or small sandbox world, no annoying time limit, a better save system, and no respawning bosses (like the annoying convicts) and I am totally in

    Why is there no online free roam!!!!! As soon as i heard about dead rising 2 thats what i wanted, even whilst playing the first one i thought that would be fun, just goin around, killing zombies with friends. Is there any chance of a free roam being DLC or an update later?

    no luck will be needed if this is as the same quaility game, or better that we played a few years ago, here's to hoping... but i am convinced that this game will a success lay it on me capcom, i am ready... more than ready... i'd love to see a demo months before launch of the game, that would probably help capcoms 'chances'...

    hopefully its not timed like the last time, i hated it no time to really explore, always checking the time, not fun really, and I agree with Hunter8man they need to change the save system

    I mean in general, most PC games being (scheduled) to be released alongside their console counter-parts are delayed (ACII comes to mind, SF etc.)

    I already have this pre ordered. Loved the first. Glad this is getting a multi platform release though as i only have a PS3 now

    Don't set a deadline! iz deh kizz O' DETH..... It'll be ready when it's ready and no time sooner than so. It takes pressure off developers so they are more likely to actually get in the time they think. And just bad luck foze ah game. Oh and fix the save system please.

    I hope that they dont rush this game, I am looking sooooo much forward to this, it would ruin the gaming year if the rush it, and dont perfect the potential of the game

    The first Dead Rising is just so awesome that this sequel is my most anticipated game of the year.I believe the game was slated to come out on August 31.. Whenever the game comes out I'm so looking forward to playing it.

    I passed on the Xbox 360 release, I was really considering to purchase the console for it. Now, I have less than 1 year of waiting to lay into the zombie massacre. I really want this game!

    Never played the first one (Shame on me), but this looks great. I mean, come on, a bike with chainsaws duct taped to it? Can you get anymore awesome?! I will be following this one till release.
