Assassin's Creed II sells 6 million, MP 'episode' incoming

[UPDATE] Ubisoft's stealth action adventure hits new multiplatinum milestone; new, standalone product introducing online multiplayer by March 2011.

Following Ubisoft's second-quarter earnings report in November, the publisher held a conference call in which CFO Alain Martinez teased that "there might be something around Assassin's Creed" in 2010. At that time, however, it was unclear whether Martinez's comment pertained to an all-new installment in the franchise, downloadable content for Assassin's Creed II, or some kind of live-action short a la Assassin's Creed Lineage.

Along with delaying Splinter Cell: Conviction and R.U.S.E. and lowering its fiscal-year guidance today, Ubisoft also provided a bit more color on what gamers can expect from Assassin's Creed in the near future. During its fiscal year running April 1-March 31, 2011, Ubisoft plans to release "a new episode of Assassin's Creed, which will be the first in the series to have an online multiplayer mode." Unfortunately, no other details on the project were provided.

[UPDATE] According to an Ubisoft representative, the aforementioned new episode will be a standalone product. The rep also confirmed that Assassin's Creed II protagonist Ezio will be featured in the game.

Ubisoft also offered a sales update for its most recent installment in the franchise, Assassin's Creed II. Having sold 1.6 million units globally during its first week, Assassin's Creed II has now achieved worldwide sales of 6 million units. Released to critical praise on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in November, the game follows a new protagonist, Ezio, who teams up with the likes of Leonardo da Vinci during the Medici-run Renaissance era in Italy. (A PC installment is expected this year.)

Ubisoft also said that Assassin's Creed II is outselling its equally praised 2007 predecessor by 40 percent. The publisher expects Assassin's Creed II to sell some 9 million units by the end of its current fiscal year in March.

MP Assassins Creed? Feck yeah I@ll have some of that. I rented the game, got to give it back on thursday. But I may well buy this. If standalone means seperate and can be played without the regular game, that is.

Oh bring it on for sure, I would love to see how it’s gonna work, the more Assassin’s Creed the better if you ask me!!! Maybe we are going to see some of the other assassin’s ancestors, would be a nice lead up to the 3rd game!!!

My friend and I were on the XBL Party chat and collecting feathers at the same time. I would like to see something like Fable and Crackdown were you could do achievements/story mode at the same time. it would be WAY TO EASY tho because there isnt a difficulty option. AC2 was so easy to finish missions.

The game is far too easy with the jumping around part being the only hard part. It's only hard getting around too because he moves around like an idiot and trips over everything! I hope the next game he can move a little more freely. Even getting off an edge is a bee itch.

I hope they make Rome a playable city. Maybe a little too much to ask for but that'd be freaking awesome... I'd pay a lot for that.

@Tripleseed: It would've been epic to have some co-op action in Arkham. Throw a little Dick Grayson in there for good measure (As Nightwing, of course).

Anyway, I think Assassin's Creed could easily rock some multi. When I was doing to the capture the flag mission, I was thinking how interesting it would be to have that take place covering the entire city with 16 assassins running around. Not to mention...deathmatch? sexy sexy.

Ubisoft should allow players to play (small) branching storylines of other character classes. For example, players should be allowed to play as either a theif, Templar, mercenary ( and yes, an assassin), and give players the option of becoming the online "leader" of their guild or association.

The only way I could really see the AC working with mp is it was just a bunch of challenges. Like have 4 assassins all go after 1 target and if you're detected then you go back to some starting point. Or a mode could start with 1 assassin and a few targets and if you're a target and die you respawn as an assassin, like those 'infected' modes in some other games. I think it could work...

I hope they make a good multiplayer option. But even though they do it... im not sure if i wanna use it, cus the single player history and gameplay is awesome alone. and i play it on x-box so i have to pay to play online (its lame and if any of you know how to avoid it i would be very happy).

Right now i hope they don't skrew the next AC singleplayer history up just because of the multiplayer. next thing i hope that there is Coop... that would be awesome!

    @ Tripleseed

you dn't have to play the multiplayer if u dn't want to u act like when they add it on u have to play it when RE5 got its multi I ddn't play it because it looked stupid and it was stupid but guess what RE5 is still good also bioshock multi would be awesome but not so much dead space

Co-Op would definately be a massive win ! However i still hope to see an Assassins Creed 3 featuring Desmond as the main star. That would be awesome.

A co-op mode would be a nice addition to the game, but a competitive mode would be kind of strange. Imagine Assassin's Creed TDM...

Assassin's Creed 2 is probably the best singleplayer game I've played. But lets see if they can pull of multiplayer. Pray it ends up well.

Not really sure how they could pull off AC multiplayer, but I believe in them. You can do it guys. Just don't screw it up.

    Posted Jan 16, 2010 4:50 pm GMT

I was just talking with my brother the other day about all these singleplayer only experiences adopting haphazard multiplayer modes. I am kind of upset to see that Assassin's Creed is going the way of Dead Space and BioShock, simply to appease their 12-16 year old fans who actually want to play those games online for some reason. It makes no sense to me. What next, Batman: Arkham Asylum multiplayer?

  • yamzta

    Posted Jan 16, 2010 9:14 am GMT

yeah... not that multiplayer would be bad at all, but they really need to buff up the enemies because they're already easy in single player...

    Posted Jan 16, 2010 8:25 am GMT

If this is true the game types they could have
in assassians creed mp would be endless.

    Posted Jan 16, 2010 8:09 am GMT

wow sounds exciting.... i've always said that it would be great if AC had multiplayer, me and my younger bro thought it would be good to have a horde kind of mode, in which you see how long you can withhold large numbers of guards, with stats etc, online and same screen multiplayer.
anyway any online on AC is a welcome addition. perhaps a race mode/ target assassination....

    @BlackForestHam

Lol yeah, (and...well this wasn'nt known in AC1) but since Ezio made hidden blades without chopping off his fingers, if the assassins still use them in modern days they wouldnt have to chop off their fingers either (unless they wanted to be badass)

haha, well i guess re-animating her hotter is better

    Some ideas:

Guardian: A team of players play guards and must protect a sacred relic in a cathedral from being taken. A team of players play assassins and must steal this artifact.

Turn-Coat: A team of players play assassins and must avoid being turned. One player plays the Borgia messenger (with upgraded speed) and must turn (by tackling) other players. Once a player is turned, they too become Borgia messengers.

Shadow Strike: A larger team of assassins must work to bring down a heavily guarded target. Be warned, however, for another smaller team of assassins must work to save the target.

    Yeah? No? I don't know...lol.

AC2 multiplayer possibilities...Assassination mode (King Of The Hill style where someone is "it"), Race For The Treasure (Capture The Flag style to see who can reach treasure first, maybe even return it to base), Guild War mode (Team Deathmatch), etc. They won't bring anything new to the table, just rename existing modes. Still, it'd be fun as long as they keep the AC feel and atmosphere and not just do a deathmatch mode with a billion skins (Rabbids, etc).

multiplayer??? how on earth would that work?
    perhaps co-op doing missions?
i can think of a couple of times during the game it would be great to have a partner taking out security from another angle

cant wait for the dlc though

I kind of thought they could add the capture the flag game as online multiplayer when I played the Carnival part of AC2. Anyway, I can't wait for AC3, they said it's a triology so I think they will be wrapping up Desmond's story on it. I hope you get to play as A&E!

the idea of MP would be good though like running on roof tops killing a specific guard or catch the flag. and coop can be like up four players because they were parts where u played with the cpu to fight hordes of soliders and so on. it can work depending what concepts they use. but i agree with the poster who spoke about mw2 being over hyped and it wasnt that good. good thing i got ac2 when it first came out and i got mw 2 on xmas on sale for 40 dollars
