Final Fantasy VIII 'coming soon' to PSN

Sony newsletter indicates Square's classic JRPG headed to PS3's online storefront in the near future.

Most of the buzz surrounding Final Fantasy these days pertains to XIII, which PlayStation 3 owners in Japan will be able to bite into tomorrow. And while Western audiences won't see Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360 and PS3 until March 9, it appears as if Sony and Square Enix will have a downloadable edition of Final Fantasy VIII on tap for the PlayStation Network sometime soon.

Sony notified the public of such in a recent e-mail blast detailing a batch of new content coming to or out now for the PlayStation 3. Specifically, Final Fantasy VIII is listed alongside Buzz Quiz World and District 9 in the "Coming Soon" section of Sony's newsletter.

Originally released for the PlayStation in 1999, Final Fantasy VIII found itself in the unsavory position of following Square's highly acclaimed Final Fantasy VII, which surfaced on the PS Store in June. Still, the game managed to achieve substantial acclaim, thanks to a storyline that follows Squall Leonheart and other military academy graduates as they join the elite combat unit Seed.

Final Fantasy VIII is still my favorite FF game so far. VII was great but VIII is still better. Squall was the best hero to come out of Square and I'm glad to ahve him again on the PSP! Next up: Final Fantasy IX!

see now i loved FFVIII my brother thought it was horrible, short and too easy
the easy bit i agree with, and they did fail on the graphics, it was too early to get graphics into more real life animation, but i thought it was an amazing game, good story, great characters, guy with a gun (Y)
the only prblem i really had with it was the magic, magic was quite random at how much damage and stuff it did, and wasnt ocmpletely helpful, although the junctioning stuff was a good idea, i duno i just felt like the feel of FF was slightly lost from magic

Even though I know it wont happen I do wish they would do a proper re-make of it with updated graphics, extra monsters, characters, locations etc. That said I can't wait for this one of my all time favourite games!

my favorite FF game. i bought this the first day it was available on PSN.i used to rip my own ISOs from my physical discs and had to switch different versions of POPSTATION just to go around game-crashing bugs. now i can sink my time on drawing spells uninterrupted!

solidusScott, FF9 is a great RPG that references many previous FF's in sometimes-strong, sometimes-subtle ways. It's my co-favorite in the series with FF7.

Definitely getting this one. I haven't played FF VIII in years. Can't wait for them to put up FF IX cause its the only Final Fantasy I haven't played.

PSN and Xbox Live Arcade are both great places for games like Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8.

Personally, I'm very surprised we haven't seen Dreamcast games on Xbox Live, since many Dreamcast games used Windows operating systems for development.

i didnt enjoy VIII, in general SE has failed in delivering a game that could surpass VII, i love XIII but i have my expectation set on Versus being the one to redefine FF like VII did, that or w/e idea Nomura has in that mind of his that he wont tell anybody about for VII's next sequel

I would rather stick a pitchfork through my eyes than play that game on the PS3. Unless, of course, it was remastered in HD. Then I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

also, to those who are still talking trash about this game - just stfu!. it's either you are too dumb to understand the junction system or you didn't play this game at all.

@petch1984: fighting omega weapon was one of the things which made this game very memorable for me. i lost my Laguna Loir card in the card game (which could be converted to hero potions) and it took me a very long time to beat this enemy. Even with Auto-haste, Auto-Aura, etc. I still had to use the Lionheart quite a lot. I think it's one of the best limit breaks ever created in a FF game. So to those who did not fight Omega Weapon on your first run of the game, (it's not the same as Ultima Weapon), make sure you take this sidequest right before you go to the final battle with Ultimecia.

Amen to that. But Santa Clause made his apprearance in Secret of Mana, not Final Fantasy....right?

just remake 7 , like thier doing everything possible before going to that last option in making it with ps3 graphics. they want to get full pays worth out of everyway possible till they finalize they will make ff7 the same but with ps3 HD Thats what is going on if you have not noticed garrenty, you might not believe it but just watch in the near future.

Final Fantasy I through VII, including off-shoots like Mystic Quest, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Breath of Fire (well, that's not really an off-shoot), and the original Game Boy games (Adventure and Legend series) all included a few things that made Final Fantasy fun: medievalism.

Final Fantasy VIII appears to take place in the universe of Highlander II. (If you get that reference, then you know I didn't give in a compliment.)

Final Fantasy IX returned to the what made the series fun. Then the boring, crappy, speaking-out-of-sync dark movie comes out, the eye-candy only X and X-2, and the terrible EverQuest wanna-bees since.

I want dragons, chocobos, Santa Clause, moggles, silliness, castles that sink in the sand, sarcastic megalomaniacs, planets with two moons...

    @ayanematrix

I don't think they are doing this for people who already own a "mint condition copy". It's for the people who want it on their PS3's and PSP's and it's definitly for people who have not played it.

  • Zidaneski

Boy meets girl. Boy loses girl. Boy finds girl. Boy loses girl. Girl finds boy. Girl loses boy and dog. Boy finds dog.... and so on and so on, ad nausium. Then there's the "oh gee, we all knew each other when we were in school and just forgot" moment. Weak.

The only FF's that are worth a darn are 4-5-6-7 and the only FF i will ever buy is a next gen remake of any of these.
