Wii sells 9M in Japan, PS3 hits 4M mark

Enterbrain reports Nintendo's and Sony's consoles achieved multimillion-unit milestones during week ending Dec. 13; New Super Mario Bros. sells 465K in second week.

PlayStation 3 and Wii sales have by and large been neck-and-neck for the past few months in Japan, save for when the launch of a big-name title such as New Super Mario Bros. disrupts the balance. Still, Nintendo's console holds a sizable sales lead over its more powerful--and pricier--rival, a fact that was evidenced in glaring detail this week by Famitsu publisher and stat-tracking firm Enterbrain.

According to Japanese news site Andria Sang, Enterbrain announced today that both the Wii and PS3 had achieved significant sales milestones during the week ending December 13. The stat-tracking firm reports that the Wii topped the 9-million-unit mark during the period, having now sold 9,048,012 consoles since its December 2006 launch. Nintendo said two months ago that the console had sold more than 56 million units worldwide through September.

As for Sony's PS3, the console surpassed the 4-million-unit mark in Japan during the same week, having launched just a few weeks before the Wii in November 2006. Through December 13, the console has sold 4,020,563 units in Japan, and the PS3's global sales figures through September stand at 27 million.

Enterbrain also provided a sales update on New Super Mario Bros. Wii, saying that the game has sold 1,401,558 through December 13 in Japan. Last week, the stat-tracking firm revealed that Nintendo's latest platformer had sold 936,734 from December 3-6--the game's first tracked week of availability--and was the best opening performance for a Wii title in Japan since the console launched in the region. The latest figure indicates that New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold nearly 465,000 units during its second week of availability in Japan.

    @666, while i disagree that someone should know, because i think your average or even hardcore gamer cares about graphics, story etc. not who was making cards in the 1880s

    but i agree its good that we have what we have, i cant imagine growing up earlier where i would think just having a radio is a blessing

    it is rather common knowledge on anyone that likes games that Nintendo's been around for a long time. I'm not a fanboy, didn't care too much for them after the Cube, but they have done something right, and they do have the longest history out of the three. But i do agree with you bashing Capitalthought, its kinda silly to be a fanboy to one system, i like the competition that having three system's does, it has all three of their companies step up and make the best product they can. I had a PS2 and a Cube last gen and a 360 this one, it seemed the logical choice for the type of gamer i am. It's pointless to say that one's better then the other, cause its all in that person's perspective.

    Can't we all just be grateful that we live in this generation and get to experience these games?

    Play the f'n games or don't. Who cares who sells what and who doesn't- none of you have any stake in it, unless you invest in stocks or something. judging all this stuff is just so subjective anyways, and fanboys of anything just make me embarrassed to even play games. if you like a game, play it, if that means you have to buy more than one console, so be it. If you can t afford more than one, dont be insecure about it. I think we would all want all 3 consoles, I know I do, then I could play any game I wanted, instead of acting like I dont care. The truth is, none of those corporations care for any of you, thats what makes them corporal. They have obligations to shareholders, not fanboys. Who knows, maybe the next Playstation and xbox wont even be more advanced than this gen, maybe they will cater to the likes of the Wii demographic. It wouldn't surprise me a bit. All you have to do is follow the money. ..and if you do follow the money, you will find Nintendo, and the funny thing is, they have always been there at that very pile of money. Coincidence? Not likely. Now, I am not tied emotionally to Nintendo (or any other corporation), I dont even own a Wii, I play Xbox 360, but you have to admire what they do, and that is selling video games. If you feel burned , thats your own fault for being naive and having an unhealthy desire to belong to something, like a ignorant group of "fanboys." It's desperate.

    @capital how am i outright wrong, i never stated exactly how long nintendo existed, merely that they havent existed for millions of years, 120 years of so is not a few million

    additionally they really werent very successful as a company till the video game era either

    lastly sony has been a player for at least as long as nintendo, they were founded a year after world war 2, nintendo didnt become terribly successful until at least the 60s later

    o and one other, i honestly dont think anyone knows that, especially the fanbase that nintendo themselves targets, id imagine maybe only 1 out of 100-500 people who own a wii would know that, its something that you only know as a fanboy; fanboys, a fanbase nintendo cast aside for families

    -its nice to see you support a company that doesnt even really care if you continue to exist or not

    Go back to school and read a history book and you will see that Nintendo has been here since the early 1900's. Long before they made video games, they made playing cards. Any true gamer would know that. The point is, a company doesn't survive that long without making smart moves, and obviously, they were smarter then X360 and PS3 this generation,

    @kiramasaki...Nintendo has been here for a hundred years, sales of their system dwarf those of Sony's and Microsoft's, very much in the same vein that they did to Sega. All the while Sony was making remarks such as "The next gen doesn't start till we say it does." And when Nintendo outsold X360 which had a year's head start all Microsoft could say was"We are still the top selling "true next-gen" system. With Sony and Microsoft's heads as big as they are, it is no wonder that they are failing. Famous wisdom here and I am giving it to you for free "Pride comes before a fall" One needs no more evidence then the sales.

    @Tdawg2594....if the Mario Kart games weren't fun, I would agree with you, but they are fun. Will be suprised if God of War 3 is a top seller for two years in a row. Having said that, your last comment about how the only three things and nothing else to warrant the purchase of a Wii truly exposes how little you know about the system.

    TO say something Mario is a good franchise but there are a lot of games with Mario that is a bit to much. I understand he is the face of Nintendo,but Nintendo milks him out dry!!!! Its like Sony making god of war racing games like seriously ??? And to be honest this generation Sony made the most brand new ip games look at infamous,mag,resistance,uncharted,little big planet,heavy rain,mag,Demon Souls Sony is playing it smart they are getting fans into new games. When the PS4 comes out sales will go through the roof because Sony is branching out from casual to hardcore. Im not against Nintendo but they have 3 main faces Zelda,Mario and,Metroid thats it nothing else for people to buy the console i'll even throw in Pokemon if you guys want.

    you didn't take my entire post in to context. I said they
    are trivial because they are often a lazy attempt at a particular genre, while justifying the game by just pasting
    the mario badge on it. Don't get me wrong the mario core
    games where mario is a platformer is nice. but there has been
    over 140 games made on mario! 6 of which were just in this
    year alone! So you don't think that comes across as over
    milking one fantasy setting for you? As for Halo, it was
    simply about completing the trilogy.It was about expanding the story and the gameplay started by it's first game. You can't criticize that since it would have been a failure for the sequels to be entirely different genres. Imagine halo 2 being a RTS and Halo 3 being a RPG. A trilogy requires consistency. but I mean they did make spinoffs on another genre with Halo wars.
    Same can't be said about other popular FPS series like
    call of duty. again I'm not saying Mario sucks or something.
    Just that it's massively over used. If 140+ games based on
    one set of characters isn't milking then what is?

    will they be talking about? Far as I'm aware Mario games
    don't aim at complex story or story settings in their games.

    lol, @ ayumi if you say sony did nothing for gaming then the same can be said about Nintendo, man Atari should sue them as they were one of the original grandfathers to start establish gaming

    sony copies, what the hell does sony copy exactly, perhaps nintendos need to put out consoles that are dated before they are even designed, pulling the plug on these consoles within a couple of years, i know sony copies nintendos idea to put out the same game on a new system, slap on some lame title like like wii mote controls exclusive version and put it on the market

    look lady, i like rpgs, nintendo once did too, but then said xxxx that, sony has always supported rpgs and thats why i like them, i would also like the xbox which has decent rpg support, but they cant make a xxxxxxx system that wont die on me

    i look forward to the day when nintendo is sitting on the sidelines with atari and sega reminiscing about the good old days while churning out games for sony and microsoft - btw sega from the saturn on has been a superior company to Nintendo and the dreamcast maybe the most underrated system

    btw sony and microsoft are going nowhere, they are conglomerates, ie they make other products, so they can afford some down years in their gaming; as soon as nintendos luck runs out they are xxxxed, they have all their eggs in the gaming basket, they wont last

    So Wand is copying Wiimote, but Natal isn't PS2 EyeToy/PS Eye? You're confusing me. Even the dual analog came originally from the PS1. Face it, every company copies each others' to make the gaming improved. The Wand (controller) is necessary if you want to play hardcore games infront of a camera (PS Eye). They wanted to let people play hardcore games in motion controlling, tell me how else they could've done so without a controller? Changing weapons in a game, turning 180 degrees in a game and even moving is difficult infront of a camera if you don't have a controller with it, you're hopefully aware of this.

    Mario has appeared in ace RPG's (Paper Mario) fantastic racing games (Mario Kart) and you think they are trivial differences? Yet Halo in your eyes(which had only one different genre under its belt) is better? I don't think so. Now dont get me wrong, ive nothing against Halo, although aside from the first game I thought the next 2 were average, but Mario has had more diverse games, and more importantly, better games. People will not be talking about Halo in 20 years time, they will however, still be talking about Mario.

    anyway the differences are trivial because said games are repetitive with little game content. It's just a very lazy attempt at a sport title,with the mario badge pasted over.
    also criticizing Halo for being repetitive is actually a bit of a void point. It's a trilogy for a FPS game. So it's unrealistic to expect the sequels to be of different genres. and halo gave us a neat strategy game spinoff anyway. Like I said there's
    only been 5 games in total since 2001. The games have
    quality graphics and a huge online component. so it takes time
    to make them. Given more time who knows what
    other creative projects Bungie might come up with?
    mario had 140+ attempts at making games. so in comparison
    Bungie is still getting warmed up.lol.

It's bad to focus all your energies on one thing, Nintendo, is not one thing, your debate is assuming that Nintendo is only Mario, and not even Mario, is only Mario. Bungie is only Halo, and...Oni. Oni for god's sake. You EVER play that game? The battery on my Mac is getting low, and the Nuclear weapon summit on my state's education network does more for my brain than debating with a Halo fanboy over Mario's obviously more robust gaming resume'.     Let's see... First off whining about all the users insulting Nintendo when you're DOING the exact same to Sony. Like other's have already mentioned in the article, all 3 companies copy off one another. Nintnendough may be known for innovation, but they weren't the first ones to create consoles, controllers, cartridges, memory cards or motion sensing.

    And AGAIN, Nintendo is responsible for the creation of the PlayStation brand. Shouldn't that mean you hate them too for all the carnage Sony caused over 2 generations? Don't give me that about M$, they stuffed 360's down the throats of a nation they could care less about. I mean didn't they say they who needs Japan?

    @Great_Ragnarok Mario plays golf, basketball, soccer, tennis, shoots fireballs, flies, jumps, double jumps, triple jumps, summersaults, summersault backflips, races, parties, and occasionally role-plays You'll never see a futuristic marine do any of those things and be involved in any more than 1 or 2 genres. Mario may have been milked like a cow, but he's got more teets than any freakin cow I've ever heard of. Bungie's milk is gettin' a bit sour, and bland, to say the least. Look, I think Halo is quality software for WHAT IT IS, but I think they are capable of more, if not better things, and it's lame to see one company do just one thing.

    just in 2009 there were 8 mario games in total!!!
    compare that to Halo, we have Halo 1,2,3, halo wars, ODST.
    5 in total. and 6 when reach comes out. You also have to take note that Halo actually contains a pretty rich scifi universe with 3 factions and one super ancient halo building race. So there's a lot of potential for bungie to explore. The same can't be said of Mario. btw the total games with mario is close to141!! so yes it is indeed amazing how mario can be milked.

    Actuly Tales of Vesperia made the 360 Sell out in Japan, when the game got released! So if you like Anime and RPG's pick the game up! its easly one of the best RPG's ive played in years!

    I like the way microsoft had the courage to market there console in japan even when they knew they had no chance at all. They wasted billions of dollars in my native country and you know something ,I respect there courage. The 360 has bombed there but guess what microsoft just won't quit. There putting even more billions behind natal even though this gen is almost over and they don't care how much money they throw down the tubes because they have the one thing most companies don't have in this market- courage.

    @LunaDravo Dude, I'm die-hard Sony, and Nintendo, and Sega. I love the sound of a PS4, tho Sony stated the PS3 MIGHT be their last system, and the PS9 commercial was just insane radness at the time, and was everything marketing (for anything) TO THIS DAY should be. I find it appalling the lack of videogame commercials these days, except for the lame ones that everyone is already going to go out and buy. And I must disagree about Sony and Microsoft's quality above Nintendo's, as all of Nintendo's first party software (save MarioParty, they don't make it) is way above that of Sony's, and Microsoft's. Metroid Prime Trilogy has more quality and less glitches than Sony's new frontrunner God of War, (which I do love BTW) tho KZ2 and LBP are up there, and I just don't care about Microsoft, except for my XP OS, and making sure my copies of Alice, Tron, Max Payne, Sim City, and Civilization work, and work well. Nintendo's quality is outstanding, simply, in my opinion, above the rest. @ayumi_miyazaki You are nuts.

    I think that until games change (not the same game play, better mechanics, or more co-op games) that Japan and the numbers of gamers in general will decline.

    maybe you didnt want it but when ps3 was $500, it was one of the cheapest blu-ray players around and many people bought it for that reason. (also why ps3 games dont sell as well......because its a standalone media player, not only a console)

    plus it achieved 40 players online at launch, the first consoles to do that.
    it also tought microsoft that 54 was a larger number than 30 and hence HD-DVD died out.

    and guess where the cell processor came from?
    specially designed for ps3, also helping prosecuting pedophiles, diagnosing disease (through folding @ home), used in schools to educate, helping the US airforce with their research.

    then we look what nintendo and xbox have done........nothing.
    why?
    because their not willing to sacrifice $36 or however much it is per unit sony are loosing to help so many people around the world as well as providing first class gaming with some of the best exclusives ever released.

    if they publish articles on sales they might as well publish all the other financial data of the games companies.

    sales has nothing to do with games........why dont they do more reviews and features instead.

    all this does is add flame to the console war even though sales dont prove the quality of a console or games in any way at all.

    Yeah and Sony stabbed Nintendo in the back in return and in 2005 they put out a tech demo and claimed it was game footage when it was CG. In 2006 Sony claimed that motion sensing technology was new and released a $500 console even though their fans told them they didnt want it. In 2009 Sony released the PSP Go even though PS fans said they didnt want it.

    I was expecting japan to at least reach the 5 million mark, but the wiis sales are a little too low. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a few years back I heard the japanese culture in general has lost interest in games.

    If I judged a console by what decisions the manufacture makes, I wouldn't buy a playstation 3 and pledge my loyalty strictly towards microsoft. Since I'm not loyal compared to 38% of users on this site I own a playstation 3 and wii.

    I'd like to see some real numbers of what games japanese gamers buy for the wii, and see if it matches the same audience as in north america. Because over here, games with complexity are overshadowed.

Plus as much as I love nintendo, I love sega too and I understand nintendo had a small part in sega's demise but history doesn't lie sony' hype of the ps2 was the main factor of sega's death. This is why I hate sony, you ashed why so I answered why. @microsoft fans

    I've been here for about 3 months and to be honest, you guys are fantastic. And this is coming from a nintendo fan, I hardly ever here you guys bash the wii or ps3. I think I will buy a 360 for my boyfriend for xmas. At least its not a console that copies nintendo. Plus the online is superb; subarashii; fantastic; fun; etc. Etc. Etc.
