Dead Space 2 drifting onto X360, PS3, PC

EA and Visceral Games confirm new installment in survival horror shooter will follow original game protagonist, light on additional details.

Two weeks after Dead Space landed to glowing critical praise in 2008, EA was already talking about a sequel. Speaking to Variety, then-Visceral Games general manager Glenn Schofield said that a follow-up would be predicated on the sales results of the original. Further evidence of a follow-up surfaced in September, when EA revealed through a job listing that development on a Dead Space "sequel" would begin "in the next few months."

Today, EA made Dead Space 2 official, announcing that the game would see release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Oddly, the publisher provided no time frame for when Dead Space 2 will be released. EA's opacity on the release date is consistent with statements made in October, when the publisher refuted a Reuters report indicating that the game would be out sometime in 2010.

EA was equally cagey on what gamers can expect from Dead Space 2. The game will again follow Isaac Clarke, better known as the primary protagonist from the original. EA didn't offer much by way of plot details, saying only that Clarke will again engage with the zombielike necromorphs. The publisher promises to deliver new weapons, characters, and environments in the Dead Space sequel.

Dead Space 2 isn't EA's only expansion to the original survivor horror shooter. The publisher collaborated with Starz Media on the animated feature film Dead Space: Downfall in 2009. In July, Variety reported that a live-action adaption of the game is also in development, with Eagle Eye helmer D.J. Caruso attached to direct. EA released the Wii-exclusive on-rails shooter Dead Space: Extraction in September, a game that sold fewer than 9,300 units upon its debut.

This game will be worth the wait, I for one am really looking forward to it. Dead Space was the best survival thriller to date, with big levels, heavy upgrades and a smashing story to boot! Great news.

The original Dead Space was just...amazing. The atmosphere, the environments, the monsters, everything was simply beautiful. Dead Space 2 will probably not be as scary as the first one because you will obviously be familiar with the elements from the first game. Still though, if they could expand and improve on most of the things the first game had offered, then Dead Space 2 would be successful in my eyes, regardless of whether it turns out to be scarier than the first one, or not. Let's all cross our fingers and hope that this sequel is at the very least as good as it's predecessor!

Dead Space was the most fun I'd had with a horror game in a while, so I'm very excited to pick up the sequel when it comes out. Dismemberment FTW!

Dead space was pretty perfect in terms of gameplay. So as long as the story is good (dun rinse and repeat from 1 of course), i think EA will get themselves another bestseller.

As for the movie, NO game should ever be adapted to a movie. The way of presenting story in game and movie is totally different. That's why so many game movies suck.

I hope the next Dead Space doesn't suffer the "sequel sydrome" where the sequel sucks.. I hope they improve and add more features to the great game Dead Space, like what AC2 did.

About the movie, David Fincher could work wonders with this. Even though Alien 3 sucked, I think he could totally pull it off with Dead Space. It's a shame about the direction they've chosen to go in with the movie.

Really? I actually thought it was pretty lengthy, compared to most other games released over the past couple years.

Crimson_xWolfx. resident evil 5 is qaulity and that has co op. also left 4 dead. A lot of the top games are co op. co op is a good thing. it does not make a horror game any less of a horror game. While i don't see dead space being co op it would be a good thing if it was. i know i enjoyed completing professional mode of resident evil 5 with my cousin.

Ok, my first impressions on this review:
    1. Dead Space 2 is fact without a fixed due date.
    2. The sequel will expand on the success of the predecessor. (No innovation results in a lower GS review)
    3. A Movie with the director of Eagle Eye... that movie IMO was horribly ridiculous. Borderline stupid... and having Vic Mackie as the Sec.Def. made President by a Computer... worse. The Shield was the best cop show out there.
    4. Hasn't anyone already figured out that selling M games in the Wii is a bad move in general. These games are appreciated by the Hard Core videoaudience that still supports console PS/XB/PC systems.

Yeah, I agree Ownage. This is gonna get banned because of that useless old piece of $!#@ attorney imbecile. Just get a PlayAsia account, buy the US version and it will be at your doorstep in less than a week. I might just do that for safety even if the Oz version is released coz I don't trust the OFLC ever again after what they did with Grand Theft 4 and especially OMG friggen L4D2.

Yeah right, this will be another banned game in Aus the way we're going. Because we're all immature and aren't allowed to play video games, Isn't that right Mr. Atkinson?

dead space is excellent! i'll buy ds2 on DAY ONE! it ranks at no 3 on my favs, the 1st and 2nd being ac2 and mass effect.

there's nothings much to improve really on the 1st game. at most, they just have to refine the camera, and make the graphics better in some parts (less jaggies and sharper shadows). might be nice if it uses the euphoria animation as well.

Dead Space was such an excellent game I sometimes worry they won't be able to pull of such a stunning success twice in a row. But as long as they get the time they need to make this game right and EA doesn't force them to rush it I think it can be just as great as the last one. At the very least, I'm glad they're making a sequel, I was worried that when EA was getting rid of a lot of their studios that Visceral might have been on the chop block.

As for the co-op debate, I side with having no co-op, after all what Dead Space does right is put "horror" back into "survival horror", which is a dying genre these days. There's nothing scary about playing a game co-op with your partner blabbering away into the headset. Games are scariest played alone, late at night, with the lights off, with the surround sound cranked up. The kinds of things that were frightening in the first Dead Space wouldn't work for co-op, partners would be constantly triggering scary sequences without you by running ahead, you wouldn't have to constantly be turning around to check to make sure something wasn't creeping on you if your partner had your back. Also, working on multiplayer features will only take away production time from perfecting the single player campaign. If they're going to make any multiplayer, they should just work on a non-campaign survival mode of some kind.

*SPOILER* I thought Clarke died at the end of Dead Space? Or am I wrong? I loved Dead Space, more than I loved RE5 and I'm a die hard Resident Evil fan, I hope they don't screw the sequel up...

Yet again I must emphasize the original lead devs/vets of the Dead Space 'crew' have left EA for Activision.

These two were the guys that originally came up with the concept for Dead Space and lead development.

    @jtthegame316

Sure, co-op is a nice touch to a game but for one such as this.. well it'd be better off without it. If you add co-op, you basically take the horror feel away, because then you have someone with you the whole time. It's like I just added multiplayer, which I dearly hope they do not because that will be the end of this game. If I added multiplayer, then the games ruined entirely because focusing on both is just a tedious task and usually doesn't come out well. Since you have to take away some elements from one or the other, and that will destroy the campaign mode completely, because the multiplayer added in would take away key elements that make this game scary as hell or just an extremely thrilling story.

    @ naryanrobinson,

Mario & Zelda have been around almost 30 years, and you think they're NOW going to become old? They're probably more popular now than when you were a kid. Nevertheless, this should be a good game. I just hope they don't fall into the usual pitfalls when it comes to sequels where it loses quality for the "bigger is better" approach.

  • MarcusVOG

    Posted Dec 8, 2009 2:41 pm GMT

    NA NA NA!

No Co-Op! How many games, nowadays, have been destroied by crappy co-op or multiplayers...

If you are gonna do a co-op for Dead Space, try to keep the atmosphere, which is almost impossible, the terros as thrills the payers feels, which will also be impossible, and make it have a good plot, which is pretty possible if you know how to do it.

    That's pretty much why I don't wanna co-op...

    Still, this game ROCKS!
