Prince of Persia to rule May 2010

Ubisoft announces The Forgotten Sands, a return to Sands of Time storyline; will be released alongside upcoming film adaptation next spring.

One month after unconfirmed reports indicated that a new Prince of Persia game was in the works, Ubisoft has made it official. The French publisher announced today that next May it will ship Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for unspecified consoles and handhelds. Though short on specifics, the announcement did reveal that the game will mark a return to the storyline that began with the successful 2003 relaunch of the series, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands' release date and story were not chosen at random. The game will be released the same month as the big-budget film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, based on the game of the same name. The reportedly $200 million adaptation premieres May 28 in the US and May 27 in the UK and is being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean) and directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco). Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the film--the effects-packed trailer for which can be seen below--was cowritten by Jordan Mechner, who created the first Prince of Persia game in 1989.

Though Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is being bankrolled and distributed by Walt Disney Films, Ubisoft is also banking on its success. Speaking at the BMO Capital Markets 17th Annual Digital Entertainment Conference earlier this month, Yves Guillemot said that the Jake Gyllenhaal-led action film franchise could be more lucrative than Disney's Pirates trilogy.

"What we hear is that it could be maybe stronger than Pirates, which did $2.7 billion dollars," Guillemot said as part of his presentation to analysts and investors. "I think this will really help our brand to become a major brand in this industry."

Ubisoft has expressed its desire to get into feature film production and has laid the groundwork by buying the Tom Clancy brand and Hybride, the effects studio behind Watchmen and 300. Earlier this month, it released a self-produced live-action short inspired by its recent hit Assassin's Creed II.

    I really think the movie is going to suck. I mean, DISNEY?!

    But I am excited for the game, which I heard was coming March 2011.

    PoP is some REAL SH!T lolz they had a "sex" scene for god sakes lol i doubt disney can handle such a game let alone make a movie outa it >.> and it betta have that same action and not just hit and he falls down NO! prince cut people in half and i hope thats what he does in the movie

    I can bet you this movie is going to suck. Did you see which studio is doing the movie???. It's friggin Disney..Mickey mouse kingdom and we all know Disney is all about clean fun and for kids so with knowing all this , pop movie is going to suckkkkkk!!!. Who's with me on dat????

    I'm still waiting on the sequel to the last Prince of Persia. As far as the movie, it looks like it will be a big success this coming summer. I'm sure the game will be good.

    It\s sequel not prequel so it's not based on movie it's sequel to Sands Of Time Trilogy so it must be good but i also want to Ubisoft continue PEOP 4 because i\m still intrigued what happened to new prince in the end in DLC he died or what happened to him.

    God I hope they make another PoP, the last one left on just a cliff-hanger and I thought Elika was hands-down one of the best, if not the best AI characters in a video game to date. I found myself really caring about her, much more than I ever thought I'd care about pixels on the screen.

    the older POP was much better than the new one. but I cant say i didnt like the new one at all. I really want to know what happens next with the new one, though.

    Although i cannot guarantee whether the game will be as good as SOT Trilogy Series which was one of the best series Last Gen, i can definitely say it will be much better than the new Prince Of Poop 2008.

    Actually that's kinda cheap if you think they finished the series. Now a movie's coming for the games and they are making the game again. I could understand it if the game was 30 years old or something. You know I'm expecting a movie called Forgotten Sands for this game then a new game for the new movie... The formula to make money forever...

    I love PoP, and I want the movie to do well so I am not going to hate. Lets just hope it has a more realistic atmosphere of Persia than what they did in warrior within, which was crap. Also Jake's accent is solid, and that's really what matters with the prince anyway. His look was already so so in the game so who gives. Also I hope the game is what the sequels to Sands of time should have been.

    ubisoft should do like god of war here and release a prince of persia collection pack of the first 3 games from the trilogy redone in hd. i played the first sands of time, but never got a chance to play through the 2 following games. would be nice to have it brought back to this generation.. especially as a way to refresh memories for the new game.

    original prince of person (from 1989) is still my favorite though =)

    alfred66, I agree. It's not that Jake Gyllenhaal is bad actor--he did a great job in Jarhead--it's that he's nowhere close to being Persian. For those of you who don't know, Persia was what is today known as Iran. Jake Gyllenhaal's family descendants primarily came from Swedin.

    I want a sequel to the last PoP. It had a Warrior Within style ending, which led me to believe that a sequel was guarenteed. I don't care if this one they're speaking of is that direct sequel, just as long as they do sooner or later make one.

    friggin SWEET!!! dont care what anyone says. this movie seems awesome, and eventhough Disney is behind this movie. i have faith in them because PotC(Pirates of the Caribbean) was friggin awesome... and i must say that they did a hell of a job considering the theme and setting, and they manage to great such a good movie without any serious violence with out ruining the quality of the movie. hopefully THAT is able to transition to PoP. if so i'm all aboard. =D

    I can't wait to see the movie, play the new game, AND hope they continue both Prince of Persia story lines. Different Princes, different stories, different game mechanics = WIN! The more quality variants the better I say.

    hotbodyboy_2006 the PoP2008 was not a downright failure, it won the best visual award in 2009; and it deserved it. yes the no consequence part of the game wasn't ubisoft's best, but some ppl care about story and gameplay over gore and brute force

    Umm . . . Prince of Persia came long before Assassin's Creed. It was actually Sands Of Time on the PS2 that introduced free-running and parkour to the gaming industry, along with scaling heights and perching on ledges. So next time, do your homework and gain a broader education of videogames before you play the ignorant age-old card "(Insert Game Here) looks just like (Insert Game Here)."

    I love the Prince of Persia games, but I'm really skeptical of this movie. So though I don't have high expections for the movie, I still really hope that it at least exceeds what little expectations I do have. On the other hand, this "new" game will probably be just another low-budget licensed tie-in game that is nothing like previous Prince of Persia games.
