Dark Void film rights bought, game delayed a week

Capcom's jetpack action game pushed back as publisher announces big-screen partnership with Brad Pitt's production company.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li may have taken a beating worthy of Miguel Cotto at the box office, but Capcom isn't letting that derail its latest Hollywood push. Today the publisher announced that it has reached an agreement with Reliance Big Entertainment and Plan B Entertainment--the production company of Brad Pitt--for the film rights to Capcom's upcoming Dark Void.

The publisher said the game is being adapted as "a sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt." Plan B has produced a number of hit films, including The Departed, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which saw Pitt in the role of the doomed gunslinger. It is also producing the upcoming version of Wanted author Mark Millar's graphic novel Kick-Ass, due out next year.

Reliance Big Entertainment owns Indian movie studio Big Pictures but has a history of collaborating with Western stars' film production efforts. The company touts a history working with Nicolas Cage's Saturn Films, Tom Hanks' Playtone Productions, George Clooney's Smokehouse Productions, and more.

The sci-fi world of Dark Void sees humankind locked in combat with The Watchers, an alien race banished by humanity to an alternate universe after its members developed superpowers. Players will step into the role of Will, a cargo pilot who joins a resistance movement against The Watchers, aided by a jetpack and weaponry designed by Nikola Tesla.

In revealing the film rights deal, Capcom also confirmed it had pushed back the Dark Void game's launch date by a week. Dark Void is now set for a January 19 North American launch on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with a European debut to follow January 22.

Dark Void isn't Capcom's only film project in the works. The company is also working to bring Lost Planet to theaters and has plans for more installments in the Resident Evil franchise.

    I would like a Dark Void movie; I thought it has a very original story, it's a very good game, and imo some people are complaining about all of this just because they are comparing it to Mass Effect, even though they are two very differents games, beyond any comparisson. At a first point they seems to has something in common indeed, but when you play them, you change your mind.

    Dark Void movie?!?! HELL NO! The story was as bland as a...a, hot towel! And a movie would be a very bad idea!

    Game movies never work out. I just hope that the game will be better then the movie. I already reserved this game, but they're delaying it constantly is making me lose interest.

    Maybe I have the wrong attitude here, but I don't mind them buyin rights before they see if the game is any good. I mean heck, if the game is good it doesn't mean the movie will be, and if the game is bad it doesn't mean the movie will be. Heh, though it'll certainly put off a few people if the game bombs w/o the excuse of having to hit some movie release deadline.

    IMHO the concept is really cool even if the game turns out not to be very good, the concept for the story is actually quite interesting and could be really good as a movie, if done by top talent.

    I have an open mind about them making this game into a movie. I still live in hope that one day someone write a decent script and get some decent actors on screen, and turn out something good.

    Anyway, I'm still looking forward to the game. The setting and action looks good to me.

    meh if its anything like the resident evil movies it will just be a block for a director to make his own characters and story under a banner name that helps him sell it.

    Capcom is a good company. They create new IPs as well as make good sequels. not like some other (i'm looking at you Activision. stop making ... Hero games and stop milking CoD franchise)

    a movie? sounds like fun, but to me it sounds like a low budget movie... and if the movie is supposed to come out in January, the movie wont be worked on that long.. so i wonder if it will be worth watching.

    Christ the game hasn't even come out yet and they are already thinking of ruining it with a movie!! Not only that but of all the production companies why Brad Pitts? I mean it's as if they are trying to make the worst movie possible

    No thanks, I saw the Rocketeer 20 years ago, and haven't needed to see a jet pack centered movie since. I feel like this whole movie announcement is just a ploy to build PR for a bland B title game.

    I'm thinking maybe the two (game release pushed back and movie rights) are unrelated. At best this movie is in pre-pre-production. I can't imagine any scenario that would mean pushing the game back, especially considering this is going the opposite direction of usual movie-game tie-ins.

    Some idiot must've gone down the list and thumbs-downed everyone once, because if you notice every single comment has at least -1 as of writing this.

    Second, anybody who thinks this isn't a horrible idea and a laughable attempt at a movie has never seen a video game movie. Especially not the ones lately. This is the dumbest news I've ever heard. Buying the rights to make a movie on something that hasn't been released and pushing the game back a week for it? Ludicrous.

    Are you kidding me? Is Hollywood so lazy and drained of creativity that they are resorting to buying the rights to make films based on games that aren't even out yet?! Dark Void looks fun, but for all we know it might totally suck. Shouldn't they wait until the game has an actual fanbase playing it before yelling "OMFG MOVIE RIGHTS!!"

    Better yet, don't wait. Lets just not make a movie based on it in the first place. I have long since given up on the idea of a game movie that is worth the $7 + snacks admission price.

    Why Dark Void? Capcom has had better franchises fail on the big screen. If they can't get a live action Street Fighter or Resident Evil to work, why would they bother trying with this random new I.P.?
