Uncharted 2 maps out 1 million sales

Sony and Naughty Dog's top-rated PS3-exclusive action adventure goes platinum in global sales within one month of launch.

The industry stat-tracking NPD Group is expected to release its October US retail sales report later today, and a handful of analysts have already gone on record saying that they don't expect the numbers to be particularly good. However, Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich believes one bright spot was Sony and Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, with the analyst predicting that the game led US software sales on the month with 600,000 units sold.

That prediction now seems prescient. Speaking at the BMO Capital Markets 17th Annual Digital Entertainment Conference today, Sony Computer Entertainment's senior VP of strategic business development, Phil Rosenberg, confirmed that Uncharted 2 has broached the 1 million unit mark in global sales through the end of last week. The PlayStation 3 exclusive received glowing critical praise upon its October 13 debut.

"Uncharted 2 has become the highest rated current exclusive action adventure game on any platform with a Metacritic score of 96," said Rosenberg. "It's the second highest rated PS3 game ever. We've already sold over a million copies through last week in just a couple weeks on the market."

Naughty Dog's latest action adventure comes at a fortuitous time in the PS3's life cycle. Following Sony's introduction of the PS3 Slim at the $299 price point in late August, Sony said console sales had surged from 2.4 million during the July-September quarter in 2008 to 3.2 million for the same period in 2009.

Well, that's no surprise really. There are over 10 million new PS3 gamers since that last Uncharted game was released. Of course the numbers are going to go up. I'm still thinking about getting the 320GB bundle for $299. That's a good deal.

Uncharted 2 is simply amazing. I loved the first game and this one was even better. The animation, storytelling, and graphics are the best I have seen so far this generation. The multiplayer is a blast as well. This game is the main reason I love my PS3. I didn't think I would like any game better than Gears of War, but I think Uncharted 2 is my new favorite. Way to go Naughty Dog.

Probably in my top 10 games of all time! It is sad that the PS3 doesn't have as big of an installed user base to be able to enjoy this great game...

No, you don't need to play the first game before the second. There are a few jokes in the game those are only understandable if you've played the first game, but even that lies in the minority of the jokes. I'd still recommend playing the first one, seeing it's an UNCHARTED -game anyways, if you don't want to play the first game, you can always just watch the playthrought of someone else's on YouTube for example.

do you have to have played the first one to get what is going on in this one? if i get money or something for xmas (after getting left4dead2 and assassins creed 2) i was thinking about picking this up but if i wont understand the story or why im doing what im doing in the game then it doesnt seem worth it.

Well MW2 sells more and faster because it's a multi platform title and people only really buy the game for online. Uncharted 2 is a great title personally I think it's the best title that was released this year and Naughty Dog have done a good job creating it. Uncharted 2 was worth full price in my opinion the single player was great the level designs were amazing. The online on Uncharted 2 is fun I like that the developers even play it online can't wait for the new maps. The amount of time and effort that Naughty Dog put into this game has payed off.

Not bad, but Halo 3: ODST sold 2.5 million copies than that on their first two weeks that it's been out, & COD: MW2 sold 4.7 Million copies on their first day.

But that's still pretty good, though.

Well i havent played this amazing title yet and the reason is because i have no money left for this game due to Modern Warfare 2. This is probably one of the reasons ND isnt getting the money they deserve. Definately will be picking up a copy later. Theres probably a lot of people like me.

Also another reason why i never payed attention to U2 before its stunning reviews was because the first game didnt score that high and most of the time a **** first game leads to a **** sequel. but thats not the case for Uncharted....... I generally dont play games that score below 8.5 because my taste for games is quite similar to Gamespot.

Yeah guys don't listen to the PS3 haters, they are wasting their time. Uncharted is an awesome game, still not completed it yet as I have just moved house and only just got hooked up again! Had an excellent go online too, is unbelievably fun online even with randoms). Great stuuf naughty dog, hope some new maps and (further down the line) a sequel appears!

Wow thats great but kinda overshadowed by modern warfare 2. I personnally think that uncharted 2 is better because the developers actually made the single player campaign brilliant unlike all the call of duty games. Call of duty relies on the public more to play the multiplayer but still is also a stellar game. I still would go for uncharted though.

In the generic sense, yes, but regardless of what else it is, it's still an article about a game that is PS3 exclusive, so it is more of a PS3/U2 article than anything else (click on the PS3 tab, PS3 related articles appear. Woah, isn't that sweet or what?).

Or the fact that MW2 already has had an established fanbase since the first few CODs, and FPS games seem to be really popular nowadays. Other factors can play into sales, but the one thing that really bugs me is how some people (like you) try to act like sales makes the game, when it doesn't. No one should care about sales except the companies that make the games. As for replay value, U2's campaign is far more engaging and developed than MW2's, so I'll probably play the campaign many more times even if there isn't much to unlock, but that's just me.

It's not that people like MW2 more. It's that there's more people that like MW2. Big difference.

We should all make a collect and buy Salarian a PS3 so he will stop getting so despaired, he's obsessed with this console. I don't understand you, you keep saying how XBox is superior and has better graphics, you even have contacts with important people at Square ( yeah he knows from a reliable source that FF versus is coming to XBOX and is the superior version) and yet you keep spending your time giving comments on a game you never played ( you wished) on a console you don't have and think little about it, and you even make reviews about PS3 games even without having played them. Man you really have some issues here. If you regret your purchase sell your XBOX and buy the PS3.

Good sales, but with this much hype 1 million in one month just isn't good enough. Sony should have released this game when no other hyped games were on the horizon such as Modern warfare 2 which has as expected sold a ton.

I really think people need to remember that although Gamespot has different tabs for each console, every article is a part of the "Gamespot" website.

These articles are not classified as "PS3" or "Xbox 360" or "Wii" articles. All of these articles are "Gamespot" articles relating to the "videogame" industry.

This article is talking about "sales" of a particular game. This time the game is a PS3 game, which means the sales will be compared to other PS3 games, including multiplatform games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 that have sold far better than Uncharted. There is nothing wrong with making this type comment; in fact, this is obviously the entire reason why Gamespot posted this article.

I saw this article on the Home tab of the website. I am personally intrigued by the fact that Uncharted 2 sold only half a million units in October and took a month to reach 1 Million. The game received a lot of hype, but apparently a "rental" was enough for people who might have been interested in Uncharted 2. I really think the reason for this is because Uncharted is a game series with a reputation for being able to be beaten in a very short time period with less replay value than other games such as Call of Duty.

When you consider that games like Grand Theft Auto 4, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Gears of War, Halo, and Splinter Cell sell so much faster, it really is an intriguing fact.

I personally think it may not have been a smart move to release Uncharted in the same month as Modern Warfare 2. Obviously, people like Modern Warfare 2 a lot more than Uncharted 2, as the huge difference in sales has proven. By releasing Uncharted 2 so close to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, I think Uncharted had the spotlight taken away from it by a much more popular game series. Sony should have launched Uncharted at either an earlier or later period of time, in my opinion.

That's great I hope sales keep up. As much as I'm enjoying MW2 I just think that Uncharted 2 has made the most improvement over its predecessor complete with long addicting campaign and a surprising well built multiplayer.

And this is coming from a neutral so don't hate.

    @wallywalIas:

I want to make a few things clear:

    * This article is on the "Gamespot" website.

    * This article was on the Home Page of the "Gamespot" website.

    * This article is absolute not considered part of a "PS3 section"

    * You need to realize that when the PS3 is criticized by neutral gamers, they are not "trolling" the PS3 "sections."

    * You need to realize that when the PS3 is criticized by netral gamers, they are simply "reading" the "Gamespot" website and offering opinions

    * This article is about "sales." I simply pointed out that Killzone 2 was and is a disappointment for sales. Gamespot pointed out that Killzone 2 was on the market for less than three months and it was already being outsold each month by games that had been on the market for 21 months. Obviously, this is disappointing.

    @SalarianChemist

How does 2 million in sales for a platform exclusive become a failure in sales? Killzone 2 is still selling pretty well and now Uncharted 2 is doing the same. Also, where do you come off saying is that U2 is maybe worth a rental? It has all the characteristics you mentioned in a good game: Online Competitive, Online Co-Op, and a well done Single Player story with plenty of OMG moments.

Please stop trolling the PS3 section if you're just going to trash on games that you have no idea how they really play.

Saying this is Tomb Raider only with a male lead is far too simplistic to be true. It's more akin to a Clive Cussler Dirk Pitt novel.
