Borderlands 2 a 'no-brainer' - Gearbox

Creative director Mike Neumann says role-playing shooter's reception has all but assured there will be a sequel; 2K touts upcoming DLC.

Before Borderlands' October 20 release, some analysts were openly speculating the new IP wouldn't find its footing before being crushed at retail by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Now, though, the game industry's professional prognosticators are pegging the well-reviewed action role-playing game as a hit. Former skeptic Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pacther believes the game sold around 400,000 units in the US in October, with Pacific Crest Securities' Evan Wilson and Electronic Entertainment Design and Research's Jesse Divnich putting the figure at 375,000.

Were any of the analysts' US figures to be replicated in Europe, Borderlands will likely end up with close to 1 million units in total lifetime sales. So it's little wonder, then, that developer Gearbox Software is already musing about a sequel.

"Everyone here [in the UK] loves the franchise, and it seems like the public is really coming back with praise and love," studio creative director Mikey Neumann commented to the British site VG247. "So yeah, if everything makes sense, Borderlands 2 seems like a no-brainer to me."

When asked to expand on Neumann's comments, Gearbox reps declined to comment. However, publisher 2K Games was quick to steer the focus toward expansion plans for the original Borderlands. "We're excited that people are enjoying Borderlands and want to spend even more time with the game, which is why we're releasing downloadable content at the end of this month," a rep said.

On November 24, the first of what Gearbox and 2K promise will be a series of Borderlands expansions will launch on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Titled The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned, it will add a new region, Jakobs Cove, which is overrun by undead opponents and other supernatural variations of creatures from the original game. The add-on to the M for Mature rated original will sell for 800 Microsoft points or $9.99. 2K said details about a PC expansion will be announced soon.

    Borderlands is the only game to fully master the Role Playing Game and shooter experience in one.

    I think that the first thing that Gearbox should look at add for a sequel is different armors for characters. The ability to augment armor and weapon with different effects, i.e corrosive crystals give corrosive damage/resistance. A good pvp system would be really cool. The last thing i would want is more enemy types. also just for fun, more cannon fodder during battles.

    Borderlands 2 hopes: better Gun Generator, 5 classes, Enemy Generator, Quest Generator,Landscape Generator....

    i give Borderlands a 10/10, but wouldnt it be amazing with a quest generator...like seriously never ending quests or enemies...omg i would have a heart attack!

    Love Borderlands. Glad for the DLC and the next installment. Now, wonder why the Gamestop employee tried to talk me out of purchasing Borderlands?

    --As a Gamestop employee I got to tell you this happens a lot. Just like anybody else, everyone at my store has different opinions about different games, since we all have unique tastes in games, favorite genres, etc. So if you come in when I'm working, you'll hear Borderlands is badass, but if you come in when my assistant manager is working, he'll tell you it's nothing special. We may know a lot about games, but we're still people with our own opinions, and they are just opinions!

    Im sorry guys, but people complaining about 'all there is to do except kill creatures, NPC's, collect guns, drive and run around doing missions, upgrading you character (of which there are 3) etc' what exactly do you want?

    @Gruug
    Are you serious?? What a douche...I was the ONLY person in my store to push this game and everybody came back and said they loved it...honestly that guy doesn't deserve to work retail if he tells you NOT to buy an awesome game....I might not have been a fan of CoD MW2 but I never told anyone not to buy it because of my personal opinions...

    Zombies in Borderlands, genius. I just wish there was more to do besides kill NPCs and eachother in Borderlands. To put it quite simply, that is all there is to do.

    Who cares if the story ending wasn't what you wanted or expected? Borderlands isn't about story. It's about treasure hunting, lighting your enemies on fire, and shotguns that shoot rockets. When you've got that much awesome packed in one game, how do you even have the time to worry about story?

    I don't get all the hype for this game, I find it boring. You just get missions, kill creatures/people, make money, then do other missions, no story whatsoever, and the guns all look and feel alike. I kind of like the cartoony graphics though.

    I've read many suggestions for improvements on this board so I thought I'd add my own... it would be better to have one vehicle that can be upgraded and customized, or different kinds of vehicles, and the game should be totally open world like fallout 3: no separation of areas. Finally, a third play through would be great!

    @Cronosfire

    I always check reviews out before I buy any game. Not only on Gamespot because I don't agree with some of their ratings, but on gamerankings.com. I already knew that the ending sucked, but I would've liked to figure out for myself why it was deemed "anti-climatic."

    @dark-wolf12
    that’s a great idea to continue with your characters from the first game. Mass Effect 2 is doing so i hope gearbox will do the same, and add some new ones.

  • dark-wolf12

    Posted Nov 12, 2009 11:17 am GMT

    I wonder if they'll introduce more characters?
    and if you can continue on with your old one...

    But anyway, it's good to see Gearbox supporting it's fans, (sorry PC but you'll be getting some DLC eventually) unlike some other developers out there...

    Oh nice, I like Borderlands I hope they do both! (expansion + sequel)

    I have enjoyed playing Borderlands, and would buy a sequel. However, I hope that some of the small, but annoying issues (fast travel, mapping, quest variety) can be addressed. I really like the game, but it could be a lot better with just a few tweaks. That's what sequels are for, right?

    borderlands 2 sounds great all im saying is in the second one give us more of a story the first was so bleh then you got to the vault then nothing..... so all i want is the story of each character and a little bit more on the planet but other than that i love this game!

    Posted Nov 12, 2009 9:13 am GMT

    I'm so torn with this game. I hear far and wide how fun it is, but I don't like first person shooters. I do however love RPGs. I also don't like hearing that the most fun to be had with the game is with multiplayer because I like to game alone. But it really sounds like a lot of fun.

    I'm going to give the game a rental and if I'm feeling it, I might join the masses, break my personal rule against FPS games and buy it.

    Oh and to all the people in this forum thanks for not bashing on me for expressing my opinion, I'm seeing more and more reason why I should pick this game up from all your answers back toward me @ cruandrew I loved Diablo so if that's the case this is a no brainer.

    @axeman87

    I just might have to give a try, everybody keeps telling me to! Especially if you have some online buddies, which even in the review you can kinda hear it in there voice that playing single player is not the way to go, but to go at it with friends. I do have 80 smackers left on my gamestop card so maybe!

    yeah but hows about fixing the hundreds of bugs first (like the server list) btw cn someone reply to what im about to say for other comps does adding dynamic shadows really kill fps for other pc gamers? if i do it halves fps from a stable 60 to around 30? because other games eg bioshock on full blast can run on full at 60+ so was wondering the game or my pc?

    Posted Nov 12, 2009 7:14 am GMT

    I bought the PC version and there's a framework for a very, very good game here. The one thing Gearbox can do to improve this in the sequel is to ditch Gamespy for PC multiplay support. Using Steam to manage the multiplay aspect would really help this game shine.

  • tomlittle22

    I can't quite put my finger on why, but Borderlands is the most fun I have had with a game in quite a while. Its probably the combat- very fun. And it has possibly the biggest maps I have ever seen.
