Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition to be DLC in West

Extended version of Capcom's best-selling survival horror shooter coming to North America, Europe through Xbox Live, PSN this spring.

Capcom's Resident Evil 5 spread like a raging zombie epidemic upon its launch for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in March, selling more than 5 million units by June. (A PC edition was released in September.) Building on that success, Capcom announced Resident Evil 5: The Alternative Edition at September's Tokyo Game Show for Japan. The boxed product includes all-new content, as well as support for Sony's upcoming camera-based motion controller.

This week, Capcom revealed that RE5: The Alternative Edition will also be coming to North America and Europe this spring, albeit in a different form. After surveying a portion of the Capcom community, the publisher opted to deliver The Alternative Edition as downloadable content through Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. (No mention was made of the PC edition of the game.)

When Capcom announced RE5: The Alternative Edition earlier this year, the publisher said that the PS3 version would support Sony's all-new motion controller, which will also launch this spring. Capcom's North American arm did not indicate whether these controls would also be available in the Western edition, nor did the publisher mention support for Microsoft's Project Natal. Capcom had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Another big change is the addition of a new episode featuring returning franchise heroes Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine. The episode will be based on the flashback scene from the original RE5, where the two characters infiltrate the Spencer estate in Europe.

    "Jill, you were almost a jiffle sandwhich"

    Sorry, I had a flashback! I think this is a good idea, but it seems like it'll be over all to soon. I wish they'd do another remake of RE2 or maybe Nemesis using the technology of RE5. But I'll be getting this DLC content since it's something more than adding a time trial mode...Capcom ftw

    I was hoping that it would be download content rather than a standalone disc. Thanks Capcom, for listening to the fans. I for one will get this even if you have to pay which we most probably will. I mean, we had to pay for the Versus pack, so we'll most probably have to pay for this.

    is it free? probably not.... thats bothers me

    OMG. They listened. They actually listened to the fans. We didn't want to pay for a whole new game, cause that would be rippin us off, so they are givin us the game in dlc. Just like we wanted. I bet us US, was the most vocal. I know because the codin doesn't allow it, but I hope they learned somethin for Ssf4.

    @JOKER677

    At least it's offered via downloadable content unlike Capcom making us buy an all new disc. You gotta give 'em props for that! @Waldkrieger Most Japanese developers do this actually. Since the PS2 days they almost always re-release the game with more content with a price reduction. I'm talking almost all Japanese games man. If the game is popular enough it comes to us, like this, SF4 and all those Koei games.

    so Capcoms going to start releasing games and then second editions with more content?(ie street fight 4 now this)

    I want PS3 and 360 remakes of RE 1 and 2....those were by far the best RE games.

    How about just calling it a DLC name, and not Resident Evil Alternative? That name is completely horrible. Also, CAPCOM seem to try and milk every game they have with DLC, then a year later release a new version of it. They are doing the same thing with SF4. Its rather annoying and ridiculous. Wouldn't is just be simpler to make ONE great game and version, then wait at least 6 months to release DLC and keep it at that? I guess the George Lucas syndrome has infected everyone now. I will add, there better be new achievements, and it better not be a ridiculous price.

    "Again, not certain why this could not be achieved with the forthcoming Super Street Fighter IV content."

    This has already been covered in so many articles and previews in just about every site and magazine, but the main reason why is because the gameplay refinements they wanted to do with the game's balancing system could not be possible with the game's original coding. To achieve what they wanted, they had to rebuild the whole game from the ground up. Hence why they are releasing it as Super Street Fighter IV.

    Alternative Edition? Thats the best name they came up with...Oh well as long as it is good i aint complaining.

    Agreed. Good decision to release the Alternative Edition content as DLC. Again, not certain why this could not be achieved with the forthcoming Super Street Fighter IV content.

    I already own the game and would just like the extra episode as d/l. I don't need the entire game again.

    Personally, I would have prefered a hard copy of it. Oh well, I'll still end up getting it.

    Awesome! I already own RE5 and played the crap out of it, so I wasn't planning on buying the whole game again, but now I can just have the extra stuff! Life is sweet.

    @ squidracerX
    If that's the only new thing, then I'm not buying it. I was expecting more content since it is also being released for the 360 and since Natal hasn't come out yet, I doubt the 360 version will feature motion controls. I'll try to stay tuned to see what more announcements are made regarding to this game.

    come on capcom. i love your games. but... really. super street fighter 4. and the multyplayer add on for re5 days after the games release. Now we have what? super turbo mega RE5 edition. so it going to be an add on. doesn't sound like it. Will our weapons and unlocks transfer. i doubt it. I beat the re5 like 10 times. I don't really feel like doing it AGAIN just to see one new episode that is going to cost probably 30 bucks or more.

    I take back what i said! I decided since this article is so badly worded to go look at other websites, it IS a full retail box in Japan, but in the USA it WILL be just DLC!! i am stupified and corrected! Why they did this for RE5 but not for Street Fighter 4 is beyond me!? But they say this will make you not sell your copy of RE5 back. I guess that's not as big a problem in Japan. S oi was wrong, it IS DLC. Will it be that way for motion control if they release it here? Who knows, but the extra level will be bought separate! Again if you don't have the game yet Im sure its 100% full download... but if you have it you're lucky

    @ Simulator_Shock, I grew up playing all the RE games (most of which are great) and still think 4 is the best. Does the fact i have a different opinion than you make me a noob? don't think it does does it.

  • 2w-sephiroth

    Posted Nov 10, 2009 4:45 pm PT

    Better add something else... I mean I may just rent the game for that "extra content". No point buying a whole game again just for a small chapter.

    @ForsakenWicked
    what are the new features? how did you miss the whole article!? MOTION CONTROL!!!!! It is a major release for the new Sony control, and perhaps microsoft's as well (not announced though). This is like RE4 for the Wii that everyone loved so much, the ONLY thing new in that was motion control. So its a pretty big edition, plus that new chapter.
