Call of Duty sequel confirmed for 2010

Days before Modern Warfare 2 launch, Activision confirms it will continue releasing annual installments of first-person shooter series.

After Activision announced better-than-expected earnings today, its executives held a conference call with analysts. During the call, they made the not-so-surprising revelation that the company is planning to release new installments in its tent-pole game franchises.

"In [calendar year] 2010, Activision Publishing is expected to release strong, innovative new titles," Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith told analysts. "The diversified lineup will include titles based on the best selling franchises including Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Shrek, [and] Spider-Man."

While the Shrek game will be a tie-in with the forthcoming computer-animated film Shrek Forever After, little is known about the new Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, or Spider-Man titles. However, the next Spider-Man movie won't be released until 2011 at the earliest, meaning that the next game, first revealed in August, will likely be comic-book based.

That said, there is a fair amount of information--and even more speculation--about the next Call of Duty game. In May, an employee at Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch accidentally revealed that "Call of Duty 7" was already "in production," presumably for the series' traditional holiday release window.

The Treyarch report closely followed a rumor that had the studio's music department looking for "Vietnam War-era tunes, as well as Cuban, African, and Soviet Union music"--hinting at a Cold War setting. Though unconfirmed, that came several months after Treyarch's senior producer told the UK edition of Official Xbox Magazine that Call of Duty: World at War would be the last game in the series to be set during World War II. That transition has already been made by franchise founder Infinity Ward, whose second present-day game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, ships Tuesday.

There's also the possibility the new Call of Duty game due in 2010 may not be a direct sequel. At a press event that preceded June's Electronic Entertainment Expo, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said his company was looking to expand the series into other genres. In March 2008, he publicly mused about the possibility of a massively multiplayer title based in the Call of Duty universe.

I payed $60 dollars for COD: Modern Warfare 2 it wasn't worth it I could have got something like Medal of Honor something cheep for around $20 bucks. Believe me Modern Warfare 2 was the best game i've ever played. So I traded it in and got $20 and got my medal of honor game hope this helps! I also went back in and saw that gamestop had it for sale for $35 so I bought it again because I missed it! Thanks for the ripp off gamestop!

Please, PLEASE, do something different. I'm tired of WW2, and there are other Vietnam games out there. Either go Cold War, do a European conflict, or do something brand new. I can't take another rehash.

Call of Duty 7 for Vietnam!

Let them make a vietnam war or a cold war game. One main reason Modern Warfare 2 was great is that they left the modern era and waited a while before they went back. Almost every time a movie, game, or book does that it becomes a success. Play your vietnam next year but then the year after that you get a kick ass modern warfare game.

Vietnam would be amazing for a game. I can already sense this will be a better game than Modern warfare 2. Just please make keep the carnage. Actually just make it as bloody as the new wolfenstein.

Although I would like to see a COD game at Vietnam setting, there are still lots of ideas out there for a COD game. They could start on COD:WORLD WAR 3 or COD: KOREAN INVASION etc. Obviously they have to make up story and events for this.

A cold war era CoD would be great. They could set it in a Soviet Union vs NATO war (like Redstorm Rising).

As long as Treyarch doesn't make a modern warfare game, then thats fine, i thought WaW was a good game but now after getting my hands on game i had waited so long for and just had to preorder, mw2 is better

i really hope that treyarchs next game will be set in the vietnam war. i think they should leave the mw3 to infinity ward cuz they did such a great job with mw and mw2. also i think it would be great to have a game set in the vietnam war because there are not many god games set in that war and i know treyarch would do a pretty good job on it

@supergamer514 yes but if for me. When I play a game, there must be gore. When people get shot up in real life it is messy. In the games that I play it is messy. I grew up at a time when M rated games where not afraid of violence. I grew up playing these games and these are the games I like to play now that i an adult. PLEASE ADD CARNAGE! CARNAGE MAKES GAMEPLAY SO MUCH MORE VISCERAL AND SATISFYING!

    @aaronfhff123
after playing the campaign for mw2, i can safely say that it was darker than cod4 and will probably be darker than mw3. generally, games only feature a gratuitous amount of blood in a dark storyline (look at waw). i think mw3 will probably be about as bloody as mw2. however, if treyarch is making a vietnam game, expect pools upon pools of blood.

  • supergamer514

    Posted Nov 14, 2009 8:26 am PT

See, now because of mw2, that made PC gamers hate cod. When this game come's out that'll make then love cod again. (im not a PC gamer)

    @ tannee16

There were plenty of wars fought during the Cold War, just not a direct one between the US and USSR so its pretty easy to speculate what a Cold War COD would be like. Plus they mentioned some of the possible scenarios in the article.

make a call of duty on the war in iraq and afganistan

  • aaronfhff123

    Posted Nov 12, 2009 5:19 pm PT

yes it did have pools of blood but realy only on that level, WHY NOT ALL OF THE LEVELS! WAR IS GRUESOME. Plus when you shoot people suffering on the ground on that level or any level there are no bullet wounds. WORLD AT WAR HAD THAT WOUNDS SO THE NEXT ONE SHOULD. They could even make the carnage more detailed and realistic. This would make the gameplay so much more satisfying.

please Treyarch, don't make us navigate tanks this time. I like FPS games because it's fun shooting things with a gun, not as a tank turret.

awsome!!!! Modern warfare 2 was a let down with the total lack of bullet wounds and dismemberment. modern weapons make a mess of people right??? Not to infinity ward. PLEASE DON'T TAKE OUT THE GORE!!!!

What they should do though is a remake of call of duty 2 the big red one. That is one of the greatest call of duty's I have ever played.

  • tannee16

    Posted Nov 11, 2009 3:49 pm PT

I don't really care about what call of duty comes out with next. Cold war is a really good idea though, because there is no actual war so the players have no clue what is in the game for them!

Treyarch fails, so it will be 2 years before MW3. But MW2 on PC is a big letdown, so I'm not sure if I should bother at all.

Vietnam I don't think has EVER been explored. Would be fun if you ask me! Cold war, Korean war, but either way I agree with most people here, it's getting milked but as long as the games continue to be WAW good and COD:MW good then I guess it's ok. Though the titles would carry more prestige if they would wait awhile to release each game much like Blizzard does. I'm scared now that we'll see a new diablo every year as well!

Thank you for finally putting an end to WW2 shooters! I'm sure that even Holocaust survivors are tired of shooting Nazis for cryin' out loud!
