Indie Spotlight - Attack of the 50ft Robot!
Get ready to play as a 1950s robot bent on a laser shooting missile bombing path of destruction. Check it out!
It’s always amazing when an independent game delivers a AAA experience with a significantly low budget. Attack of the 50ft Robot! does that with its 1950’s atmosphere
Attack of the 50ft Robot! was created by students from the DigiPen Institute of Technology. I came upon this indie gem as I was browsing the catalog for next years Independent Games Festival. The download is only about 160-MB and the install is fairly quick because it comes pre-loaded with an installer. The game includes plenty of options to customize your experience, while you enjoy a 1950’s sound track and drive-in movie.
There are three gameplay modes to choose from: Long Tutorial, which is exactly what it sounds like; Endless Reel, where you cause as much destruction as possible racking in money until you die; and Feature Film, which gives you a quick story as you battle tanks, helicopters, and UFO’s. Controls are easy to grasp as you use your mouse and keyboard for movement. Your robot is equipped with lasers, missiles, hover boots, and the ability to throw your head at victims.
The game takes place in a 1950’s black-and-white setting covered with an old projector filter that gives it that drive-in movie feel. The only colors you see are the lasers coming from your robot and UFO’s. The soundtrack that accompanies your destruction adds a beautiful aesthetic to the game and constantly changes as you progress through the story. The game drops in frame rate during your massive battles, and sound effects will disappear for a few moments, but these faults don’t dampen the overall experience.
For each building, tank, helicopter, and UFO you destroy, there’s this overwhelming sense of satisfaction that stems from the simple but beautiful aesthetics of the game. Attack of the 50ft Robot! has high replay value; its easy download and install make it a must play game. You can download this game and many others at the GameSpot Downloads page.
