Thor, Captain America games due in 2011

Marvel reveals Sega titles will bookend a busy summer season for interactive adaptations of comic company's films.

"Faster than a speeding bullet" is a relatively common description in the world of comics, but the wait for Sega's Captain America and Thor games has been seemingly interminable. Originally announced in April of 2007, the two games will arrive alongside their movie counterparts in the summer blockbuster season of 2011, according to Marvel's latest quarterly financial report.

Thor will debut in May 2011, giving the golden-haired god of thunder his first starring game role. The film will be directed by Kenneth Brannagh (Hamlet, Frankenstein), with Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs, Nixon) as Odin and Chris Hemsworth (Captain Kirk's father in this year's Star Trek) in the title role.

Captain America will follow his fellow Avenger into theaters and onto game shelves in July 2011. A cast for the film--currently titled The First Avenger: Captain America--has not yet been announced. While Thor will be starring in his own game and movie for the first time, the star-spangled supersoldier has been there before, albeit not for decades. The much-reviled 1990 film Captain America was released direct-to-video in the United States, while the following year's arcade game Captain America and the Avengers fared much better, spawning ports for the NES, Genesis, and GameBoy, among others.

The summer movie season of 2011 will be a busy one for Marvel comic book movies. In addition to Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America, Marvel has Spider-Man 4 set for launch May 6, 2011. Although a game based on the webbed wonder's next outing hasn't been officially announced, Activision has made games based on the previous three Spider-Man movies and has the rights to the crime-fighter's gaming escapades sewn up until 2017.

Marvel also has an Avengers film scheduled for a summer 2012 release, although it too lacks an officially announced game tie-in. Sega is a likely candidate to make such a title, as the film would be the sixth Marvel Studios production, with the Sonic publisher having handled the gaming tie-ins for the first five (Iron Man and its sequel, The Incredible Hulk, and the Captain America and Thor projects).

    dam if i were working at sega id have a demo every 3 months to make sure ppl r pleased with how the game is coming along since ppl have lil faith in them for obvious reasons they r so dam stupid just cuz it has been done in the past dont mean they have to continue to rush to release the game the day the movie comes out if 2 quality games mean that we have to wait 1month after the movies i say so be it..

    hmm the comic book tie in's usualy are good but sega hmm always seems like their games are made more to the time and money issues rather than quality but with games like the web of shadows, wolverine n prototype hopefully they can improve enough on the previous versions n learn on the all new franchises where they have gotten it wrong before, n with disney in control of marvel now i get the feeling they wont get many chances to mess up

    God hep us! I know its way to soon to judge but given Segas reputation with comic book films like Iron Man, Hulk & so on I really hope they dont screw this up. I wish somebody good like Rockstar Games would snatch up the rights so we KNOW it will have the care & attention to detail to be a good game. Look at how good DC's Arkham Asylum was.

    great, 2 crap videogames based on 2 bad movies based on the worst 2 comics ever made, maybe they could just surrender their budgets both from the movies AND the videogames to DC so they make the next batman movie and game

    Sega sucks at making super hero based games.....Activision isn't the best, but they are definitely better. Iron Man and Hulk were some of the crappiest games I've ever bought while the Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Spiderman: Web of Shadow both were nice games.

    @BLACKWINGS17 -"Wolverine was the only good movie licensed game in the past 3 decades "

    Wolverine was a decent game, but there have been a few other great licensed games even better than that - Chronicles of Riddick on xbox and Goldeneye for the 64 and and...ok a couple great games. But you are correct in general Movie to Game tie-ins usually suck, just as Game to Movie tie-ins generally suck. If people stopped buying them or going to see them, i bet they would stop making them...But they are just like the saw movies or the energizer bunny, they keep going and going.

    @jazilla

    that would be amusing--a stealth thor game? I can see the ads already: "Use the mighty hammer of Thor and the infinite power of the Norse gods to...covertly infiltrate prisons and psychologically disturb the inmates...or just blow up the whole ****ing prison."

    But I'm not pumped for it. Spider-man is my only favorite Marvel Hero and Batman is the only one I can stand from DC. All the heroes just seem like copied iterations of past ones with extra roids. Sort of why I switched to manga. Besides, they already made a game where you could wield the might of Thor: Age of Mythology.

    So, movie tie-in games? Can we review these now? I say 6.5 and 7.0 respectively. The sad part is, that's not even close to a stretch for what the actual reviews will be. In fact, it may be a littlle kind. Unless they rip off Arkham Asylum in some way, which they won't because that would be a nod to DC, these games will be as bad as Iron Man and that game was only good for 15 minutes lol.

    I refuse to buy anything from greedy Activision. Maybe Marvel's die hard fans might buy this crap but I've come to my senses and realized Marvel isn't what it use to be. Besides Activision makes crap games anyways(.)

    So Thor and Captain America are finally gonna be given movie licensed games of their own?

    I guess this is sweet if you are one of those idiots who still assume that a low-budget game based on a high-budget movie is actually gonna be good. Wolverine was the only good movie licensed game in the past 3 decades - so good luck to all of you willing to waste money on this. Are you delirious? Do you live in denial? Or do you just refuse to let a suffering animal die?

    These games are slapped together and hurried out the door just in time to join the arrival of the movie - because heaven forbid the game not arrive on the date and exact time of the movie. Whatever these people have done by the movie's release date is what they ship out, because they know you will still pay for a game is that half-finished.

    I really like the idea here. I have long wanted a Thor game, and I am a big Captain America fan. I have been waiting for a Cap movie for ages now. We all know movie games suck though. Look at Iron Man. Seriously. I really hope i am proven wrong here, but it will most likely be just another throw together at the last minute game, that tries to play like the movie...but games don't work like that.

    Movie tie-ins not going to be good but these characters havent really been seen in games. It be fun to be Captin America bashing guys with his sheild in 3rd person instead of an overhead veiw(Marval Ultimate Alliance).

    When I read Captain America I drifted off into dreamland where we had the perfect Captain America game. The first half would be in World War 2 where you alongside Buckey fight hordes of Nazis and of course legendary villians like Master Man, Armin Zola, Baron Zemo, and of course Red Skull. Then after crashing into the freezing ocean due to a booby trapped plane Cap enters a modern world and has to fight terrorists. At the end he has to finally confront the Winter Soldier. And then I saw the words Movie Tie-In and Sega who made the craptastic Iron Man game and I just wanted to cry. And BTW read Ed Brubaker's Captain America Volume 5, it's fantastic.

    @nsibbs
    They also need to look at the history of history of superhero videogame and see that they suck because they are based on a movie. It puts big limatations on the game because it forces the makes of the game to be on the same time table as the movie to be out about the same time. That makes the game rushed and doomed. They are also limited to the story of the movie. This trend will not change because those in charge know that they can make a quick buck out of the game. The best think we can do is stay as far away from those games as we can.
