Prince of Persia HQ movie trailer unspools as sequel rumors fly

[UPDATE] First look at big-screen adaptation of fantasy series shows massive special effects shots, sumptuous sets; Ubisoft declines to comment on speculation new game will be unveiled next spring; high-quality trailer now available.

Gamers worried that Disney would skimp on the big-screen version of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time can relax a bit. Today, the first trailer for the fantasy adventure hit YouTube, clocking in at around nearly two and a half minutes. The same trailer was shown at several press events last week, six months after the first footage of the film surfaced.

Now available in high quality (see below), the clip clearly shows that producer Jerry Bruckheimer is making good on his promise to give Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time the same sort of opulent treatment as the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. The film's estimated $150 million budget is on full display, with dozens of effects shots and lavish set pieces, many of which were shot on location in Morocco.

The trailer indicates that the film's story will stick to that of the 2003 game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which centers on a magical dagger that can be used to speed up or slow down time. The movie's script was cowritten by Jordan Mechner, creator of the 1989 original Prince of Persia as well as Sands of Time, which was a critical hit on the PC, PlayStation 2, and original Xbox.

Directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco) and starring Jake Gyllenhaal sporting a decent British accent, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is due out on May 28 in the US and May 27 in the UK.

Around the same time the film opens in theaters, Ubisoft will reveal the next Prince of Persia game, according to unconfirmed reports. Tech site Neoseeker reports that at a press event last week where Bruckheimer was on hand, unidentified members of the film's crew revealed that Ubisoft is planning to announce a follow-up to last year's hit, Prince of Persia.

When asked for comment, a Ubisoft rep would only say, "Ubisoft has not made any official announcements at this time."

whoa i can't believe Disney took a bite out of it! hahahaha years ago my dad predicted that Prince of Persia will have a movie (i didn't believe him since it's like hollywood doesn't CARE) (he said that after watching some cutscenes from prince of persia warrior within, wait.. when was that??) at that time we were so amazed about the game play and it was the first game that has MANY exhibition that anything else! after watching the trailer i was Shocked (even at the title) that Disney took it in, well there isn't much to disney in fact they made lots of movies that is very awesome and also some that are supposed to be for adults. there was some weirdness, that prince actually looks like the one in the Two thrones but the graphics and the SAND effects were awesome! there are lots of stuffs disney has in their sleeves other than producing 3D Guinea pigs ^^ anyways, i hope this follows up a future sequel @emerald
so far the movie that i've seen that sucked was narnia > the choroegraphy looks like Age of conan (arnold ^^) well actually Jake really looked nice as the prince (he played Jarhead right?) i don't think of someone else to be the prince XD (also he lacks some kind of combat experience, i haven't seen him fight using his barefists in any movies i've seen him in ^^)

"naw as soon as i seen disney i knew it was fail"

seriously? Just because Disney doesn't produce rated R movies under their name doesn't mean that everything they produce is crap. As a much older "gamer" (less and less these days) Disney produces some of the best movies (As Kanye would say, Of All Time, Of All Time!) out there with the best stories rated G, PG, or otherwise. Why do we have this mentality that something that is designed as "family" (even that term isn't so family anymore) entertainment is not good or automatically designated a failure. I guess it's the immature kiddo's in you all that think you are too good for something not rated R. By the way, Disney produces many mature (another word for some of you for good) PG-13 and R movies, they just do it under a different label. Touchstone, Miramax, etc. Don't have volume on my computer at work but that trailer looked pretty good to me! OMG it's gonna Fail! Disney is making it and a white guy is the main character. Nooooooooo! It honestly looks like it could be the best game to movie adaptation I've ever seen. As most have sucked horribly.

wow. looks so intense. :p i just kind of wished they made it as the new prince, just because he looks better. xD @abbnormal
yeah... i did... but, instead, (since this guy's not as cool as altair or ezio, xD) he has to use a rope tied around his ankles. :p to be honest, the first thing i think about when i hear anything related to ubisoft is assassin's creed. :p

Awesome trailer, I feel like I watched the whole movie now. That saves me the time/expense from actually having to watch it.

Anyone else think about Assassin's Creed when the guy was standing on that ledge in the beginning? I was expecting him to do a leap of faith into a haystack.

Looks interesting to say the least. It should be entertaining. I don't mind if they took bits out of each game. To me, if you take the best bits of each game and turn it into a movie with a decent story behind it, there should be no reason that it won't be good.

Well it's time we had an American "prince of persia" and an Indian princess with British accent. Why couldn't they be more ****ing realistic. And why does every good franchise needs to be milked till the point that its ***s become dry and the franchise starts smelling like sour milk.

It doesnt look bad but we know trailers might contain every good part of the movies. But guess we will have to wait and see

the trailer looks really weird ... its as if they've taken different elements from the PoP trilogy. graphic and special effects might make the movie interesting but the story looks pretty confusing.

Like the Mummy and Caribbean movies of Disney. Graphics look great and if the story pans out this could be a fun movie to watch.

    Posted Nov 8, 2009 4:22 am PT

The quality looks great, but the story is weird. Sands of Time, but Warrior Within look, Two Thrones corrupted hand and blade chain and the story overall isn't from any of the PoP series, just some elements. Hope though that the movie will not be a catastrophe.

Looks like its got bits of two thrones in it too...wonder if it'll mix the first and last game without including warrior within coz there's obviously no Kaileena or Dahaka (Dahaka would've been really cool!)

    @ Zathic
He is the fastest bowler in the world but not not exactly one of the best cricket players in the world(Pakistan won the 20/20 Worldcup without him),but he is athletic enough for the role. He was rumored to be acting in some Indian movie and has already acted in some advertisements.
