PlayTV tunes into Australia on November 26

Sony details the Australian price and release date for its PS3 PVR add-on.

After two years of waiting, Sony’s Aussie arm has finally announced a release date and price for its personal video recorder add-on for the PlayStation 3. PlayTV will arrive down under on November 26 for A$169.95.

PlayTV adds in a dual-HD TV tuner, allowing users to watch TV via their PlayStation 3. It features a seven-day electronic programming guide, as well as streaming content to your PlayStation Portable wirelessly.

Word came down last week that Sony may be planning on releasing the TV tuner soon, when a screenshot surfaced of a patch, specifically pointing out support for Australian digital TV stations in the addition/changes notes.

A local Sony spokesperson also confirmed to GameSpot AU that ABC iView is also still on track to come out in 2009 for the PS3 but wouldn't go into any specifics. Similar to a dedicated YouTube channel, iView allows people to stream complete episodes of ABC shows that have already aired.

    yep, getting one of these. In short, you can watch HDTV (or SDTV) on the TV via the PS3 and you can record shows

    Nice to hear the iView app is still scheduled for release this year. Hopefully sooner rather than later though.

    awesome. it's around the price i expected and i bet i could find it for around $20 cheaper somewhere. can't wait.

    @Unreal_007
    your dead wrong. the 360 is much more expensive. i did a price comparison before the PS3 slim and it's price drop, and the total cost of the 360 arcade(+live, charger, HDD and wifi costs) basically matched the PS3's then-price of $679, and the ps3 has all those features built-in/included. now with the slim it's at least $150 cheaper in total than the 360.

    I was expecting the price to be lower than this. It is just a USB DVB-T twin tuner after all. All the decoding and other functionality is implemented in the software.

    I bought a USB DVB-T twin tuner for my media center pc for AU$90. I figured the PS3 tuner would be more (it is a Sony product) but $80 more is a bit steep.

    a bit pricey but still cool add-on. HD players are around $300+. I'll need a bigger HHD and this add-on, chewin the wallet but I want it bad.

    "That's because it's not from Micro$oft "" I forget exactly which console is the most expensive. According to my calculations and algorithms its the ps3.

    I am impressed with the price.. I thought they would have applied the usual "you can pay through the nose because you are from Australia" logic
