Wii Sports Resort sells 6.97 million, Wii Sports tops 50 million

Nintendo's latest minigame compilation debuts to nearly septuple-platinum sales.

Yesterday, Nintendo reported that revenues declined 34.5 percent to ¥548.1 billion ($6.0 billion) during the April-September period of its current fiscal year. And while part of that decline could be attributed to a weakness in the hardware market, Nintendo also saw a dip in its global software sales for the Wii and DS. The publisher's console game sales fell from 81.4 million to 76.2 million during the six-month window, and handheld titles slipped from 85 million to 71.1 million units.

Still, Nintendo did see a few wins during the period. In a supplementary to its earnings report released today, Nintendo said that six Wii games and six DS games sold more than a million units during the six-month period. Notably, Nintendo said that one of its tent-pole releases for the year, Wii Sports Resort, has sold 6.97 million units since its June domestic debut and July overseas launch.

Wii Sports Resort's predecessor also continued its strong run. Sold as a stand-alone game in Japan but packed in with Nintendo's console in North America, Wii Sports shifted 4.83 million units during the April-September window, bringing its lifetime total to 50.5 million units. Nintendo's other top releases for the period by units sold were Wii Fit with 4.28 million (22.5 million LTD), Mario Kart Wii with 2.96 million (18.4 million LTD), Wii Fit Plus with 2.13 million (which launched in October), and Wii Play with 1.45 million (24.4 million LTD).

Pokemon led the way on Nintendo's DS sales chart. Pokemon Platinum sold 2.63 million units globally during the period, bringing its lifetime total to 6.39 million units, while Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver debuted to 2.27 million units. New Super Mario Bros. shifted 1.49 million units during the period, bumping its grand total to 19.9 million units, and Mario Kart DS sold an additional 1.48 million units, bringing its lifetime sales to 16.1 million. Available only in Japan, Tomodachi Collection launched to 1.45 million units, and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box premiered with 1.26 million units.

The weaker sales of the Wii in Japan,(no Wii Sports bundled), compared to Europe and USA(bundled Wii Sports) implies a lot about whether system buyers want Wii Sports packed in or not.

    Systems:Wii and DS,PC
Sony and Microsoft's motion controls aren't out yet. Just how they're going to position those in their strategy is only to be speculated on right now. One thing is clear and factual as of now, the Wii is on top against the PS3(the successor to highly successful PS2) and the Xbox360(despite a year headstart). Why? Motion controls with fun software to match. Who's copying who is obvious and to say that MS and Sony aren't is the twisted logic in this discussion.

Wii Sports is a pack! Oh My GOD!!! Um..let's remember it is NOT a pack-in in Japan, where it sells regularly. But hey, let's discount it's numbers. While we're at it, let's add Halo, Resident Evil, Uncharted 2, and Gran Turismo and all of the rest of the packed in games to that list, huh?

Let's also get ready to remove the hundreds of thousands of copies that the XB Modern Warfare 2 packages are gonna move for that game too.

Doesn't sound too good anymore, does it?

But the Wii has stalled. I have never seen so many contradicting new articles in one place. Almost everyday one system is doing badly, then you the next week that they are having their best week ever. What gives? Wii has the highest sales of any of the three consoles. Matter of fact they have the top 3 or 4 games overall.

poor wii if their going to impress me they'll need to increase the graphic capablity, increase the response of the motion control (when i play golf on wii sports i always over power the swing ), and make an improved version of the wii wheel when they do that i'll be happy

I love how Nintendo always fails to acknowledge that the only reason Wii Sports sold so well is because anyone who wants a Wii has no choice whether to buy it or not BECAUSE IT COMES PACKAGED WITH THE WII. And to everyone who thinks this makes the Wii look impressive with games, please go look up sales figures for a large majority of 3rd party titles. May I direct your attention to Dead Space Extraction for the Wii. Anyway, I just think its ridiculous how many of these garbage titles are being sold nowadays. And before you all jump on me and attack, I'll have you know I've always loved Nintendo (and SEGA for that matter) over Sony and Microsoft and have owned every single Nintendo console since NES, but I have never used a system as little as I have the Wii because of the shear lack of quality in their games. Sales numbers aren't everything and unfortunately, if a trend towards these low quality fully priced minigames continues onto other systems, my 20 year gaming career just may come to an end.

if you take out Wii-Sports, WHICH SHOULD NOT BE IN THERE, IT"S A PACK IN WITH THE SYSTEM, that alone is around 20% of the entire total, which is crazy. Do they really have to add a pack in to make their numbers look better? It's like saying Solitaire is the best selling PC game of all time because it's came packed in with every version of Windows since 3.1. It's crazy, you shouldn't add pack ins, that makes no sense and completely scews the numbers. Wii-play, that's different, it came with a controller yes, but you weren't FORCED to buy it. Where as YOU ARE FORCED TO BUY WII-SPORTS with every Wii, it shouldn't be counted separate.

current systems: Wii, NDS (yeah, I´m a fanboy and i´m proud of it, so what?)
This sales are not surprising at all, for, even with the slowdown in recent wii hardware sales, Wii is still one of the most sold consoles ever.
So, each wii user will be getting (or downloading) the latest and top Nintendo Games.
Whether these games are casual or hardcore doesn´t really matter, since the two words are stupid nonsense things created by detractors of the big N.
I just wished Nintendo wasnt so greedy and give us players some good adventure games, as LoZ, or some new Ip´s to be proud of.
Cause it seems third parties are not focusing in making new Wii (and exclusively wii) titles

@Fernicum: where your logic fails is that Sony and MS motion isn't the norm of the system, they aren't abandoning the old style for motion control, and with camera tech, they are completely different animals than the Wii-mote. I had a Wii, notice the HAD, I had a DS, notice the HAD again, My current gens are 360 and PSP. I thought the Wii60 was the way to go, but the system sat collecting so much dust, it never got used. So i got rid of it.

Gears of War: 5.93 million Wii Sports Resort 6.97
Metal Gear Solid 4: 4.28 million
    Killzone 2: 2.02 million
    Uncharted 2: 1.18 million

Now sonny, if this totals less than 6.97 million I'll buy a Wii lol.

Oh, and I'd like to point to all the people who keep complaining on how pack-in games shouldn't be included: Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Super Mario World, which are the three most top-selling games of all time, and widely regarded as some of the best games of all time, were pack-ins also. So if you want to 'remove Wii Sports off of the list', you have to remove Tetris, Super Mario World, and Super Mario Bros. too. =)

Once again this goes to prove that the mass market is where the sales and the money are. We gamers just don't provide the sales, and do you know what makes me laugh? It is that we sit and moan at Nintendo for not providing enough core games but when they can see that that they don't sell very well on the other consoles, why should they bother? I mean a couple of million is the average for the biggest AAA games, whereas Nintendo's casual games sell into the tens of millions in their lifetime. I am annoyed with us, the gamer, because we want more, but when we have more, we don't want it!

My systems: Wii, Xbox 360, PS2, would get a PS3 but I don't have the $$. Anyways, my Xbox gets the most use these days, but the Wii is always good for some nice relaxing stuff. Still have to work my way through Metroid Prime Trilogy. That, along with Dragon Age: Origins and Modern Warfare 2, is sure to make November a busy month. Come on, people, it doesn't matter which console is better, it's all about the games.

And had a Wii, but i gifted it to my little cousin 5-6 months after purchasing (got it on first month it was available there)... the dam thing make me boring as hell.
