Resident Evil 5 US sales nearly 2 million

Citing NPD figures, Reuters reports Capcom's latest survival horror shooter nears new milestone on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC.

International news service Reuters caused a bit of a stir earlier today, when it reported as part of a Halloween feature that EA and Visceral Games' Dead Space 2 is not only official, but also due in 2010. Given that EA has previously stated that a Dead Space sequel will soon be entering full-scale development, the statement has merit, but the publisher was quick to dismiss Reuters' claim as mere speculation.

However, Reuters' sales statistics for Capcom's highly regarded Resident Evil 5 are of far less dubious provenance. Citing figures from the industry-standard NPD Group, Reuters said as part of the same aforementioned report that Resident Evil 5 has to date sold 1.94 million units in the US since its launch in March for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A PC edition of the game went on sale in September.

In June, Capcom said that Resident Evil 5 had achieved global sales of more than 5 million units. Yesterday, the publisher attributed its strong performance during the first six months of its fiscal year in part to the game's continued strength at retail.

As part of the Tokyo Game Show in September, Capcom announced Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition would be available in Japan for the PS3 this spring, with an Xbox 360 edition also teased. The game will support Sony's new EyeToy-compatible motion controller, which will launch in Japan in March. The Alternative Edition will also include a new episode featuring Chris and Jill that is based on a flashback scene from the original RE5.

    I don't understand why people are so hateful of RE5. Resident Evil 5 was the game RE4 should have been, it was better than it in every way shape and form. It felt alot more like the classic games than 4 and it closed the curtain on the original story for us old fans who do not want to play a FPS Resident Evil (which seems like what RE6 is looking to be). Honestly, if RE5 had released in 2005 (with graphics like those of RE4) and RE4 had launched in 2009 (with graphics like RE5) you all would be saying RE4 was terrible compared to RE5. It's all in hindsight. Has anyone here even played RE4 recently? I tried to and after 15 minutes I couldn't handle how atrocious it was, yet we all remember it with at least fairly fond memories. As far as the future, I think the direction they need to take RE6 towards is back towards the old horror, dark and claustrophobic games of old but with faster, smarter zombies. Yes, zombies, not majini or "cattle", rotting shambling zombies. Look at dawn of the dead, could you imagine those zombies in a Resident Evil game? Amazing. Oh and for the person who said RE5 is so much shorter than the old games, have you actually played the old games? It takes me 2 hours to charge through RE5 and about an hour and 15 minutes to get through RE1, RE2 or RE3. The only older RE game that was long was Code Veronica, and even that can be beaten under 2 hours.

    RE5 may not have been "vintage" survival horror, but it is a fun game to play. In the end, that's what may count most. Honestly, I don't think I would have liked RE5 as much if it were too much of a RE4 retread. At least they tried something a little different with the franchise.

    I figure, if you've been fighting zombies for as long as Chris Redfield has, they'd stop being so scary to you too.

    From the comments below it sounds like everybody likes RE5 but don't think it's perfect. I like the formulaic improvements made for RE4 and would prefer that style to continue. On the other hand, RE5 was not scary, had little atmosphere, no suspense, mediocre story.

    To be perfectly honest, I prefer the newer style of Resident Evil. Both 4 & 5 are the most high-quality, fun third-person shooter/action games that I have ever played, differing from other titles with a horror aesthetic, limited supplies and inventory management.

    Although, I don't think they could pull off re-packaging it again. It'll be interesting to see what becomes of Resident Evil 6.

    Awesome game. But not Resident evil!! This ain't no horror-game at all anymore. Not scary once. Remember re2 & re3.. Those were kick-ass. BRING BACK THE ZOMBIES!! NOW!!

    To be honest I love RE, but Deadspace was a fresh, much needed atmospheric horror game. I believe EA can make a wonderful series out of Deadspace, maybe even enough to top Residen evil over all. I can't wait till Dead Space 2!

    Paul, yo say the Series is going downhill...But have you really played all of the Resident evil games? remember that resident evil 4 was released 05. and ya resident evil 5 really isn't anything great that's no lie, but that's only because it didn't try anything new and the resident evil story line was pretty much dead when capcom switch that out for better game play.

    Resident evil 6 is supposed to start from scratch again, so get ready for another game that will shape the industry like RE4 before it.

    Resident Evil 6 will come out. It will blow your mind.

    They should have made the co-op a little different, maybe by seperating the two players or something. I just felt way to safe the whole time. I felt like I could of taken on anyone even while playing alone. The atmosphere was not their like in the other ones. I liked it, but I just want a RE game with the right atmosphere, less ammo and a variety of melee and make shift weapons.

    Well I've loved all the Resident Evil games, I did enjoy 5 but mainly because of the CO-OP online, as its the first game I've played when the CO-OP really does work and isn't just a tacked on feature. It is though, without a doubt, the worst RE game. RE Remake on the gamecube is how all future RE games should be, man I bought a gamecube just for RE Remake and Zero, and it was worth it. "Angry Villagers" just aren't scary. What's scary about an African shouting abuse at you then trying to kill you, I can get that in Far Cry 2 aswell. Dead Space for me is one of the best horror games to of come out on the PS3/360 so far. Though I really enjoyed Siren:Blood Cursed too. Still waiting for the Project Zero series though, it seems horror has really been neglected so far. The market is too saturated with FPS'.

    Also for newcomers and RE newbies. Check this video to understand some of the RE history from their maker , mr.kobayashi.

    Check resident evil Remake here in gamespot , its lore graphics and atmosphere and go back to RE5... And tell me that im wrong....

    Resident evil 5 was the worst RE game from the original franchise i ever played since RE 1 for PSone....

    Ive played all RE , i was huge fan of it till RE4 and i must admit that RE5 was way worse than RE4 when i didnt like RE4 at all since was a total different game than what RE franchise was about...

    I unistall the game at the end of chapter 2.. I dont want a better looking RE4 with the same scenario about la plaguas and alien parasites... Bring back RE to its original roots... ffs already...

    PS. a very dissapointed RE fan. This is not RE... This could be a different horror franchise but not RE...really..

    Well..I really enjoyed Resident Evil 5 & Dead Space, as they both provided me with a different experience. I hope to see the sequels for the both of them too in the future.

    in my opinion this is the best survival realistic game. realistic is crappy in all the other game even racing but this was great, count your ammo and save it(head shots) you cant find health every ware(Dont let them touch you!)

    Good game; I really wish I had run through it with another player. Figuring out how to get the CPU partner to NOT totally F up was frustrating. Does 2 million US sold seem a little low to anyone else at this point? It was on 360 and PS3. How well has Uncharted 2 done so far US? Maybe I'm out of touch because I have about 60 or so 360 games alone. I always think HALO should better based on US user base.

    Resident Evil 5 (PS3) is an excellent game. I knew from the start that this game was not only ONE of the most anticipated games but, it was going to do very well. I can't wait for the previews of Resident Evil 6!

    Technically, RE5 was not a very good game-- it had a terrible plot, the characters were boring, it wasn't scary, the control scheme was moronic, and the enemies (and Sheva) had terrible A.I. But the game had its own feel , had tons of replay value, and was just plain fun. So good for Capcom.

    anybody could do survival horror like the old RE games, what's stopping them? nothing. THe new RE5 plays like a clumsy third person shooter at best. Run, stop, turn, shoot, repeat until games over... pick up magic ammo as it appears out of nowhere from dead creatures poo holes. Wow, the realism and terror, i can't take it, help me, i'm scared... please hold me. lol.

    Pre-rendering means HD, in 1080p possibly with interactive sets like in RE-0 and REmake, only in HD. I wouldn't even mind if they had to have load times, anything is better than RE5 crap.

    those who ask for a resident evil 5 with survival horro like the old days it is imposible, cuzz as i said earlier, shinji mikami, the creator from the resident evil saga, left capcom, now the one who is making the games is the megaman creator games, but i think that he should do megaman games than resident evil games.

    RE5 was ok, ok for a clumsy shooter. It retained some of the RE vibe with cheap references to past RE games, but sadly it just comes off like just another shooter game.

    I wouldn't mind if Capcom split the series into 2 main franchises, one being the newer stupid shooter type as if RE5, and the second being a throwback to the old pre-rendered style. Only now they could go HD photorealistic with the pre-rendering and really blow peoples minds. I am curious about if they could go full 1080p with a pre-rendered type game? that would be awesome, the old survival tactics, with new HD interactive pre-rendered level designs... awesome.

    I wish they would do that, then i might really enjoy the franchise once again.

    Dead Space was so much better than this game. It's sad that it didn't go on to sell as well just because it was an unknown IP. Meanwhile, millions of people buy a game just because it says "Resident Evil" on the front of it even though it was not a very good game.

    Sure, I bought it on day one. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't. It wasn't very good at all.
    Not only that, but had I waited I could have got the new version with more content.

    Oh well. If the sequel isn't made as a horror game I'm not supporting the series anymore. There are enough other horror games to play, and there are many better action games to play.

    If they somehow can make the next resident evil..you know...scary or freaky, or at least atmospheric like the old ones I would like that a lot. Games can still be scary, dead space was a very freaky game to me.

    You people who keep saying RE needs to go back to its roots need to shut the hell up.The old RE games were slow as f*ck, and the Zombies weren't even fun to fight either. Sure I hate the Majini's too but Zombies are plain boring. Some games have to change, old skool fans are the main ones who turn their backs on most series when they remain too classic for too long. Why do you think Castlevania keeps changing? Aside from the crappy Anime characters which are annoying because I prefer the classic European Goth style over the choppy Anime manga stuff. RE6 defiantly needs to have coop again, this is why RE5 sold allot in the first place. And it was without a doubt very short compared to the classic RE games.

    To be honest RE5 did nothing revolutionary with gameplay... RE4 set the bar, RE5 matched it. But I liked the setting of RE5 better than RE4. Castles and Zombies just don't mix. I am very hopeful for RE6. We have settled Leon's and Chris's story. Jill and/or Claire up for the protagonists of the next installment?

    As for the future of the series I think they need to blend the gameplay of the original RE games and RE4 and 5. Use the real time inventory, a camera similar to the original games (obviously upgraded tho) and a shooting system similar to RE4 and 5. Throw in the puzzle aspects of the originals and a good story and I think you have a game that would please every fan of the series.

    I know there are a lot of people who were disappointed by RE5. It wasn't the instant classic that RE4 was but it was damn good and the gameplay was amazing. I just thought they tried a little to hard with the story and sort of forgot that Resident Evil is a horror game, somewhere along the line I felt they forgot about that aspect of it. There are a few things I would have done different along the way but it was still one of the best co-op experiences ever IMO.
