Tekken 6 ships 2.5 million

Namco Bandai's latest King of the Iron Fist tournament rushes retailers worldwide en masse in first week of release.

Just in case a television advertising blitz including spots on Monday Night Football weren't evidence enough, Namco Bandai has big expectations for Tekken 6. Today, the company gave an indication of exactly how big, as it confirmed shipments of 2.5 million copies of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game to retailers worldwide.

The game, which launched in North America on Tuesday and arrived in European stores today, is available in multiple retail configurations. It can be purchased on its own, bundled with a wireless arcade-style joystick, and in some territories, packed in with the PlayStation 3 hardware itself.

While the game still features one-on-one fighting, Tekken 6 takes the series in a new direction with its Scenario Campaign mode. Building off the Devil Within mode from Tekken 5, the Scenario Campaign is more like a 3D action game where players advance the story by demolishing mobs of underlings followed by boss battles against the main characters in the series. At the moment, players go through the Scenario Campaign with an AI teammate, but Namco Bandai plans to release a free update this winter that will allow for two players to tackle the story online together.

    @ thekey,

I agree with you that the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Tekken 6 have identical graphics.

However, the big difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Tekken 6 is the loading times.

Even Gamespot pointed out in their review of Tekken 6 that the load times for Tekken 6 are significantly faster on the Xbox 360.

I can tell you from personal that when you compare the two games without installing them to the hard drive, the Xbox 360 version loads far faster than the PS3 version. I can also tell you that when you install the game to the PS3 hard drive, the PS3 version still loads slower than the Xbox 360 version being played from the disc. The simple reason for this is because the Xbox 360 transfers data at a rate of 16MB per second, compared to only 9MB per second for the PS3.

This isn't anything new, friend. We have seen games like Street Fighter 4 load faster like this on Xbox 360. And games like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 also load much faster on Xbox 360. For example, it takes 8 seconds to load on the PS3 each time you swap a characters. On Xbox 360 it takes only 3-4 second to load each time you swap a character. This difference in load times is because of the 16MB vs 9MB difference in data transfer rate.

Two-player Scenario Campaign is all well and good, but fixing the Online Mode (Ranked/Player matches) needs to be the priority. Online, the game lags persistently, and even the slightest invisible lag can totally disrupt timing. This flaw is keeping Tekken 6 from being truly great.

too many good games for 360 to buy, i guess thats what happens when MS bombards the users with two 9.5 excluisves in a week + all of the old playstation greats with better performance on 360 day one now.

Yeah OK Try Tekken 1 and tell me if its the same as Tekken 3. Or Tell me if Tekken 3 is anything like this one. And we all know SF4 is exactlly the same as Tekken and Virtua Fighter.

ive been playing it for non-stop even called in sick for work... i miss my epic arcade fight with other arcade fighters in korea and philippines.. my... the good oldays turned into a lag fight anticipating ur own move and not the enemies.. this is how you destroy a franchise by the online net code...

however!! i heard rumors that they are fixing it right now so daijobu des tekken6 saikyou no otoko game!

It looks cool, but I'm not getting. None of my friends are fans of the series, and I hear the online net-code is awful. I expect more from a modern fighter.

I agree with zerobeam, I want my create-a-character feature ......customization is all good and dandy, but I want to apply various fighting styles to characters that look nothing like the original host of the style. it was awesome applying voldo's style to some massive brute....or astaroths style to some petite girl who looks completly innocent enough to seem harmful.

The point of this article was to inform that namco bandai has big expectations for the game, considering they shipped that many copies at launch. Thats a lot. And to give a small bit of information on the game for those interested.

Not meant to give any ideas on sales or potential sales at all. Not in the least bit.

Fighting games are a lot more precise than FPS games. Online, the games shouldn't be compared. Besides those FPS do lag, play CoD or counter strike and of course there is lag. Hit boxes sway back and forth and not perfectly aligned with the character model. CoD allows you to see this sometimes with its auto-spec of the person who just killed you, or the kill cam. That aside, Namco knows what their doing and they'll fix it.

i love tekken but no ones going to want to play coop online with scenario because by the time its released EVERYONE will be done with it. online play should be a priority and im sure namco will come through. im sure there not going to slap there fanbase in the face like SNK did with king of the fighters XII.

"Namco Bandai plans to release a free update this winter that will allow for two players to tackle the story online together." Hope hey will add an offline co-op scenario mode too, along with the online one, ofcourse!

Fixing the lagging online gameplay should be a priority!!!
Most fans and veteran players were looking forward for the online mode, and it is just disappointing not be able to perform accurate and button responsive techniques and juggle combos.

Games with 32 online players don't even lag that much...

  • mad_krips

    Posted Oct 30, 2009 5:34 pm PT

I hope they're working on a free 2 player offline scenario mode update as well. They fact that they release the game without 2 player online nor offline really blows, and is probably a reason, in addition to poor load times and lag, why it didn't get a score that most of us expected.

  • SalarianChemist

    Posted Oct 30, 2009 5:33 pm PT

    @ mad krips

The reason why I rated the Xbox 360 versions of games such as Tekken 6 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 higher than the PS3 versions actually has to do with loading times more than anything else.

As I mentioned before, this is to be expected in many cases due to the fact that the Xbox 360 transfers data at a rate of 16MB per second compared to only 9MB per second for the PS3.

Tekken 6 does take quite a bit longer to load on the PS3 than it does on the Xbox 360. And Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 takes eight seconds to load on the PS3 each time you swap a character. On the Xbox 360 it only takes three to four seconds to load when you swap characters. This adds up after a while, so in my opinion loading times matter a lot.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. If you want to spend lots of time staring at a screen while a game loads, it's up to you. However, I would rather be playing a game than waiting for loads and installs. That is why I am getting Tekken 6 on Xbox 360.

Online is Laggy for both PS3 and XBOX 360. It's a huge disappointment.

Single player campaign is lame and no local co-op either. Other than that arcade is what makes this game still worth it.

I wasn't sure which version of Tekken 6 to get, so I was waiting for the reviews.

I knew from the start that the Xbox 360 version of Tekken 6 would have the advantage of being able to play with a lot more people online, since there are so many more people who play online with the Xbox 360. Plus, the majority of people who play online with the Xbox 360 have the ability to chat online while playing since the Xbox 360 comes packed with a microphone. Unfortunately, the PS3 doesn't come packed with a headset, which means there are a lot less people to chat with while playing online.

However, I thought the PS3 version might end up better due to the fact that Tekken 6 was based on arcade hardware using the design of the PS3.

I've made the decision to buy Tekken 6 for the Xbox 360, since the graphics and sound of both versions are identical. The big difference between the two games is load times. The Xbox 360 version loads quite a bit faster than the PS3 version. This really isn't a surprise since the Xbox 360 transfers data at a rate of 16MB per second compared to only 9MB per second for the PS3.

Tekken 6 is a game like Virtua Fighter that doesn't rely on complex circular motions for the controls the way that Street Fighter 2 relies on all those complex half-circle and full-circle motions. This means Tekken 6 works great on both the Xbox 360 controller and the PS3 controller, even though certain parts of Street Fighter 2 play rather poorly on the Xbox 360 and PS3 d-pads at times. I'm glad to see that Tekken 6 offers a wireless joystick that can be used for the Xbox 360; it plays very well and has a cool design.

So, if anyone is getting Tekken 6 and wants to play, please feel free to send me your Gamer Tag.

Please tell me somebody heard or read real proof somewhere that they are going to fix the online lag with Tekken 6, anybody? I've played 32-man death matches in Killzone 2 without a hiccup, yet two fighters in a small closed off space is too much for it to handle?

BlazBlue and Tekken 6 say hi.

The PS3 thanks to it's controller is about a hundred times better for fighters than the 360.
