Sims moving into next-gen digs?

The official story: See below.

What we heard: Electronic Arts' The Sims is one of the most successful gaming franchises in history. Since its debut in 2000, it has routinely dominated the PC sales charts every time an expansion or sequel has been released. Its value as a property is further enhanced because the game's formula of controlling characters in an aquarium-like environment made the series accessible to traditional nongamers.

It was only a matter of time before the game moved onto consoles, which it did in 2003 with The Sims for the PlayStation 2. However, the game's new home proved not to be a perfect fit, because it wasn't quite the retail whopper it was on the PC. Console versions have sold decently enough, though, and several Sims ports and spin-offs continue to be fed into the market with various degrees of critical reception.

Continuing The Sims into the next generation seems to be in EA's plans. An e-mail that was sent out by an EA producer to members of the gaming industry reveals that EA's Redwood Shores, California, studio is looking to hire people for future Sims projects. Among the requisite calls for artists, producers, and software engineers is an opening for a "PS3 Engineer."

We're going to go out on a limb here and assume that "PS3" does in fact mean PlayStation 3. It should be noted that the PS3 was singled out, as there was no mention of an opening for an Xbox 360 engineer. To date, there has been no announcement of furthering The Sims franchise on any platform, let alone next-gen consoles. It's no stretch to assume the series will continue on the PC, but the move to next-gen consoles isn't a given--or is it?

When asked about The Sims coming to the PS3, an EA rep said, "We haven't announced anything at this time." Not to be outdone (and to keep a Rumor Control mainstay in the loop), another EA rep told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation."

Playing the devil's advocate, what reasons would there be to not make a next-gen console version of The Sims? For one, The Sims hasn't been the success on consoles that EA had hoped it would be. And two, development costs for next-gen games are too high to risk a game that isn't a guaranteed big seller.

On the other hand, it is The Sims after all, a franchise that has moved more than 58 million units worldwide, and EA has plenty of money to burn to get a strong foothold in the next-gen market. Though expansions (which are money in the bank to EA) made their way onto the PC with relative ease, moving them onto consoles just wasn't in the picture. However, with microtransactions being "the next big thing" with the Xbox 360 and PS3, a Sims game for those consoles and the possibility of charging gamers $1 for a virtual beanbag chair or whatnot might be too enticing to ignore. And with superior next-gen graphics, wouldn't locking a Sim in a room with no windows, doors, or toilet be that much more diabolical (read: enjoyable)?

Bogus or not bogus?: Nothing is set in stone, but we're leaning waaaaaaay far into "not bogus" territory. Now where's that pink flamingo lawn ornament!?

I loved Sims 2, but in some ways the game still feels limited. I hate that you can have two characters absolutely hate each other, and yet they can't do anything but beat each other up. Truth be told, with as Risque as Sims 2 got they really could stand to include more mature material, and they could allow for sims to kill each other in silly non-gory ways, but with consequences for thier actions and such. Say your character's creativity is low, your sim would sloppily bury his victim in the back yard, and maybe another sim will notice it and call the cops... Or the creativity is high, and the body is disposed of, but then the character is haunted randomly by the spirit of the victim who may be out for revenge.
Also I'd love to see natural disasters strike the Sims.... Including, but not limited to Godzilla.
Not that these things should be the primary focus of the games, but at least give those of us who would like a little more excitement in the game something to do besides use our vampire to seduce the nehghbor girl while hoping the wife doesn't see.

Now you can manage people pooping on the PS3! There's nothing more exciting than a poop simulation. I hope they have add wipe option, since it's a next-gen game. If I can't wipe, it's not next-gen.

The Sims was fun when it first came out, but EA screwed it up, imho. They kept making endless add ons (all at $30), and then a lot of crappy console versions. They made way too many add ons. I never bought a single add on for mine.

The Sims formula just plain doesn't work on consoles (although whether or not it works on PS3 depends on just exactly what Sony's planning to stuff into that thing.) It's not going to surprise me if EA goes for the "let's put the Sims on everything from a watch to the Japanese Earth Simulator supercomputer" model...it's been their MO throughout.

Incidentally, where regards the Sims being for "non-gamers": Bull****. I'm pretty damn hardcore (been playing 'em since 1982, and lost more sleep to games like Civ2 and Rise of Nations than any sane person should), but sometimes I just like to play something that isn't hero-saves-world or bigass military machine conquers everything. Sims 2 fits that bill nicely, and those little computer people (not to be confused with 1985 game of same name) really start to grow on you after awhile---especially when, after you've intentionally burned a sim to death to punish her for angering the God in the Black Chair™, the Grim Reaper stops to use the toilet on his way out (this actually happened---wish I'd remembered to keep the screenshot last time I reinstalled Windows.)

What's with people saying The Sims is for sissies and casuals? Just because it's accessible to women and people who don't spend five hours of every day mastering level-up systems? That's a pathetic attitude to take. Anyway, I'm neutral to this article. I think Sims games are horrible on anything but the PC, and a more powerful console can't change that in my view.

IF EA does make a Sims game for Next generation consoles, The controllers would be a big issue. Also player creaated material is still not downloadable and able to be inserted into the game like the PC version. For example, The PC version allows players to design clothes and furniture for their homes. Hopefully EA will find a way to include this feature in the game. I wounder will Nintendo include this feature in Animal Crossing for the Revolution?
