The official story: Neither Electronic Arts nor PC Gamer had responded to requests for comment as of press time.

What we heard: It seems like advance copies of print magazines are preempting game announcements all over the world. Yesterday, it was the British Official Xbox Magazine blowing the lid off F.E.A.R. for the Xbox 360, much to the chagrin of PC gaming purists.

Many of the same people who scoffed when they heard that F.E.A.R. would be ported to consoles got a pleasant surprise today. That's when scans began to circulate of what is almost certainly the cover of next month's PC Gamer magazine.

Like most covers, the one pictured isn't shy about telling onlookers about its contents. In huge letters in the middle, it trumpets "Command & Conquer 3" underneath the words "New race, new story, new war!"

So is the shot actual confirmation of the C&C's existence? Well, if it's a fake, it's a clever fake. The format is exactly the same as that of the magazine's cover style, as can be seen on its Web site. Besides using the same fonts as previous issues, it also has the correct issue number, 149.

While official confirmation still hasn't been received, there was little question that a new Command & Conquer would come along eventually. With real-time strategy games among the best-selling PC games, there was much speculation that Electronic Arts would eventually bring back the storied series. Never mind that EA never met a franchise it didn't like. In 1998, it bought Westwood Studios, which was folded into EALA in 2003, primarily to get hold of the Command & Conquer license.

Today's leak appears to confirm whispers among the development community that the C&C franchise was being resurrected after going on hiatus after September 2003's Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour. Indeed, EA's recent release of Command & Conquer The First Decade, a compilation of 12 C&C games, now appears to be a marketing move to restoke interest in the franchise.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus--expect more at E3...or sooner.

I simply dont know how EA dare make another RTS after the atrocity that was C&C* Generals (*Despite it having bugger all to do with either C&C universe.) So at first i was nervous, but then i discovered that Mike Verdu (Co-Founder of Westwood Studios.) was leading the project.

And now i'm simply terrified, any man who would choose to stay with EA rather than to go to Petroglyph is both insane and stupid, and i wouldnt trust him even with the Generals franchise.

However, he seems keen to return tot he roots of the C&C series, so this could go either way...

Ha, wishful thinking Vincentga.... EA bought the C&C franchise to make $$$.. They'll never give it up now.. How could any small company afford their asking price?? EA's a franchise-gobbling machine.. That's what they do... Let small companies innovate and create something truly amazing.. Then buy them out and release crap with the old Franchise's name, that has nowhere near the quality or support of the original...

Whatever the fawk happened to anti-monopoly laws on this planet? I'm sick of the EA's and MicroShaft's of the world that only care about their profit-margin....

Generals was horrible, and didn't even resemble Command & Conquer. EA raped and pillaged the C&C/Westwood franchise for profit. Lets hope they manage to turn some of that around with this one.. I'm doubtful however that a soulless multinational like EA can do so..

I was a huge fan of Westwood and C&C but, if EA's track record and that AWFUL screen-shot(the one with the SC Terran marine style troops) are anything to go by I am not getting excited.

Its good news to know there is gna be a new one just hope its as far as possible from the crappy graphics engine that was in "Generals" that failed to bring good graphics and failed to be a mainstream as it was as heavy as hell on most even high end PC's i think they should have a look at "Act of War" when they do their graphics engine or look at the dazzling "Earth 2160" engine that is pretty high quality and so light on mainstream pcs and btw i believe if it is made with a so light engine like the one of "RedAlert 2" it would be a great seller but they have to work on making an interface to make us think its a new engine
i believe a starcraft 2 would be somthing great if they stop working on ghost and world of warcraft finish the game then go back on the other stuff this way they can make sure they make a good game that would bring them back better money

EA just made a press release with more information on Command & Conquer 3.

"We have been waiting to reveal this game for quite some time and are thrilled to bring the series back to where it all began," said Louis Castle, VP of Creative Development at EA Los Angeles (EALA) and co-founder of Westwood Studios, creator of the Command & Conquer series. "The Tiberium universe is a personal favorite of mine, and this saga's new direction will prove to be a worthy addition to one of the most celebrated RTS franchises."

I just HOPE next Command & Conquer will not create by EA company.

There, administrator (president and people like that) have no respect for customer and give any money for support.

Read support don't exist and/or is horrible. I'm sure player of C&C Generals will understand me.

I hope a small new company will buy the right of C&C and so can produce a wonderful game WITH great support like Westwood did in past.

A game, even a wonderful game, without a good support is not a good game. And I don't think never administrator of EA will understand that. Big companies are never good for customer. They are blind and deaf.

I prefer wait 3 years or more to buy a game like the WONDERFUL, the FANTASTIC game C&C Red Alert 2 (and Yuri's Revenge).
It's my favorite game of all time for now.

The Command & Conquer games done by EA doesn't compare to the original games. Command & Conquer, Red Alert, Red Alert 2, Tiberian Sun... I have hope though. As long as we don't get another pooh simplified Generals games.

Maybe this time they won't mease up the air combat. I mean wtf? The GLA had absolutely NO AIR AT ALL, the Chinese airforce consisted of a prototype MiG and some old ass Helicopter that is play as overpowering in the game? Sheesh. Oh yes and talking about overpowered the U.S. Air Force. The Raptor is not that god damn cheap and strong! The Aura Bomber is fictional and overpowered, the U.S. Helicopter is... well... that one's not too bad, Stealth Bomber is not too bad, But damn! look at the U.S. Air Force compared to the other 2 groups.

"New race, new story, new war!"

In other words, a game that's completely unrelated to the C&C, with the C&C brand being tacked on for purely marketing reasons.
