The official story: See below.

What we heard: On the Web site of Call of Duty 2 developer Infinity Ward, an admin writes that some big news is coming out of the Encino, California-based studio this Saturday. After listing three famous events that have taken place on April 28, community liaison "fourzerotwo" says, "What goes down this April 28th is equal to, if not surpasses, the magnitude of any of those."

Even though the news posting makes no mention of any game details, fans are already predicting that the big news is a Call of Duty 4 announcement. Infinity Ward has yet to develop a game outside of the Call of Duty series, and Call of Duty 4 getting made eventually is almost a no-brainer.

In case it wasn't clearly known, the Call of Duty franchise has become a big money-maker for Activision. The first-person shooter World War II games have done extremely well in retail, and have even stuffed Activision execs' pockets after release thanks to downloadable content.

Thanks to alternating development duties between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, a new Call of Duty game can be pumped out each year, with the former doing 2007 duty.

Multiple fans even claim that Treyarch is already looking for Call of Duty 5 level designers on its Web site, but the company's online postings no longer mention a game name (though "COD" is listed in the job name). They do, however, mention "an industry leading first person action war franchise" and ask that applicants "preferably be a fan of World War 2 shooters."

While all signs point towards a Call of Duty 4 announcement being not bogus, the real question is where--and when--the game would take place. More than a year ago, rumors surfaced about Call of Duty abandoning its WWII setting and moving towards modern day warfare, a la Battlefield 2. Last November, the same rumor resurfaced from a different source and pegged Infinity Ward as the game's developer.

Bogus or not bogus?: It's looking not bogus that a new Call of Duty is going to be unveiled on April 28. However, WWII shooter fans shouldn't load their Panzerschrecks just yet, as the game (if it is announced) could be set in modern times.

Firstly if activision and infinity ard or who ever it is ae so rich because of previous call of duty releases why dont they spent a little to put out a pc version of call of duty 3 it came out for everthing elseand Secondly if its modern like iraq it would lose the epic cinema effect of charging up at enemy bunkers with about thirty other men and seeing ohers doing the same in the distance if its to modern it would lose the epic feel and be a bit of a let down

Everyone keeps saying WWII has been played out on COD and go to another war or modern day, ..........have we forgotten the Pacific Theater? I only saw a couple posts mentioning it. To date no one has made a good WWII Pacific Theatre FPS. Rising Sun was not that good. I think that theatre has a lot of potential.

I have to say this could make or break Activison as one of the best FPS makers in the gameing Industry. If they go the propaganda route and make the US weapons kick everything elses ass then it will suck. But if they go the realistic route and make it so it's an even playing feild like it is in real life then it could be the best Modern FPS ever made. IE enemy useing real up to date equipment and useing real battle tactics not just runing out in front of you to get shot. Enemies that can kill you with ease if your not smart and don't watch your back. Like COD3 was. It realy showed us for the first time that the Germans were just as nasty as we where in combat. Anyone remeber the mini games where your fighting hand to hand? thats how bad war is. Kill or be killed. Not like in hollywood where there is all kinds of honor crap, and this is your duty junk. In real war it's about the man next to you. Once the bullets start flying politics and all that gose right out the window. To qoute a great movie that is................... COD3 showed us how scary it is to be in combat, and that any second could be your last. Remeber the cutsceens where the guys are panicing? Thats what war can do to you. I hope we see more cutsceens in the PC version like what we saw in COD3. Good story and charictors that you get attached too, and wan't to live through too the next mission.

Call of Duty don't leave World War Two just yet! Sure there are alot of them out and still coming out but World War Two is like the best kind of theme for FPS's.

I got to agree with some of you that COD4 will be ruin becuase most of us are use to playing COD since if first came out which is about WW2. But if they're going to do it like that. Go by the timeline. Like start from WW2 move to Vietnam War then move to korean War, then to desert storm, then now.

I know its me again, but I forgot to mention I also own an PS3 and have COD3 for the PS3. I should mention too COD3 on the Sony is just as awesome there as it is on the xbox 360 with one major exception, the multi player, this is were the xbox 360 shines my friend it not glows but freak'en SHINES! So as part of my wish list for COD4 is this, they make it just as amazing in the multi player end of things for the PS3 as they did / do for the xbox 360 and I may, just may give up my xbox 360, but Sony, I am afraid has a lot more to do before that day comes for me. Again though for COD4, if they could do the same for the PS3 as what they do / did for the xbox 360 THAT would be awesome!

Awesome! Just one thing though; I wanna see more things blow up! I want to fly something too and blow that out of the sky, I want it all! But whatever they decide to do with COD4 will be OKAY by me as well, just bring it ON! I hope this next installment of COD4 makes my xbox 360 beg for mercy, and draws out every inch of capabilities out of it! Like I said . . . bring it on man, bring it ON!

Here's additional hoping that the new COD is set in modern times. Why are developers so afraid of the "War on Terror" or Korea or Vietnam? War's war: it sucks no matter what time period you're in, but it's fun to simulate with a controller/wii-mote.

COD needs to move on from WWII. I don't care if its to the Korean war, Vietnam, modern, future...just do something else. The quality of the game suggests that a more modern setting would be great, and I am growing tired of seeing the same setting for war based FPS's. How many times do I have to "Storm the Beaches at Normandy!!!" for cripes sake?

That is so sad that COD3 never came out on pc. It would spoil the franchise if COD4 is set in modern times. In this one (if there is one) The last mission should be to anhilate Hitler.....HAHAHA NOW THAT WOULD BE FUN!!!!

Modern settings could ruin the game completely, but it could also be very cool. As said somewhere before, modern warfare is much slower and more boring... so

Anyway i love cod, as long as it's being released for PC!!!

CODfreak, I agree with you, CODUO was awesome. The only server I play on COD2 is this one that has a mod to make it similar to UO, as Unmodded COD2 MP sucks, Especially the new health system

  • btdwn

    Posted Apr 25, 2007 12:48 am PT

Modern Setting sound like it could be interesting for Single Player, But in terms of MP, I reckon WWII is the funner option. Whatever, as long as it comes out on PC I'll probably end up getting it

COD 1 and UO were my two single favorite shooters ever, and i still play them today. They had a feel that has never been replicated by any of the shallow excuses for sequels. It seemed like after UO that every sequel was only a mass produced, adrenaline trip. When i played finest hour, and big red one, i felt like i was playing MOH: frontline, they felt empty and rough. COD2 was ok, but the multiplayer sucked, and COD 3 i have yet to play but it looks like a carbon copy of 2. are there any true PC COD fans that feel me?

No, not COD4, they can't announce COD4 yet. They haven't announced COD3 yet... you know what I'm talking about.

The special edition PC version with updated graphics, extra campaigns, more online modes, etc, etc.

Call of Duty has always, and will always be released on the PC platform. It's time for Activision to ammend their mistake of not releasing it for the platform sooner.

Well if the setting will be modern times I wonder what it will be? COD4: Ruwandan Genocide? Desert Storm? Any true to life conflict will pale in comparison to the scope and legitamacy of World War II. I'd rather see a WW 1, Civil War, or American Revolution game.
