What we heard: Upon first glance, the very suggestion that Sony would release the PS4 in the next year and a half is absurd. The company invested heavily into the research and development of the PlayStation 3, and there's functionally no way it could make its money back and justify that expense after only a couple of years on the market.

Sony has also been vocal about wanting to extend the life span of its consoles to a decade, something that isn't likely to happen if the PS3 only has two years as the company's premiere offering. And then there would be the resulting looting, riots, and pillaging (hyperbole used for effect) from Sony fans who shelled out $600 for the latest and greatest on layaway, only to have it become old news by the time it was paid off.

However, if one were to keep reading the article, one might suspect that it is not in fact about the PlayStation 4, but about something more akin to the Xbox 360 Elite.

"The device will include the same chipset as the current PS3 but where it will differ from the current model is in the drive bay and in the attachment area," the article reads. "It will also include an extensive software suite for the managing of content being streamed to a TV or Hi-Fi source. In addition, Sony is working on improving the output experience so that the device can become a true home entertainment centre eliminating the need for a media centre."

Unless Sony's marketers have gone nuts, they aren't likely to label a machine with the same chipset and a small array of new features as the PS4. This sounds more like a simple redesign and a firmware upgrade, the sort of changes that could reduce costs for Sony but not even justify a different name or casing for the system. Even if it does wind up being a new PlayStation product, expect something along the lines of the PSX, the combination PlayStation 2-digital video recorder released exclusively in Japan in 2003.

    i got all next gen consoles and hate me if u want they all got there ups and down and yes i got a psp and ds w8ing 4 a ps4 but i would love to w8 longer that a year i doubt that it will show up next year it's goona be just like home previewed then wont come out ever

    Ok, i have 2 friends that work for sony, and they tell me that they will come out with a PS4, but it wont come out till around 10yrs after PS3 had come out. If you look at release dates for ps1 and ps2 they should be about 10yrs apart. so you guys got about 9yrs to get ready for the PS4 and get your hands on a PS3. Also the reason they do 10yrs is so they can milk out the PS3 as much as they can and then release the next so that they can sell a bunch.

    I was like WHOA!!! PS4 already? Nah. Based on previous PS consoles history, they will last for a while before a new console comes out. There's no way Sony is gonna release a PS4 so soon. The the slim PS3 model hasn't even come out yet. This was stupid.

    damn, that would be funny... i haven't even gotten my hands on a PS3 controller and their already planning on making a next console without even a year of the ps3's release..? what's the matter with sony? this completely untrue... that would be the biggest upset of everyone who has their hands on a ps3 right now this second... becuz they would want the ps4 that they would say would be better than the ps3... lol

    Even if the PS3 is failing this is a stupid ideal.
    This thing is worth $600! And its gonna be old already?! Completely Absurd! PS3 may be behind but it still has a Chance! And if they develope a new console so soon then Microsoft and Nintendo would have beter Technology and they would have to make a PS5!

    rumors like this have only one purpose. To scare away buyers from the PS3. G4 talks about a price drop then in the article says its not true. but the Headline is all some people really see. Many don't read the full article.

    nintendocream u should ask yourself why IGN, 1UP Gamepro and most of the gaming websites have taken that for news too. Are they all Xbox360 fanboy sites? At least GameSpot made sure to put a question mark in the title and post it under rumor control also.

    As a Nintendo Fanboy I like to talk about how bad the PS3 is selling and how the Wii is so much better, but I have no doubt the PS3 will get better eventually.

    The PS3 will probably continue its trend and have a bad first year. But check out the 360 today compared to last year. Let's just say it improved a lot! I bet you the PS3 will do the same.

    But, as a Nintendo Fanboy, I think the Wii will sell at least as good if not better than the PS3.

    Its early to start rumors of this kind, Sony would not release a PS4 for about four or five years, they probably would release upgrade equipment instead like a computer. Peace

    In all likelihood, the "PS4" being described will be a slim/upgraded PS3, which will hopefully lead to a price drop (I will NOT pay more than $250 for a PS3). PS4? Please. If I'm playing a PS4 in 2008, it'll be on Mars with Homer Simpson and Dave Chappelle doing stand-up in the background.

    So, basically, we are [possibly] getting a PS3.5!?

    Makes sense, i guess, especially if they feel the need to incorporate new technology or generally feel that they need to update the console - to prolong it's life to 10 years.

    If the update is [possibly] in 18 months time though, surely there will be more things that could be included into it's line up, even more so than a few added extras?

    After reading this rumor most likely it would happen. The need to recover the money or the Sony will suffer the same fate as Genesis. Now Regarding the PS4 I wouldn't call that I would say the PS3 Elite. Now that the blueray value will drop by the beggining of next year then they wanna take advantage to redo the contract and regain the profit the they lost when the PS3 came out. We you think of it it would be the best idea they got.
